Warning: this is an angry rant about some of the reviews I’ve seen for Supergirl
Caveats: this was not a perfect movie and definitely had some plot pacing issues, but most of the negative reviews I’ve seen are HEAVILY rooted in misogyny and I need to rant about it
Here are three points I’ve seen in misogynistic reviews:
Point 1: “Kara is unlikeable a lot of the time.” Okay and? She’s traumatized and obviously has unhealthy coping mechanisms and her realizing that is a central point of the movie. I don’t remember people complaining about Tony Stark when he did the exact same thing of substance abuse and being an asshole. It feels like male superheroes like Tony Stark are allowed to be flawed and rude but women never are. I remember similar complaints about Captain Marvel when it came out… not for any of the legit plot pacing issues either but because she was “mean to men”
Point 2: “the villain is lame/not memorable/not villainous enough” Sure, the main guy Krem is cringe in his evil laugh bs but the concept of the Brigands itself is terrifying…. They’re a group of people who forcibly steal girls for breeding purposes… they’re a group of children rapists and they’re not villainous enough for you?!? Like way to expose yourself there buddy. I was grateful the movie didn’t go explicit in the sexual violence but the underlying implication was always there. People who didn’t think this villain was “bad enough” obviously don’t care about violence against women and girls.
Point 3: “lobo was the best part of the movie/the only reason to see the movie” yes Jason Mamoa was great as Lobo but he was in it for all of 10-15 minutes and was a comic relief character…. He did not “save” or “carry” the movie. The movie didn’t need saving, and Kara and Ruthye carried it on their own. If the only semi-prominent male character besides the antagonist was what you considered the best part of the movie…. There’s a chance you hate women. He honestly felt like a Deadpool character to me… like fine as a background character for a few laughs but by no means necessary to the movie. Tbh you could have removed him from the plot and next to nothing would have changed…
I think it’s a shame this movie is getting so much hate. I don’t think it was as good as Superman but that has nothing to do with supergirl herself, but rather the writing and some of the repetitive plot points. BUT the main reason I see people hating on this movie feels so deeply misogynistic for the reasons I listed above. It’s a solid B movie, please see it in theaters if you can to support women led superhero movies. Rant over thanks for reading

Haven't seen people really talk about it but I feel awful for Thaddeus. He's built up to be the comic relief character but when you think about it what he's undergoing is terrifying and no one is giving him answers.
He turns to Ghoul and tries to ask him questions but he just gets brushed off. His arm is falling off and he looks to Ghoul and says "this happens to folks like us all the time right?".
And yeah it's funny and it's comedic but when you sit with it long enough you think about how tragic Thaddeus' fate is, especially if he's becoming a centaur (or any other awful mutation), and he's fully expecting to become a Ghoul.
My guess is they're making his transnformation seem more comedic so the final result would be heartbreaking- but even if they're not, the background is tragic nonetheless.
I love you Thaddeus Fallout, I hope you'll make it out 🙏
This comment hit me right in the feels 🥲🥲

Also to be clear if you put the new Harry Potter show on my dashboard I will be unfollowing and probably blocking you. JK Rowling is responsible for the death and pain of too many trans people to count in my country and I cannot tolerate her new way of trying to gain cultural and financial power in any way shape or form.
I don't even want to see critiques of it. I don't want to see hatewatch reviews about how bad or dumb or racist or transphobic parts of it are like people did for the fantastic beasts movies of the hogwarts video game. You are part of the problem. Do not feed the machine. Let it die. You do not need to consume media you don't like just to show off to everyone else how much you don't like it. It's especially heinous if you say something like "I'm donating the cost of a movie ticket or a month's streaming subscription to a trans charity," because that doesn't balance the scales, it doesn't negate the evil, it just shows you are willing to support both sides, making you a spineless coward.
Just fucking ignore it and understand that it's going to be recationary on purpose. It's going to be full of bait. Warner Bros is counting on there being a ton of controversy to boost the numbers because there's no such thing as bad publicity.
DO NOT ENGAGE. Let it come and go, and maybe the numbers will be bad enough that it gets canceled before it gets to book 7. Probably not, though. This is a tentpole for WB, they're putting all their eggs in this basket, it's not gonna bomb like Morbius. They're gonna push it through to the end no matter what, so just do your part by not playing along.
don’t even pirate it. let it die in obscurity.

guys. do you get the significance of what just happened? do you get it ????
stranger things is arguably netflix’s biggest hit Ever. it is a show with millions and millions of viewers worldwide. it’s basically the definition of mainstream media right now.
and will, a canonically gay character, has been repeatedly pushed aside by some viewers as “irrelevant” or just as someone who is “getting in the way” of the “meant-to-be heterosexual” couple.
but now, at the end of st5 volume one, the entire spotlight is on will. not only that—it’s on will accepting himself for who he is. it’s on him accepting he’s gay, accepting he’s in love with his lifelong best friend, and, most of all, accepting that it’s okay to be exactly who he is. and that is what empowers him.
this is so, so important because it’s way too uncommon for something like this to happen, with a confirmed lgbtq+ character, and especially on a show as big as this.
made a lil thing
this won’t end well.
