MHA Thoughts on Ending

I finally figured out what made me iffy on the ending of My Hero Academia.

Spoilers for the end of the series--you have been warned.

I didn't know how to feel about the ending for a long time, but I think I finally figured it out. It's the power suit that I do not like.

To me, a big message of the story is that the world of My Hero has a "Hero" profession with associated fame, glory, etc. There's sponsorship stuff and whatever. It's a business. There are literally Heroes that will opt to peace out of a mission because it's not enough "points" or glory or whatever. Or it's not their style.

In my opinion, there's a message there--Heroism became too commercial.

Izuku was the last person anyone expected to be able to do anything to save anyone. Quirkless, bullied, and an Otaku that knows a lot of facts and trivia…but doesn't know how to put it into action. Like…imagine if he was able to call out plays due to his knowledge of the pro-Heroes around during the Sludge-Villain incident. "Kamui Woods--if you could use x-move…and if Mt. Lady is willing to get her hands dirty to try and pull Sludge off--enough to allow Kacchan to breathe" etc. It could have been useful.

But that's not the point. Izuku wants to be a Hero, sure…but it's always been about saving people for Izuku--not the fame, not the TV time, not #1 on the Hero charts. It's just saving people.

In my opinion, the ending should have been Quirkless Izuku in his regular, civilian clothes rushing in to save someone and calling out plays for the Heroes on-scene in an incident that mirrors Sludge on his way to teaching at UA. It'd be the series coming full circle and hammering home what's at the heart of the story: Being a Hero isn't about having a cool quirk or having cool gadgets. The power suit shouldn't have been a thing. Izuku is still a hero without the suit simply because he's willing to take action when someone needs saving.

He's not a Hero because of the quirk or the suit. He's a hero because he jumps into action when everyone else freezes. Had it been a crying kid, like Tomura, wandering the streets looking for mom or being orphaned, and then Izuku pats them on the head and says something like "Don't cry. I am here." And he stays with the kid and it's implied he'll take care of the kid (e.g. bringing them to the proper authorities to get help etc.), that could be enough. He's a Hero and he saved someone from becoming the next Tomura.

It's not your quirk or your expensive support items that make you a Hero. It's not going through the licensing exam that makes you a Hero. It's not Hero Rankings that make you a Hero. Anyone/everyone can be a Hero because being a Hero at it's core is literally the willingness to act when someone is in trouble. And I think the power suit gets in the way of that message. Izuku was always a Hero. Suit or no suit--he'll jump into action to give someone directions, offer reassurance or encouragement, or literally jump into danger to do what he can to save someone that's drowning or whatever. Suit or no suit--but it's more meaningful without the power suit. And, like…anyone can be a Hero and we saw Izuku teach that to the masses when the refugees saw Izuku go down and the skeptical one literally offered the shirt off his back and Izuku wore it. In that moment, the refugees were "heroes" in the sense that they acted to help someone in trouble. Message: Anyone can be a hero--you just have to act.

You are not safe from this. You, the person reading this, are not safe from this. No matter how educated or open minded you think you are, you are not safe from this. The moment you think you are safe from it is the moment you become the most susceptible.

Its similar to why you cannot put bad people in a class of their own. The moment you do that you stop being able to see the bad things that the people closest to you do a la "my best friend couldn't have said that racist thing, they're not evil."

The moment you think you are immune from this type of backslide into right wing nonsense is the moment you stop questioning yourself enough to keep yourself from backsliding into right wing nonsense a la "I mean im not antiscience, im vaccinated, I just think that fluoride in our water supply is imparting children's ability to learn as fast as they otherwise could without it."

Remember, being progressive means progressing, its about always moving forward. The moment you rest on your laurels and stop putting in effort to keep the progression is the moment you start becoming left behind.

Because we are seeing that right now with the world situation and the fight against the Orange Fucker and Muskrat. All kinds of people gumming up the works, including people within the government itself, saying “no, I’m not doing that.” and many of them will be fired or removed. But people are digging in their heels for the small moment of mercy it will grant us.

It's not about changing the world. Standing up for what you believe is right isn't about your own survival or about whether or not your side 'wins'. It's knowing that you stood by what you agree with.

"I do not agree with your policies. I will not be the one to push the button. Yeah, it's likely to get pushed with or without me here--but I refuse to be the one to push that button."

Hypothetically, if Cameron Klein died then and there and the button was pushed, then what? What was the point? The point was that he dies standing up for what he believes in. Those that continue on can use him as a martyr for the cause. And if Klein's consciousness exists in an afterlife somewhere, then maybe it's at peace knowing that he didn't compromise on his ideals. "Yes, I'm dead. But I died staring down something I could not condone and telling it 'over my dead body--fuck off'." If he caves, maybe he dies of old-age…then what? He dies with regrets. He dies knowing that he pushed the buttons that allowed something he doesn't agree with to go through.

"My vote doesn't matter", "The party/person I vote for never wins", "Nobody else is befriending the new kid, so I won't either"--screw what everyone else is doing and start thinking about what it is that *you* want to be doing. Do that. It matters. It's not about organizing a movement. Forget that and just make your move.

Inspiring the crowd to make better decisions isn't some monumental thing. Heck, often times it's not an organized action. Sometimes all it takes for a "crowd" to make changes is for every individual in that crowd to make a choice quietly/privately and carry it out, regardless of whether or not anyone else is doing it too. Do your part--focus on what you can do and do what you can live with even if you think that you are the only one doing it.

Love your blog! I've always been a Re:Vale fan (and still am) and didn't have eyes or ears for the other groups…but your characterizations have made me start liking Trigger too. This may be a bit of a controversial request so I won't feel bad if you pass on it. Could I have the Trigger boys reacting to their s/o's tummy growling in front of them? This is not coming from an ED mindset--I've been extremely busy/stressed (working 6+ day weeks, juggling 3 part-time jobs, and having random SNAFU stuff come up with family that results in more responsibilities/duties etc.) and so meals/eating has kind of fallen by the wayside for me. Still eat…but maybe only managing to eat breakfast in a single day or something. Made me crave being taken care of/fussed over by the Trigger boys. Thank you!

Carrying another flowerpot, you heave a sigh the moment you place it on the shelf.

With the back of your hand, you wipe the sweat from your brow. Your arms are slightly shaking, having spent a good part of the morning moving boxes and arranging the shelves of the flower shop you work at part time.

With a sideways glance at the ticking clock, you realize it’s almost lunchtime.

Though it was never really lunchtime for you, as you usually spent the hour you had going over several papers that needed to be sorted for your office job.

Switching the door’s sign to ‘closed’, you pull a chair next to the counter, as a flurry of documents begins to cover the entirety of the wooden surface.

Then, a chiming sound makes you momentarily lose your focus.

“Sorry, we’re closed.” You announce, not even bothering to raise your gaze from the work at hand.

You hear the door closing with a dull ‘thud’, footsteps approaching.

“I said,” You brace your hands on the table, standing up from your seat. “That we are clo-“

Steel hued eyes meet yours in the middle of your sentence.

“Gaku!” You smile up at him. He doesn’t miss the dark circles under your eyes. “What are you doing here?”

One of his hands cups your cheek, the pads of his fingers smoothing over the tiredness of your skin, as if just like that, he could erase the clouds of sleepless nights from your stare.

“Inviting you to have lunch with me, of course.” He utters, in the blossom scented space that separates you.

You lower your head, hair falling in front of your eyes.

“Dear… I would love that but… I don’t have the time. I’m sorry…” You trail off, thinking of the meager energy drink you’ve had time to buy on your way here this morning.

As if to announce that it is time already for you to have a proper meal, your stomach growls.

Heat rises to your cheeks. This is so embarrassing! For your gut to make that kind of noise in front of your hot boyfriend.

“You didn’t hear that…” You mumble, looking everywhere except at him.

A chuckle causes you to look at him wide eyed.

“Gaku, please, don’t make fun of me…” You whine, holding onto his arm.

Those crystalline eyes of his soften, his hand finding yours.

“I’m not making fun of you, but you need to eat. So I’m taking you to the soba shop, yeah? I’ll drive you back to your other job afterwards.”

“But I… You have work too… I just can’t waste your time like this… driving me afterwards…”

“[Y/n], look at me.” Your boyfriend’s tone is serious, yet still warm.

When your gaze meets his, his expression is solemn.

“You never waste my time. Never.”

You sigh, a tired smile making it to your lips. It warms your heart, really that your partner is so sweet.

“Alright.” You utter, gathering your stuff. “And Gaku?”

“Yes, love?”

“Thank you.” You tell him, as you nuzzle against his side.

“Nothing to thank me for.” He whispers, with a kiss to the crown of your head.

The midday sun outlines your intertwined hands against the concrete as you make your way to his car.

You promise to make time for him soon.

— Tenn is very perceptive, so, honestly, it will be hard for you to neglect yourself before he notices and “forces” you to take care.

— He sees how you barely have any energy left whenever you two happen to have the same day off.

— How you’re so flooded with projects for work you barely tell him about your day anymore, dismissing the topic with a ‘busy, as usual.’

— And well, he knows what you’re doing. How, in order to provide for others, to make enough money and keep your superiors at work pleased, you’re running yourself ragged.

— How does he know? Well, because he pretty much does the exact same thing; just giving, to his fans, to his family, to everyone, even at the cost of his own happiness or health.

— But with you, he wants you to put yourself first. You’re so dear to him, Tenn can’t bear the thought of seeing your light dim like this.

— And he will not hesitate to confront you about it.

The shuffling of steps causes for Tenn to look up from his book.

Usually, his face lit up whenever he saw you, but today, the image of you breaks his heart a little.

You look sickly. Your hair is a mess, your clothes are all rumpled, and nasty looking shadows seem to have been permanently etched under the bright eyes he loves to look into.

Tenn swallows; he has to do something about it, your condition is just going to worsen if you keep this up.

“[Y/n]…” Your boyfriend calls you as you rummage through the kitchen cupboards.

“Tenn, do we have any energy bars left?” You ask, still searching.

He sighs. It’s your day off today. And you’re not even going to have a proper meal?

“[Y/n].” He repeats, his tone a tad colder.

“Where did I put them…” You muse to yourself.

Well, you’re bent on not paying attention to him, so he’ll have to snap you out of this vicious cycle.

Your lover’s hand wraps around your wrist, firm but gentle. He spins you around, making you face him.

You let out a gasp, taken aback by his bold action right now.

“[Y/n], listen to me.” Tenn commands, still not letting go of you.

“Tenn, I’m sorry, but I don’t have time now-“

He pulls you closer to him.

“You will listen.”

He can feel your shallow breathing now, his silken strands of starlight on snow brushing the side of your cheek, his comforting and sweet scent surrounding you.

Oh, how you wish you could just bask in his warmth, curled up with a mug of hot chocolate and a plate of the donuts he so adores as you two read on the couch.

But sadly, your situation doesn’t exactly leave you the time for such hedonistic actions.

“Tenn…” You breathe, wide eyed.

“Why do you keep doing this to yourself?” He lets out, voice breaking a little, barely above a whisper.

“Doing what?”

“You’re not hydrating properly, your lips are all chapped; you’re not sleeping enough, and when was the last time you had a real meal?” Your boyfriend questions, his thumb running soothing patterns over your wrist.

As if in response, your tummy decides to rumble right then and there.

You slump your shoulders, burying your face in his chest. The softness of his sweater is welcoming, akin to a comfort blanket that’s been with you since childhood.

“Nothing gets past you, does it?” You laugh, humorlessly, closing your eyes to all the burdens you’ve been shouldering alone.

Your shoulders start to shake. Tenn’s arms wrap around your form, so frail now, as if a simple gust of wind could shatter what remains of your sanity.

“Not when it comes to you, my love.” Your boyfriend answers, his voice a sweet melancholy symphony. “Now, why don’t I run a hot bath for you and make us something to eat?” He suggests, his fingers lacing with yours. “It’s our day off, so, please, rest.” He murmurs, honeyed lips leaving the softest kiss ever known to your cheek.

“I’d like that.” You reply, squeezing Tenn’s hands a little tighter. “I’d really love that.”

Your boyfriend gives you a tender smile, bringing you close to him again, wrapping you in the sweetness of his delicate hug.

“I’d love that too, my [Y/n].”

You look up at him. Then:

“I love you, Tenn-Tenn.”

Shades of vibrant pink flower across his cheeks at your use of the cute nickname, eyes of rosé dreams softening even more when he regards you.

“I love you too. More than you’ll ever know.”

Protected in Tenn’s embrace, you feel the exhaustion and hunger of the last few weeks seeping away.

Your Tenn really is an angel, you think, as you bathe in his comforting light for a few more instants.

— Sweet Ryu, who just wants to see you always smiling.

— He’s been feeling this ache lately; the time you two share together has been diminishing; your smiles have become more rare; you’re not there when he wakes up or when he goes to bed.

— And in moments when you two are actually together, you barely talk, just cuddling up into him, your face buried in his chest.

— Don’t get him wrong, he loves holding you close, he really does, but there’s something in your smile that feels… off.

— As if you were a candle, out in a windy night, threatening to topple over and either extinguish or go up in flames.

— Ryu’s worried… Have you been eating properly lately? He knows you work at different places and don’t really have the time to sit down and have nutritious meals nor to prepare them.

The sound of the front door opening and closing announces your return.

Outside, it’s pitch dark night, mid-autumn wind blowing with force, the trees lining the street inevitably bending to its imposing tune.

You carelessly throw your bag to the floor as you remove your shoes, too exhausted to even sort out the files inside. That’s a future you problem, for now.

Releasing a breath, you pull back your shoulders, an attempt at releasing some of the accumulated tension.

“Long day?” A voice you loved, no matter if it was whispering sweet nothings or singing on bright stages, asks.

Your lips curl up in a soft smile, following the sound of his voice to the kitchen.

“You could say that.” You sigh, slumping on one of the chairs.

Your boyfriend turns around, switching off the fire momentarily.

It’s cute, you think, the sight of him donning an apron, cooking so peacefully and joyfully… If you weren’t so tired you’d love nothing more than to help him with it… But truth be told, lately you don’t even have time to pack your own lunch boxes.

“You know,” Ryu takes a seat next to you, his hand on yours over the table. “If there’s ever anything troubling you, I’m here to help you through it. No matter what it is, we’ll face it together.”

His eyes of melted sunlight stare at you with determination; so inviting, a blank book beckoning you to write in a language only you two speak all of your worries.

“Well it’s just…” You begin. “Lately, I’m… I feel…like work is taking up so much from me… I barely have time to spend with you or to eat…”

As if to prove your point, your belly chooses that exact moment to grumble.

“Damn it, that’s embarrassing.” You curse through gritted teeth.

Ryunosuke offers you one of his serene smiles.

“Dinner will be ready in a minute, my dear.”

He stands up, lips brushing against your forehead in a kiss that’s loving and reassuring.

“Just relax and let me take care of you tonight.” He softly tells you as he parts.

You’re glad you have the day off tomorrow. You’re so making up for lost time with him.

Hi ma'am. It was said that Shusei and Hotsuma tried to have children to increase Zweilt population in their former life but "no such children were born". Does this mean they weren't able to conceive or just the children born weren't of Zweilt nature? Maybe its irrelevant but its kind of sad if they weren't able to conceive at all :(

Sorry it took me a bit to reply. I have a loooot going on. I always assumed it meant they couldn’t conceive since Zweilt x Zweilt would have a pretty good chance for having a Zweilt. I could get technical and talk about how the phrase “no such” implies that rather than no children, there were “no such” (aka Zweilt) children. I think that’d be looking too far into it since that’s a translation thing since thing do slightly vary by translation. Example, German translation says Reiga plays Dragon Quest, English says Zelda, and Japanese says off brand zelda

For fanfic purposes, I've thought long and hard about this point...so I guess I'll throw in my 2 cents here. Spoilers for the whole manga-series here. You have been warned. Also, miscarriage is mentioned in this post so if that's something upsetting to you, please be warned that it comes up in this post.

What we know: -the Zweilt have short lifespans and it seems like they don't live beyond their twenties.

-female Zweilt were forced to get pregnant on-purpose in an attempt to "keep the blood strong".

-the Zweilt are known to have bad luck when it comes to love, relationships, and happiness.

-Touko and Tsukumo have always been siblings in previous lives too.

-Hotsuma and Shuusei were married in at least one previous life and Shuusei was a woman. Hotsuma was a man in a previous life (not necessarily the previous one or one where Shuusei was a woman) and his name was Izuna (forget the exact spelling, it's been a while).

-It takes more than just bloodline to make a Zweilt. Tachibana explains that it takes some innate talent or skill or whatever when Yuki first meets Senshiro.

-Tsubaki is under the impression that the final part of becoming a new Zweilt is for one to be accepted by their partner. If the partner does not have enough sentiment for you, then the ring does not fit and will not manifest any power.

-Duras can be summoned to the Human realm without Reiga being active. Humans find and use Grimoires and cause all kinds of trouble. The mission of the clan is to battle the Duras and take on the beasts of Infernus or whatever--the duty of the Zweilt is to reincarnate to fight against Reiga whenever he resurfaces.

-Zweilt go off to train with a master around age 7.

-Kuroto is not shown to use Izanagi (his sword) or his "Feet of God" power during the tragedy with Grandpa Garan.

What can be implied based on the conversations shown about the above:

-the Zweilt were forced to have children on-purpose in an attempt to breed more Zweilt. It's implied that no Zweilt were actually created as a direct result of this breeding (i.e. any child(ren) that may have been born with at least one Zweilt parent did not manage to become a Zweilt). I think conception between two Zweilt or with Zweilt has to be possible because why else try and impose this custom for centuries if it wasn't proven to be possible?

-Touko and Tsukumo are mentioned to be siblings in every lifetime. In this conversation, Touko and Shuusei are talking about marriage, marriage candidates and "approved matches" as well as doing away with the traumatizing convention of forcing the Zweilt to breed with acceptable partners. They talk about the bad luck with relationships and happiness in this same conversation. To me, this implies that the Zweilt don't get to marry the person they love the most/want to be with the most for whatever reason. Touko and Tsukumo clearly love each other...and they are always siblings...so it can be implied that Tsukumo and Touko would have chosen to marry each other had they not been siblings.

-Hotsuma and Shuusei were married in at least one previous life and Shuusei was a woman. It's possible that this was a rare scenario where the Zweilt got to marry the person they wanted to (if we believe that the two love each other the most 'cuz that's a common trend between Zweilt partners)...but I guess this is where the "no children of that sort were ever born" comes into play. My headcanon is that the pressure to bear children, the short lifespans, and Shuusei's reincarnation as a male in this life are connected. This is 100% headcanon for me...but I think Shuusei and Hotsuma got married in a past life and tried to have children. I think Shuusei went through something traumatic or many traumatic things that were only possible because she was a girl in that life. Maybe she miscarried at least one child. Maybe she and Hotsuma managed to conceive--but the Hotsuma of that time died early and left a pregnant Shuusei all alone. Maybe that Shuusei survived long enough to have the child, but she most likely did not live long enough to raise the child. Zweilt don't live into their thirties so even if female-Shuusei bore and had a child in her late teens, she wouldn't have lived long enough to see the child become an adult. I think Shuusei went through something traumatic enough because she was a woman that she wished to be reborn male in this life. Losing your partner and being left alone with a child could do it. Going through lost pregnancies would definitely be traumatic. Dying during childbirth or still pregnant or feeling the child being killed within you--all definitely traumatic and could be terrible things that happened to Shuusei in a past life. We know the Duras can be active even when Reiga goes under...whose to say a pregnant Shuusei didn't encounter a Duras that decided to torture her and maybe kill her unborn child within her? Yeah...I know it's gruesome but I've written a few fanfic with these plots that I have never polished enough to post anywhere. We know the Zweilt have bad luck and often face tragedy in their lives...so taking that to extremes gave me these plot-bunnies.

-The Zweilt blood is diluting. The original Zweilt (the ones there during the Sunset of the Underworld) were alive and away with Takashiro during the Sunset of the Underworld. They have vague memories of that time--proven by Touko trying to remember if Takashiro and Yomi had a thing when she's trying to encourage Ibuki to go ahead with her perceived crush on Takashiro. Most of the original Zweilt have "God" powers. "Eye of God" (Shuusei, Sairi), "Ear of God" (Tsukumo, and Touko to a lesser extent?), "God's Voice" (Hotsuma), "Feet of God/The Swift One" (Kuroto), "The Light of God" (Yuki). The newer Zweilt aren't mentioned to have such powers. Senshiro joined in this lifetime and he isn't revealed to have a "God" power. 

-Kuroto isn't shown to use any of his Zweilt powers during the tragedy that befell the dojo. I've taken this to mean that he didn't have access to his full power as a Zweilt at the time. His home was under attack and the people he thought of as precious to him were facing certain death and Kuroto was beyond livid that it was Cadenza, of all things, to cause all of this. This seems like a situation where a fully-powered Zweilt would be throwing around all of their abilities to get a piece of the threat. Kuroto knew the stakes and knew Garan would die facing off against Cadenza. He begged...but...why beg? If he had access to "The Feet of God" why not use it to get passed Senshiro's hold, through the door before Garan put a seal on it, and face Cadenza with Izanagi in-hand? Kuroto was in his teens in this scene and Zweilt have short lifespans. To me, this says that even if a Zweilt candidate had been born to a Zweilt in the past...it's possible they all died/were killed before they became a full-powered Zweilt. They have to survive until they are 7 to train with a master...and they're well into their teens before they're ready to face off against an Opast--the Zweilt parent definitely wouldn't have lived long enough to see their child become a full-powered Zweilt. They lived in dangerous times and anyone with any skill to fight Duras likely was sent off on missions to fight and bind Duras and recover grimoires. If the child of a Zweilt survived long enough to receive training, they likely went off on missions to retrieve grimoires and fight Duras. Dying during any of these missions would be possible.

Basically, I believe that "no children were born" doesn't necessarily mean that the Zweilt are infertile or anything. I think it's possible for the Zweilt to conceive...but 9 months for a full-term pregnancy is a long time and anything could happen. The previous lives of the Zweilts are all depicted in historical times where medicine and whatevers weren't fully established--so eras where dying in childbirth was a very real possibility. Dying while pregnant and having both mother and child die would have been a possibility. Miscarriages are also a possibility. Being attacked by Duras and/or still expected to go on missions while pregnant could have happened. Being experimented on and having the Giou dissect the carrier and the child would also be possible (lost faith in Giou as the good guys with what they actually did with Takashiro). Falling down the stairs, eating something toxic, succumbing to elements, accident, or injury would have been more common in past eras than in the modern times of the current lifetime. The Zweilt have short lifespans and I guess bearing a child also takes a toll on said lifespan to some extent...so dying early and/or not being there to raise the child is totally plausible. Untrained or unskilled/with no innate talent child may have been a thing. It's possible the Zweilt had children grow up to be "Zweilt Candidates" like Rou and Shizuka. It's possible that the children of a Zweilt became something like what the Shikibe sisters are--they aren't Zweilt, but they are still part of the clan.

Re:Vale thoughts after I7 S3 pt2 SPOILERS AHEAD!

Just finished Idolish7 S3, part 2...and I'm not over it. There are definitely Spoilers all the way up to the end of season 3, part 2. You’ve been warned.

Re:Vale has been my favorite since they were introduced (in the anime, haven't yet played or read up on the game). I couldn't put my finger on why. Sure, their character designs were nice-looking...but I didn't like them in a crushy fangirl way...I liked them for genuinely being kind senpai...and what Season 3 revealed about Momo breaks my heart.

I loved the way they pranked Idolish7 upon meeting them. I loved the fact that they ended up being the kind and friendly type of senpai. They had fame—they were at the top of the idol industry (and they managed it in a measly 5 years)--but they weren't conceited about it. They could have been the aloof, “I'm better than everyone” type of idol...Like Camus of Quartet Night (Uta no Prince-sama) or like Zool is trying to be. Unlike Zool, which I see as a Heel-type...Re:Vale had the clout to back up that attitude if they chose it. They chose to be genuinely friendly and to guide and protect their kohai so that everybody could have fun and be happy together. I see most of this as Momo's influence.

Yuki before Momo saw everyone as expendable. The core of his Re:Vale was himself and his music. He was a music-making savant. Yuki's talent in writing/composing their own songs is literally good enough to be recognized by Kujo multiple times. Kujo attempted to scout Yuki of Re:Vale but Yuki wanted to stand by Banri because Banri was his friend. But Re:Vale started as two friends trying to form a band together—a band, complete with a guitarist or two, bass, and a synthesizer or something. That was the original intention but Yuki's prickly personality and his view of how him and his music were the only non-expendable parts of the project made it so that a band never got off the ground...so...Banri made the decision to shift gears and to debut as an idol duo rather than as a band. I feel like Banri suggested this because the Yuki he knew at the time wasn't able to get along with anybody and what Banri wanted was to share Yuki's gift of music-making with the world. It took losing Banri and then Momo's influence for Yuki to realize that people are not expendable...that making songs alone didn't feel right. What good is a song if it isn't shared with other people? Yuki had the talent to create songs...but he couldn't share them with the world as a single act.

Re:Vale's story is heartbreaking for me because I see the current Re:Vale as something Momo created. Yuki was ready to give it all up until Momo struck a bargain with him: 5 years. Keep it going for 5 years and then do whatever you want. He never once considered that he'd get more than 5 years and it seems like he just assumed that after 5 years Re:Vale would end or drop him and that Yuki would go solo or something. There is no Re:Vale as it is now without Momo. Banri got them to the small stages but between Banri and Yuki, neither of them had connections or knew how to behave in order to invite sponsors and patrons or whatever. That was Momo's doing. In 5 years, Momo turned a high-school duo performing in small live-houses into the monarchs of the idol industry. They became kings because of Momo's influence—because of his socialization skills. Yuki could only see the music, Banri just wanted to share his talented friend's music with the world. Momo got them there. And despite all that, time and again we've been shown how Momo doesn't value himself at all.

Momo was so anxious over the 5 year bargain being up that he couldn't perform. The original Re:Vale saved his life and inspired him to break out of his funk over getting injured and being unable to play soccer professionally or whatever. I think what Momo wanted with the 5 year bargain was the fact that he couldn't accept that something so meaningful to him could end just like that. Re:Vale gave him a new will to live and he refused to see it end. What Momo didn't realize until their kohai performed a medley of Re:Vale's songs was that the Re:Vale he and Yuki created then went on to inspire many, many more idols. They weren't Zero...but they were well-loved. And...well...we're constantly told of Zero's legendary performances and how he's the pinnacle of Idol...but I don't feel like we've seen any of that. Zero is to this series what Gol D. Roger was to One Piece or what All Might was in the world of Boku no Hero Academia. He's the legend everybody talks about and the motivation for the main characters...but us as the readers aren't shown much of that. We're constantly told that Zero was a Legendary idol...but I have yet to see Zero perform a full song. We're told that Dis One was a Zero song...but we've only heard Re:Vale's version, Tenn's accapella version, and the opening riffs of the Fake-Zero's version. To me, Dis One is a Re:Vale song. Theirs was the first complete version I heard and even if a Zero version is released someday, I'm still going to compare it to Re:Vale. I loved Tenn's version too...but to me, Dis One is a Re:Vale song.

After all that, Momo's the one doing the most to try and protect the kohai from the darker side of the entertainment industry. Every time he meets with Tsukumo Ryo, I imagine someone throwing themselves over a pit of snakes to prevent anyone else from getting bitten. Despite Ryo being totally unhinged, Momo still tries to defend him to some extent. He's cautious and he knows what Tsukumo (the company) and what Tsukumo Ryo are capable of...but he still thinks appeasing Ryo is better than cutting him off and that comes back to bite him in a terrible way.

Momo even extends an olive branch to Zool despite knowing that they are Tsukumo's toys. At least three of the Zool members seem to be willing accomplicies doing what Tsukumo Ryo wants them to. Despite them acting in such a way, Momo doesn't hold it against them and even gives them his personal cell number if any of them ever needs to talk with them (to escape Tsukumo, I guess).

When the members of Re:Vale go out for a drink. Banri picks up on something: Momo never compliments himself and it seems like Momo still harbours some feelings of, “I'm not needed. Re:Vale should just be you two...I should go away”. Banri starts talking about how he's confident in his skills as a talent manager and admin at Takanashi Productions. He's proud of the fact that he knows how to manage Idolish7 and that he knows how his boss takes his coffee and that he's confident in his computer skills. He's proud of what he's accomplished as a behind-the-scenes member of Takanashi Productions. He then asks Momo to do the same, to brag about himself a little. Another heartbreaking moment because Momo freezes. Nothing comes to mind for him. Yuki frowns and fields this, bragging about all that Momo's accomplished in 5 years. This moment still brings tears to my eyes because it shows a few things: 1) Yuki has changed for the better—he's able to see the talents of other people now rather than writing people off as expendable. 2) Momo still doesn't see that there's no Re:Vale without him. Re:Vale as it is wouldn't exist without him and he still can't see that.

It comes back to bite him. After Friends Day, they are literally planning on killing Momo—right in front of him. He doesn't put up a fight because he doesn't want them switching targets. And when the thugs have him literally leaned over his balcony and are fumbling to uncuff him before throwing him from that height, Momo's thoughts aren't crying out to be saved. His last thought was literally “Ban-san, did I do a good job protecting Riku and Idolish7?” He's literally staring his death in the face and all he's thinking is whether or not he was a good boy that protected his kohai. This moment was totally heartbreaking.

When Yuki gets involved, Momo fights back...but only to try and give Yuki time to run away. He hits one thug, but turns his back on the other one in favor of begging Yuki to run away. He doesn't try to run away together with Yuki. He doesn't fight back more than necessary...one thug buys Yuki time...both thugs would show that Yuki has a will to live and that he's fighting to incapacitate the thugs with some intention of surviving the fight. This moment makes me terrified that maybe Momo's story is that he genuinely thinks so little of himself that not only does he not care about himself, but he's actively trying to sacrifice himself. There's no Re:Vale without Momo. Yuki isn't going to recover from it this time if Momo goes away. Momo isn't replaceable and his influence is why Re:Vale immediately became my favorite of the idol groups.

Momo's apartment only has two exits. You either leave through the door, or you take a flying leap off of the balcony toward almost certain death. Had Momo shoved both thugs far enough to give them time to run, they both could have gotten to the door before the thugs could have gotten up. It's an inward-swinging door—which means that it'd be slightly more difficult, but it'd be do-able for them to get to the other side of the door and then either jam the deadbolt or otherwise pull on the handle to keep the thugs trapped in the apartment while one or the other called the authorities (or they could have run for the stairs or something. When Yuki is threatening Zool, he mentions that with two enemies, it's tougher because odds are that the enemy is blocking all paths out of the situation. In Momo's apartment, the enemy was behind them. The both had a clear shot to the door but Momo chose not to take it.

I love Re:Vale...or rather, I love the Re:Vale that was created by Yuki and Momo...and I can see mostly Momo's influence on that main reason that I love Re:Vale: they're friendly, honest, and sincere senpai (and their music sounds pretty awesome). They're kind. They're willing to see the good in everyone. And their goal isn't to be the condescending senpai or some grand “let's inspire a new generation of idols” or whatever...they're out there doing their jobs to make people happy. They make people laugh. They entertain people. And while doing all of this, they're actively trying to clean up the shadier bits of the entertainment industry by shielding their kohai—rival groups. They aren't out to sabotage the other groups—the genuinely want everyone to be friends and inspire each other to do a good job and create awesome things.

So...yeah...I finished Season 3 part 2 of Idolish7 and realize yet again that I'm hooked on this series. The entire series is amazing because it doesn't follow the generic “Okay, line up, every bishi gets their own feature episode and then we'll do a group song somewhere in the last 3 episodes”...there's drama, there's “scandal”, and throughout it all there's everyone (except those involved with Tsukumo...bar Toma) trying to be genuine people/characters. Yeah...Watch Idolish7. It's another bishi-packed idol anime. WTF?! Who gave you the right to play with my feelings like this?! Who gave you the right to put tearjerker in what I thought was a generic otome-esque series!? Like...at first I was annoyed by Nagi...but then there was that thing with Mitsuki in tears and Nagi being there for him...and then part 2 just had to have that shot of Nagi with tear-tracks on his face...WTF!? Who gave you the right to play with my feels like this i7?!

I‘m doing some researches for the HS AU and I was wondering… is Aizawa actually a good friend towards Mic?

I have the feeling that the relationship is a bit one sided and that Zawa actually had a better bond with Shirakumo?

I could be wrong but there are few moments in the manga where Mic asked to go out for lunch or a drink and Aizawa declined or was straight up annoyed. Its also mostly Mic who tries to cheer up Aizawa or looks out for him but are there also scenes where it’s the other way around and you have the feeling that Zawa actually cares for Mic?

Reading Vigilantes...I think that initially, Mic was sorta the 2nd best-friend kinda thing.

I see Mic as the kind of popular kid that everybody likes, the one that's involved in pretty much all the friend groups. I see a sort of symbolic divide between the three boys with their choice in eye-wear. Shirakumo loans his goggles to Aizawa and the two become goggle-besties. Mic wore shades, not goggles...but they pushed that they were the eyewear trio and such...but then Sensouji was in on the eyewear thing. Eventually, Sensouji and Mic wore shades while Shirakumo and Aizawa wore goggles. I think this is sorta symbolic of the friendship--that Aizawa was closer to Shirakumo than with Mic.

My interpretation is that Shirakumo was the kind of person Aizawa idolized. He saw the difference between them with the stray cat. Aizawa left the cat his umbrella but wasn't willing to take the cat with him. He was too stuck on the consequences of taking in the cat and such. "If I can't take care of you, it'd suck to give you hope." or something. Shirakumo didn't even bother to think of these consequences, he just took the cat. I think Aizawa envied his personality and thus wanted to befriend Shirakumo...to try to be more like him and such. Shirakumo was class clown and such but was also another extrovert that doled out his friendship unconditionally...so I guess he basically adopted the introverted-Aizawa whereas Mic was more the popular kid that had a place in all friend groups and such. Different eyewear, different internship etc.

Throughout vigilantes, we see that Aizawa doesn't really seem to care if he lives or dies. He'll do his job while he lives, but he doesn't seem to care either way how he meets his end or when. I take that to mean that up to that point he honestly did not value anything in life...so I don't think he cared about the friendship with Mic in the same way as what he had with Shirakumo at this point.

My interpretation is that what we see in present canon is the first time Aizawa takes the initiative and says what he wants to say about their friendship. Mic's always been by his side and supporting him...but Aizawa at first only looked up to Shirakumo. I think his words, "If you go, I'll go" and such are significant now because they show that Mic finally got through to him. Aizawa finally accepts the friendship and finally realizes that Mic has been with him the whole time. He felt like *he* lost Shirakumo, not *they* lost Shirakumo...at least until they see Kurogiri together. I guess that makes him realize that he still has Mic...that if Mic were to become another Nomu too he'd truly be alone.

It has me thinking...*they* lost Midnight--not one or the other, they'll mourn her together and I think Aizawa will have to come to terms with the idea of shared grief and that he shouldn't throw himself into dangerous fights as a coping strategy after all this.

fun food for thought: in japanese, thirteen calls aizawa ‘senpai’, which could imply that they were in school at the same time. thirteen is also 29, which would canonically put them a grade under aizawa, making him their senpai in school if they’d gone to UA. so with this information, it’s possible that thirteen is the only person on the ‘teaching staff’ (they’re not a teacher) besides those directly involved who knew anything about shirakumo. i wonder if that’s weird for aizawa at all.

it also doesn’t exactly make complete sense for aizawa to be a work senpai since thirteen is like a contractor to UA and is not a teacher or a… teacher-ling? there’s no reason for thirteen to consider aizawa’s position to be ‘above’ theirs, so it’s a bit more likely a holdover from school days

"Senpai" is also used in work industries. It shows seniority. It's not just a school thing. In some entertainment industries like acting or voice-acting the same title is used to show seniority. There are a few interviews where some people mention the awkwardness of calling someone biologically younger than them "senpai" because that individual has a longer career in that specific field than they do.

All Might refers to Thirteen and Aizawa as "Kouhai" when he shows up at USJ. In this case, he's likely speaking about Hero careers. All Might has had a longer hero career than pretty much all of the staff. However, they'd be All Might's "senpai" in the realm of teaching.

The fact that Thirteen uses "senpai"  on Aizawa while Aizawa doesn't use it on Midnight could simply be a sign of their personalities. Thirteen's a very polite person this shows in the way they use the proper honorifics/ways to address people. It's a sign of respect. Aizawa doesn't have to have been a mentor to Thirteen for the honorific to mean something. Either Aizawa has a longer teaching career than him, or it's a hold-over from the school days, or both. I do like the idea of it being both though--like, Thirteen being a year below him and having respect for Aizawa and being aware of what happened to Shirakumo. The idea that they know about Aizawa and that incident while Aizawa didn't pay enough attention to realize it would be kind of cute. Like...maybe Aizawa just thinks it’s a career thing but during one of their group drinking sessions Thirteen casually says something like, “I’d love to study the mechanics of that capture weapon of yours, Senpai. Back in our school days it really was just a long scrap of fabric.” “Back in our...what?” “Yes! We went to UA together, Senpai. I was a year under you though. You were amazing in the Sport’s Festival. Oh, and I still have pictures from the Culture Festiv--” “Do. Not--” “YEEEEEAAAAAH! MAID CAFE! I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THAT!”. Before Mic can ramble on about how he got Aizawa into the maid costume, the capture scarf is wound around his face, effectively gagging him. 

To be fair, Aizawa and Midnight were friends. It's possible they dropped honorifics between each other because they're friends--so the lack of "senpai" isn't a sign of disrespect so much as it's a sign of their closeness. Midnight was a year ahead of him and Vigilantes shows us that she's been teaching at UA longer than Aizawa (she recommended him for a position there). Knowing their personalities, he probably tried referring to her as "senpai" early on in their teaching career and she flipped out at the cuteness, but felt it was a bit awkward and put distance between them and all. "Why you being so proper?! Screw that--I got more pics of Sushi to show you!"  

Japanese honorifics are a pretty convoluted and intense field to get into. Considering HeroAcademia takes place in a futuristic setting and not "historical Japan", I assume that honorific-usage isn't as strict as it was during feudalism or whatever. In our modern reality honorifics are important, but you won't necessarily get penalized heavily for not using them (depending on context and the personalities/preferences of the people involved).

Nagant is apparently in her late thirties and depending how late in her thirties, could be almost a decade older than Aizawa

Hawks is 22/23 in canon and Nagant is supposed to be his predecessor.

Based on his interaction with her, it sounds like he didn't have a chance to meet her or work with her, just that he knew her as the Hero Commission's ace before he was trained, like...he speaks to/of her like she was supposed to be the role model he never got to meet. He was supposed to be the next Nagant.

Hawks was picked up by the Commission when he was still in single digits from the look of it. Even if we assume he was picked up by the Commission at 10 years old, that's still 12 years Nagant would have been out of (the) Commission for Hawks to train and work alone before canon.

From some of the flashbacks it looks like Nagant wasn't picked up by the Commission until she was in a Hero Course or graduated from a Hero Course. Assume she was picked up after graduation, she would have been around 18 years old. She'd have to have worked for them for a few years before dropping out...but even if we assume she dropped at age 18 that would still make her 30/31 years old in present canon, which is how old Aizawa is. Considering she would have likely worked for the commission for at least a couple of years after graduating then yes, she has to be older than Aizawa.
