AL: Al made dinner tonight. 

Vixey was working later, so he really had no problem. He was confident leaving Nick and Arthur in charge of the Barn. He drove home. They’d lived in Foxhave for a few months now, but it still thrilled him to drive up and look at the little cottage, his heart panging that this was his home.

Now there were still things to get used to. The longer commute, for one. The fact that it got much colder at night here. The creaky pipes that sometimes kept him up in the middle of the night.

But he wouldn’t trade reaching an arm over in bed to hug Vixey on sunny Saturday mornings and then going downstairs to make chocolate chip pancakes for anything in the world. 

It was starting to feel like something comfortable, something routine. And still, he got excited when Vixey opened the door and the dog barked, like she was coming home from some long business trip. (In reality, they’d taken lunch together). 

Al gave his black bean chilli a stir and then popped out of the kitchen to greet Vixey with a hug.

“How was work?” he asked. “Dinner will be ready in a sec – just gotta let it cool down for a sec. I’ll grab the bowls.”

Was there anything more miserable and annoying than helping your friends move?

Yes, okay, there were. But in the moment, as Jun huffed and puffed and grunted and his arms ached underneath the box he hauled through the door, he did not think so! Bah, he wished he had come up for some excuse for today. Tomorrow, he'd pay for this too, his whole back would ache - didn't he get enough of that, working on his feet all day at the market, lifting things here and there?!

(To be clear, Jun would have never actually made an excuse. Helping friends move was a duty he took seriously, if he complained every step of the way.)

"What is even in this thing?!" he griped. "Ach! My back!" With another huff, he finally set the thing down, then gave his back a good old crack!

Tiana brought up the rear, carrying a considerably-less-heavy though still-cumbersome bundle of Al's framed posters. "Where do you want this?" Tiana asked, and then she saw Jun looking like he was in need of a chiropractor or something. "Is Jun okay?"

"Oh, he's fine!" Vixey said with a playful roll of her eyes. "He just has to complain otherwise we might think he actually enjoys helping out and ask him to do it more." It was, of course, said in affectionate jest.

She started rifling through the box of stuff seh had set down. Not that she should be doing that...there was still plenty to unload.

"Awh," she said, pulling out a framed picture. "Look! It's us!" She turned it towards Al, Jun, and Tiana. "We'll have to find the perfect place for this."

Al beamed, looking over Vixey’s shoulder at the picture. It was taken at Al’s birthday party a few years ago, everyone gathered around a table full of food. 

“Ooh! Let’s put it right on the mantle.” 

Of course, they probably needed to dust off the mantle, but Al took the picture and set it right in the center. 

“Ta-da!”

It’d be the first one there, though Al hoped one day it would be full of pictures! Of all of them, but also of… well, of the family he and Vixey would one day have :)

"Oh, nothing really all that exciting. Just new seasonings and sauces for the sandwiches," Tiana replied, smiling to herself. She could sense that Al was a little cautious in his support and she appreciated where it was coming from. Tiana had been reluctant to take this job, and she was still a little embarrassed about it. But the truth was that she loved it. "You can say it. I know it's, like, kind of sad. But I'm actually really happy there. I don't have to worry about the business stuff for a little while. I can just enjoy, y'know, cooking."

“I don’t think it’s sad at all,” said Al. “Honestly, there’s nothing that saps the love outta something you enjoy like turning it into work.” He chuckled a little as he stirred the batter. “Trust me; I get it. Took me a while to find a good balance between that. Heck, I’m probably still learning.”

He smiled fondly at Tiana.

“But getting back to the roots of what you love is a good thing. Reminds you why you loved it in the first place, y’know?”

Vixey couldn't believe it! It had taken a few months, but they'd managed to close the deal on Foxhaven. It was a sweet little three bedroom house, with an additional basement for Al. A few acres. A little bit of a fixer upper, but nothing they couldn't manage.

The perfect house to start a family.

The cottage was bustling today. Vixey's brothers and parents were over helping. There were multiple trucks in the yard: one from the farmhouse, one from Al's apartment, and one from where they'd ordered a bunch of extra, new furniture.

To fill up this big, lovely house.

Vixey put down a few boxes on the table in the living room and picked up the checklist. "Oh--that--goes...in here, I think!" she said to the next person coming in the door.

Al’s dreams were coming true!

Here he was, in a beautiful house that he and his wife (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) had just bought, with his closest friends, loading up their lives together. 

He had a stack of boxes and he turned into the room — 

And then immediately turned 90 degrees on his heel to place the boxes where Vixey directed him.

“Oh — Jun, over here! This group’s in the corner of the living room.”

"Perfect. This is, like, R&D," Tiana joked as she swirled the berries around the colander. "You know, I've actually been doing a little bit of that at the Lucky Cat. It's mostly Cass's ideas, since it's her cafe but she lets me try my own thing now and then."

“Oh yeah?” said Al, his face lighting up some. “Whatcha been working on? Are you allowed to tell me or is that top secret culinary information that you can’t share?”

He was glad that Tiana was finding her footing after Tiana’s Place closed. He hadn’t wanted to bring up her new job first, because he wasn’t sure if she was still touchy about it. But this was a good sign!

Smee paged through the newspaper as he sipped his tea, his daily routine here at Hatter's. As usual, it was more bad news. Nobody had caught MAFIA yet. Everything was more and more expensive. And lo and behold, what did the town board have to say for themselves?

Smee hmphed to himself as he turned the page, drawing the attention of a nearby patron. "Oh, it's just the usual things," he grumbled. Then he realized who the man was. "McWiggin, right? You used to be on Board, didn't you? Why didn't you run last year?"

Al totally understood the hmph. He felt that way too! Honestly, he’d been about to agree, till this man recognized him — 

“Oh, well, I was getting married right around election season,” Al confessed. “My fiance wanted all my time devoted to wedding planning. It was honestly a lot. We, er, didn’t end up getting married, though,” he added. “But by then… well, it was too late to submit myself for the running!”

"You're already talking about kids? That's exciting! I got married so young, Cornelius and I didn't even talk about it until my friends had kids and I was like '...so, we gonna do that?'" Ah, to be young and in love again. "So its a good thing you're on the same page there."

A pause, as she sipped her drink.

"You'll be a great dad when you're ready for that."

Al blushed a little.

“It came up,” he said. “We don’t really have a timeline on it, especially since this happened so suddenly. But it’s definitely something we both want. We’re also very career-focused at the moment, so we’ll have to see where it all lands but …”

Well, Al wanted kids. A family. It was something he’d planned with Nora, though she’d been very insistent that they start immediately after the wedding. And at first Al had been alright with that! But then he’d slowly realized that maybe they weren’t a right fit… and he’d been having doubts that he tried to swallow…

But with Vixey, well, he wasn’t sure what their future held, but it felt right.

“I’m excited to do everything with her,” he gushed. “Is that corny? I don’t care!”
