Let's talk about the Loki series
1) Loki was out of character. The only thing he had in common with the Loki we loved, was the appearance, if you count in Thor 1 and Avengers and exclude all the other movies, as the script sgould have done. He talked too much, Loki never talked, it started after Thor 2 and was/is humiliating. He is the butt of every joke, he can't trick anyone, he can't fight and lacks brain. For gods shake, he took down Captain America, stood up to Thor, but somehow he gets beaten by mortals and his own self... in his own show !
2) "I dOn't EnjOY hUrtIng pEOplE". Said he who would kill an entire race, he who killed his biological father, he who would kill his brother, while in sane mind, he who killed dark elves and humans without second thought, he who took an eyeball off a living person ect. (No, Thanos mind trick is not canon, it is not in any of the movies, so all sales final !)
3) loki is not bi. "BUt... bUt... In thE mYths And cOmIcs...." No, stop ! He was never bi. The few time he went with men, a male horse or with women as a woman himself, were because he was tricking them, not for love or enjoyment. (Corrent me if I'm wrong, I have only read the comics till 2014). It would make more sense if he was asexual, since he had 0 interest in courting in the MCU, never seen, mentioned or implied. Just create a new character Disney, don't be lazy.
4) His, out of nowhere, fan service, relationship with his new mary-sue girlfriend reminds me of an other big franchise Disney destroyed....

Loki fandom has reached its lower point.
Loki is in front of our eyes mocked, depowered, nerfed into idiot, humiliated, abused, harassed, even tortured, made a sidekick who doesnt matter to the plot in his own show (in Thor movies he was a key character!!!!) and Loki stans are supporting it, defend why its ok, even laugh at it
Plus writers literaly took events of previous movies and either ignored them or twisted them around to fit the narrative they wanted to present and again - Loki stans fully support it.
It cant be worse. It just cant. Wait it can. If Loki was killed in a similar way like in Infinity war, and fans would say "but he overstayed his welcome", "he was getting boring anyway" because now they have Sylvie the killing machine (sshh she is a strong woman, those can kill as they go)
The problem is, we, the older fans, the ones who call themselves Loki's army, who've been there since Thor 1 and understand what this character stood for and want that version of Loki back, are outnumbered by the new mindless fans who think Loki can only be like ragnarok. Which is great, but he had like years of character development.
No sexual interest whatsoever even mentioned in the past decade and yet.... I want even go to the part that the trailers were created to attract those old fans, with the idea of a mischievious powerful Loki who was reunited with his brother and traveled tgrough time causing mishief. Oh, aslo, they never showed any romance between Loki and Sylvie at the trailers and went as far as to say that there was NOT going to be anything like it.
Disney just doesn't care for the fans. It all comes down to profit. I hope this does not end up like the new Star Wars did..... to be more accurate, I hope it does. Disney spread the word that there was going to be a massive LGBT+ represetation in the new Star wars and we got nothing. Just like Loki. No Stormpilot, no Kylux. Nothing. Maybe Disney is the homophobic one....idk
Sylki IS Reylo.
Loki/Kylo Ren : they both come from a royal family, they both have that goth look. They saw/listened to their parents while in distress and abra katabra ! They're good now ! They have been training in the force/magic since the day they were born, but were easily outmatched by an equally/not trained person. They have fight skills, they are huge, masculine, yet they were defeated by their female version. Last but not least, they both end up having a forced, service fan romance, just for the hell of it. With a woman. After some days of them having met. God! Where is Elsa when you need her ?
Sylvie/Rey : an overpowered Mary Sue played by brilliant actors, who deserved better.
I just find it weird when I read posts from ‚Loki fans‘ who state ‚all it needed for Loki to turn into an adorkable cute bean was some love uwu‘ like I mean - why did they like Loki in the first place? Why did they like Loki before the series came out? Because he looked good? Is that it? Or did they even like him before?
I came to like him, because - unfortunately - I saw many of my own struggles in him and I hoped for him to find his place. To find honour and love and respect in a world that had only let him down until then. I wanted him to learn to rise from the dust like a Phoenix, unlock his true power, become truly invincible and be a wise king to the Jotuns, forming an alliance with Thor as the rightful King of Asgard and maintaining the peace in all of the nine realms. Overcoming the psychological and later on the physical abuse he had endured during his quarrel with Odin and later on the (supposed) abduction by Thanos.
Loki should have broken the vicious circle between abuser and abused, formed new alliances and should have learned to trust, respect and love himself, relying on himself and thus also being able to forgive and to go on.
I‘m sad and I’m disappointed because there had been a really nice psychological build up for Loki’s Character in the MCU until Ragnarok and when they would have had the chance to pick it back up and to let Loki HEAL in a mature way… they gave us that sorry TV-Circus for kids who just don’t know any better.
Everyone may enjoy this product if they like. Good for each and everyone of you. Seriously. I wish I could enjoy it too. But it’s really just a whole new concept of a character I loved that makes him absolutely unrecognizable to me. And I am very sad about it. It’s like losing a friend. It’s like losing a bit of hope.
Those aren't Loki fans. Those are recently added fans who think they like Loki because they saw Ragnarok and think that Loki was being mind tricked in Avengers and in Thor 1. My ass. They will like anything that Disney serves them, since they have no brainsells. They don't even know that Loki fans are called Loki's army and we are here since Thor 1. We understand what Loki was in the first movies, want that Loki back and we utterly dislike everything about the crappy series. To me, Loki died in Endgame. The serie's Loki is weak, idiotic poor replica of true Loki.
There's something that bothers me about the whole "don't like it, don't watch it 😏😏😏" attitude surrounding the Loki Series. In normal circumstances, I'd say yeah, valid, but the issue in this specific case is that this show was specifically, deceptively marketed directly to us, the people who dislike it.
The teaser trailers included footage that wasn't even included in the show (Loki having won the battle of NY, Loki on the Asgardian throne), and never even hinted at any of the other characters and OCs that they threw in there. I hate to pull this card, but as a film student, one of the big things you learn is that editing is everything. Someone edited those trailers specifically to show Loki causing mayhem and being himself, as we know him according to where he should be on the timeline (post-avengers, slightly pre-T:DW). This show was marketed as "following the adventures of Loki! He escaped with the Tesseract, remember?!! Who knows what that might bring!! What will the God of Mischief do with an infinity stone??? Watch this show to find out!!"
And in literally the first scene, the tesseract was confiscated and didn't matter at all after one or two brief moments in the very first episode.
The DB Cooper scene was edited and marketed and picked apart and rebuilt to imply that the version of Loki who escaped with the Tesseract would make amends with his brother and incorporate his Asgardian friends and allies into the adventures that we would follow in the show.
This series was marketed to those of us who wanted to follow the mischievous adventures of Loki as he wreaks havoc with the stolen Infinity Stone.
So when we sat down to watch it, we were genuinely excited. It didn't come from a place of hate. We didn't think to ourselves "HA! I bet this will be so horrible! I can't WAIT to post mean things on Twitter about it!"
We were thinking "Finally! We get some good Loki content, where he's not a side character or villain! The focus is going to be purely on him and his adventures!"
Only for him to be immediately overpowered and made useless in the first ten minutes. But the hate didn't start there. We still held out hope.
"This is just the first episode, after all," we thought. "This is just setting things up. Surely the next episode will show him more and let him live up to more of his potential."
And then we watched him turn into a joke. We watched the focus slowly shift away from him to a plethora of OCs who stole the spotlight. And still, we watched, not out of hatred, but out of the dim hope that things would turn around, that he would come into his own and take control of the show with his name on it.
But that never happened, and now we're left to analyze and vent and discuss with each other about all that could have been.
Only to have all of our arguments dismissed with a snide side remark from people who didn't care that Loki was sidelined. That he was treated like a joke. That he kissed himself, but she's a lady so it's okay. That he wasn't the character we know and love. That he wasn't the main character of his own show.
Our opinions, our criticism, our analysis, none of it matters. Because "if you don't like it, then don't watch it."
I'm not sorry for being hopefully optimistic that maybe things would look up for my favorite character, especially when that is what was promised from even before it aired.
Kylux and 'sinning'
The first time I saw ‘sin’ used to describe a ship in a 'funny’ way was Kylux. It made me uncomfortable and it still kind of does. But I think it’s good to understand the evolution of the use of this term.
To start with, it was often compared to ships like Finnrey, Finnpoe, and Finnpoerey. There was even a chart of “sinful ships”. Finnpoerey was especially high on the pure part. All three of them were. Hanleia was a lot further down. The “pure” part described ships that involved sweet, loving supportive relationships.
Reylo was down near Kykux, but Kylux was the absolute bottom.
At that time Kylux was described as sinful because a lot of the ship was “let’s make them kill 50 billion people and have sex in their space ashes” or “let’s make Kylo a monster and Hux want to haclve sex with him on the dead bodies of Kylo’s victims”.
In other words, stuff that was just wicked, evil, wrong and sinful. Kylo and Hux were people who either had no moral compass of joyfully ran into doing horrible things. “Sin” described not the sex acts, but the horrible things Kylo and Hux did.
Now, as we got further and further away from The Force Awakens being in theaters, things began to change. Finnpoe took a painful noes dive (I’m going to say for reasons for racism, both in and without of the ship. Also the feeling of superiority certain shippers put off for liking a “good” and “pure” ship was frustrating, since enough acted like it got them out of a get out of being racist free card. But that’s a discussion for another day).
Kylux suddenly took off. What was a small ship that focused mainly on violent, evil characters with little to no redeeming personal values suddenly became huge. I want to note that when the ship was small there was little talk about racism around it like there is now. Kylux fans stayed in their lane. They wrote stories about true horror shows of human beings, but didn’t mischaracterize the heroes. Finn never got thrown under the bus to make Hux look like a woobie. Rey was never seduced by Kylo’s sexy curls to the dark side. Finn wasn’t treated like just a janitor and Poe wasn’t turned into a hyper sexualized valentino.
Things have changed. I still love kylux. I still write for it. I write mainly fluff. I like reading about evil people cuddling.
Kylux, a ship of two monsterous human beings, already had the label of being 'sin’ because of the things the characters did. But as the ship got bigger and bigger how we portrayed the characters changed. They stopped being just monsters. Suddenly we wrote coffeeshop aus, high school aus (I’ve done this). We gave them kids (done this too).
Suddenly calling this ship a “sin” ship changed in connotation. The concept of “sinning” began to apply simply to reading about two gay men having sex. People who were new didn’t realize the original context and began to use it to mean what it means now.
I’ve never been comfortable with calling ships “sinning”. But when the term first began to be used to made sense. No one could call stories about Kylo eviserating people with his bare hands just because it was fun anything but a terrible thing for a person to do. There wasn’t anything wrong with liking horror. But as fandom does, we applied “sinners” to ourselves because our ship dealt in “sin”.
And as I have said, while it was never comfortable for me to hear, it made sense why they picked this term. Now we have moved so far from why the term was used.
As has already been said: there are fans who are religious. There are people for whom sin is not a laughing matter. A lot of us grew up hearing (and still hearing) that being queer is a sin. It takes a lot of work to move past that. Being refered to as a sinner for us is distressing. I understand it doesn’t mean anything to people who aren’t of faith. But to queer people of faith it’s very uncomfortable.
As I said, it was uncomfortable when we were talking about monster!kylux and cannibal!kylux and murderers!kylux and war criminals!kylux. Now that it refers to fluff!kylux, totally normal relationship!kylux, it suddenly takes on the connotation of “if you’re queer meaning you’re going to hell”. And while that doesn’t mean something to all of you, it means something to us.
And it doesn’t help that there are now new people in the fandom who never knew why the term was used, but use it because others use it.
So yes, this is another plea to stop. I understand why you still use it. It’s fun and irreverant. It’s a middle finger to establishment. Also, a lot of other people use it. Just please be aware that it’s painful to some of us.
Well said ! 😊👏
A very large number of kylux shippers are members of the queer community themselves. A lot of people ship kylux because they themselves are members of the queer community and find it easier to identify with villain characters as these characters are often the ones who are queer coded and are transcendent of “socially acceptable” norms.
On top of this a lot of kylux shippers are mentally ill, and once again it is often the “villain” characters who are coded as being mentally ill and neurodivergent etc, (especially kylo ren). Saying that all kylux shippers are “homofetishists” is dismissive and incredibly offensive. I’m fairly certain that the poc kylux shippers would also have a problem with you deciding that they’re all racist.
You’re allowed to not like a ship and have problems with the problematic aspects (which do exist) but this post is absolutely inappropriate on every level. You do not get to speak over the voices of the queer and mentally ill people and poc who find joy and escapism and comfort in shipping kylux.
Well said ! Like, what is wrong with these people ? Killjoys. Let us have our fan. It's not real live anyway...
Racism in the Star Wars fandom: The Tumblr Years
In December 2014, the first trailer for The Force Awakens dropped.
On Tumblr, the Star Wars fandom started to come out of dormancy for the first time.
As a kylux fan, i feel attacked. What is wrong with you people? In what underdeveloped country you grew up to think like that ? Let fans have their favourite ship and don't judge. It's love, not rocket science, nor racism. Kylo Ren interacted with Hux, it was interesting, some liked it, thus, kylux was born! The reason there are many kylux fanfics/art, is because there wasn't enough of them together in the movies, or maybe because they are evil and most fangirls like villains, or maybe we liked their faces better. So what ? Also, it sounds like you don't know what the kylux fandom is, cause if you've actually read kylux fics (not the thursty ones), the most popular ones, yes there are not Shakespear, but are about love, overcoming trauma and learning to love yourself. Sounds like you need some of those.... and maybe you should get out and do something about real live racism...
Btw…the fact that Kylux seems to be the most popular ship in the SW fandom followed by R*ylo… will forever haunt me. This isn’t about whether these ships are bad or not, it’s about the fandom trends. How Kylo being shipped with a white male side character is way more popular than shipping any of the (female, MOC) heroes with each other. How shipping Rey with someone she hates is more popular than shipping her with anyone she likes. That ships involving the white male villain are way more popular than other ships… not bc there is no material to ship other characters in the movies but bc people WANT to write romance mostly about this white male villain who has NO romantic partner IN these movies bc he actually hates both people he is being shipped with….and still people prefer to write about HIS romances! You can’t pretend this has nothing to do with the fact that the alternative would be writing romance for a white woman with a MOC or between two MOC….
( Kylux has more than two times as many fanfics as Finnpoe, just to put things into perspective……)
Consider:
Both Rey and Hux have literally tried to kill Kylo Ren
Kylo Ren has been both physically and verbally abusive to Rey and Hux
Yet, these are the people that the large majority of (racist) fans swear Kylo is secretly in love with.
I find it interesting - there is no non-Finnrey ship that is het that is founded on any sort of sense. Reylo is garbage. Reyux is laughably stupid, and Damerey is antiblack and based on the belief that “Hi, I’m ____” means “Let’s bang now.”
I also don’t understand why wanting two people who loathe each other to fuck is outpacing what WAS a pairing of two men who truly like each other. I say WAS because the current Poe Dameron bears no resemblance to the TFA version. But when Kylux started taking off, “old Poe” was still in existence.
I’ve been in fandoms where characters have died or have been written off, and yet content was still created for them (i.e. Snupin in Harry Potter, even through Sirus’s death, and later, Remus’s). But why do I have the funny feeling that had Finn in fact died in TLJ and Finnrey was still a thing, people would be screeching “BUT HE’S DEAD!!!!11111″ and all of these racist and anti-Asian supposed “Finnrose shippers” wouldn’t give a fuck about Finn or Rose?
This is literally one of the most obviously racist fandoms I’ve ever been in. It’s sick.
Meanwhile, I ship Kylux, hate Reylo, and like Rose/Finn/Rey/Poe in any combination (or sometimes Poe/Ben, past if in the Cannon timeline.)
So your personal shipping preference has what exactly to do with a post about general trends in fandom?????
I’ve found others with similar views, and, honestly, a good third of Kylux is Kylux x reader, so I personally wouldn’t count it. Honestly, my point is that these ships don’t immediately equal being racist, or hating the female and poc characters.
This isn’t the point I was making. It’s the tendency in fandom that is off-putting… the statistics. Not that every individual who ships these things must be openly and truly racist or hate women…
Honestly, I’ve been looking at those statistics in horror for over a year now. I was, and am, completely disgusted by this, and I remember that my first thought when I saw the ship list on Ao3 was first like “where’s hanleia and anidala?” Followed by “wait… where’s FINNREY?” Because I like Cannon ships and it never even crossed my mind that finnrey wasn’t Cannon, and I still can’t see how people justify shipping Reylo.
The popularity of Kylux is a big part of that, though. Literally, the only two young white guys in the first trilogy to feature main characters of color and a woman protagonist are the top ship. That’s messed up. Reylo is worse (imo) in many ways, but the popularity of Kylux is no less of an example of racist patterns in fandom. There’s really no way to argue that focusing on Hux and Kylo in transformative fanworks is not prioritizing whiteness, even if the non-white-male characters aren’t mistreated or disliked.
One of the problems is that when whiteness is so blatantly prioritized by fandom when the canon in inclusive, everyone who contributes to it says they’re not part of the problem, or even that most people contributing to it aren’t part of the problem, so in this particular case there’s really no problem.
It isn’t true. If a mass of perfectly racially conscientious people keeps coming up with the same racist result over and over again, that conscientiousness needs to be questioned.
Ok, like, what is wrong with you people? In what underdeveloped country you grew up to think like that ? Let fans have their favourite ship and don't judge. It's love and a getaway from reality. With that said, I am a kylux fan, I admit it, but I also love my stormpilot! There are several reasons as to why kylux is "popular". 1) there wasn't enough of them together in the movies so we create it. 2)maybe because they are evil and most fangirls are attracted to fictional villains (Lokis army). 3)maybe we like their faces better. So what ? If you ACTUALLY read kylux fics (not the thursty ones), the most popular out there are about love, overcoming trauma and learning to love yourself. Sounds like you need some of those....
