The only time we really hear the Water Tribe get referred to as a "Nation" is by implication when people say "the Four Nations". Using "Tribe" for the Water Tribe & only them (like, why not "the Fire Tribe"? Or "the Water Kingdom"?) Does a couple of things, including 1. Implying that the Water Tribe are less sophisticated & less "evolved" & are more "primitive" than the other Nations, 2. Perpetuating racist colonial language irl and 3. Is doing so needlessly when it doesn't actually make sense within the canon worldbuilding

The reason why is that White people called us (Native people) "tribes" as in to mean they saw hundreds & hundreds & hundreds of our very unique cultures, religions, practices, and languages etc as all being the exact same, we were homogenized in their mind, but any differences were just subsections of that singular group. AKA, "tribes". That's why many people prefer to use the term "Nation", as in like "Blackfoot Nation" or "Cree Nation" or "Navajo Nation", over the word "tribe", because its usage and history comes from racial homogenization by our colonizers.

But there's only one Water Tribe. There's the North/South pole plus the swamp benders, but ATLA doesn't really go too far into the route of creating entirely different cultures (outside of clothing/food) & languages & religions for each bending Nation. The usage of "tribe" originally came from that opinion of homogenization, but if there's only the single water tribe, why is it still in use here? What would be the in-universe explanation for this? If anything they are kinda unintentionally doing the same if not worse version of using the word "tribe" in-universe
