“You’re doing amazing too,” Miguel smiled, kissing Amber on the head, “well I figured that you deserved it after doing all the work while you were pregnant with them. Plus in a way it kind of feels like relearning how to ride a bike after having done it before with Sofia.” 

Amber half-smiled at him when he kissed her head a second time, “Thanks.” She listened to him and said, “I guess it’s just an adjustment for both of us. I know I’m still fairly new to parenting but... I guess I’m not used to it--to you being as hands-on involved since you’re usually more involved with your work. And I’m glad that you are, really.” Amber hastened to assure. “With how often you were working before Demetri came into our lives, I was really worried. And even after we adopted him before the twins came... I’ll admit I was still kind of worried but now... When it comes to the twins, I kinda feel like I don’t do much besides nurse them.”

Miguel kissed the top of Amber’s head with a bit of a contented sigh. It was strange, starting over parenting again - and while they had with Demetri, and Miguel felt like they had adjusted well with the boy - it was different with the newborns. “I’m tired, but I’m pretty sure that’s normal,” Miguel stated, “Though it’s definitely taken a lot of getting used to having babies in the house again.” 

Amber leaned into his side, as soon as they could. The kiss to the top of their head made them smile while shutting their eyes and listening to Miguel. “Definitely normal,” they echoed, not so much from personal experience but from everything she had been told and seen from friends who were already parents. “Well Sofia and Demetri already showed this, but it’s worth repeating that you’re an amazing Dad. And seeing you with the twins is one of my favorite sights.” Even with the ‘off’ feeling that they couldn’t quite place, Amber really did melt whenever seeing Miguel cradling one or both of the twins in his arms. “You’ve more than earned a break though, especially with all the time you’ve given me to rest and recoup.”

The twins were a handful, which Miguel had been expecting. But there was something that came back to him when it came to the twins. Maybe it was because he had raised Sofia by himself, but he couldn’t help himself from getting up with the twins, trying to get things, and in a way he almost felt like Amber deserved the break after she had carried the two of them. He had gotten the two of them down before going out into the front room, hoping that the two of them would stay asleep. “I think that we have a few hours,” Miguel said, smiling over at Amber, “I don’t think that either of them will be awake any time soon.” 

Upon getting home from the hospital, Amber had been in a unique place of delirious bliss. Of course there was the fatigue and the soreness, but it was completely worth it, given how utterly precious Isobel and Jessamine were. It was so sweet to watch Miguel be a new dad all over again--something she hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing before with Sofia. His parenting wasn’t new to her, since she’d seen him with Sofia and Demetri but with newborns, it was a different level of precious.

Over the next couple of weeks, she was grateful for how hands-on Miguel had been but there was something that had her feeling a bit...off. She tried not to overthink it, but the feeling kept coming back to her like a persistent poke to her still-sensitive chest. Having just finished pumping and storing some milk away in the freezer, Amber headed back to the living room and sat down on the couch, letting out a sleepy sigh. But she opened her eyes when Miguel came padding into the room. She reached over to the baby monitor she’d left on the couch and held it up with a smile, “If they cut their nap short, we’ll know A-S-A-P.” She padded the space beside her and as soon as she could, she rested her head on his shoulder. “You’ve been really attentive to them since we got home. How are you doing?”

Awww, I’m so glad– and how amazing! He’s going to have an entire city built up. Do a see a city planner in his future? Lol. That’s what I’ve heard, but I’m praying you get some Z’s. So happy to hear that Miguel has been helping out so much. Parenthood looks good on ya’ll! Please do! I would absolutely love to when you and they are ready. Those names are precious… you know I’m gushing over here, right? It was nice, thank you! Pretty low-key this year, but I’ve been running on empty so I’m okay with that. RJ got us a dinner reservation at a place I’ve been dying to try, so it was more of a romantic celebration for sure.

Definitely! And we don’t have to post it anywhere if you don’t want. We can scrapbook them or something! And the glitter is a must. We can even get fancy and do it ombre style!

Honestly, I wouldn’t even be surprised If he did! Lol! Oh gosh, you know I didn’t even think about city planner for him but that would be amazing! I keep thinking he’s going to be a literal master builder for the Lego company or something, or an engineer or architect. He has so many possibilities in his future which I’m so thrilled about for him. Whatever he chooses to do, Miguel and I have been really vocal about supporting him.

Thanks a bunch! I’m sleeping when I can, which so far has been more often than I was anticipating, but the twins are definitely operating on their own schedules and we’ve been adjusting to it. And with Miguel being so helpful with the twins, I’m able to still help Demetri with his school work and spending some time with him so he’s not being cheated of time and attention. I totally believe that about you with the names though! I’ve already started calling them Izzy and Jessie. Your birthday celebration sounds so nice! Sometimes low-key is so much better than the big parties and whatnot. What did you think of the restaurant?

Emmy knew she probably had priorities when it came to shopping, but all she could think about now was buying baby stuff for Amber and the babies that would be here soon enough. She also probably should have had a little more control when it came to her appetite, but the buttery smell of their pretzels she couldn’t ignore for long. Just as she was about to pop a piece of hers into her mouth, Emmy stopped to grin again. “Oh my goodness– that’s amazing! Then my birthday time will be extra special. Especially if they’re already born!” After a delighted chuckle, she finally took a bite. “That’s great then. I bet it’s kind of a relief to have an idea when to expect them. I know I keep gushing but I’m just so happy for you.”

Amber grinned, “Most definitely! Three times the balloons and cake!” She laughed a bit, mostly joking about the cake excess, while walking over to a table for them to snack at for a bit. “Mhm, I think the waiting and wondering would drive me crazy, but at least having a really small window kind of chills out that anxious excitement feeling, y’know?” Emmy’s happiness had Amber beaming, “Thank you so much, Emmy! I’m really lucky to have a friend like you, and these twins will be lucky to have their Aunt Emmy in their lives.”

That makes me so happy to hear! I figured he would put it to great use! Not as much as you, my friend! Well, how about now that they’ve escaped? Are you feeling better, or is sleep hard to come by? He definitely has, and Miguel got him some Legos for him to make original structures, so he’s really glad to have the table to work on. Oh gosh, Emmy I’m in love all over again. Sleep is not easy but Miguel’s been really mindful and letting me get rest if the girls aren’t hungry. I promise to have you over soon to meet them though. But yes! We’ve named them Isobel and Jessamine. Aww you’re so welcome! I’m glad you got them! How was your birthday?

Storm Prep || Amber & Miguel

Miguel was already over the storm. Even though he preferred to work from home, it sitll felt different when he wasn’t allowed to leave. Almost claustrophobic. Plus with Sofia there, and Demetri interrupting him, he had developed a habit of trying to lock himself in his office so that he would be able to get a few things done.  He was in the middle of paperwork (which almost was calming with how repetitive it was) when he heard Amber call out.  “Yes?” he called after he opened his office door, “Is everything okay?”

“Um...” Amber loudly hummed back, the panic bleeding further into her tone. “I don’t think so. Come here, please? Now?” The unfamiliar pressure bearing low on her large bump had her convinced that she was in labor but she didn’t want to say it aloud and somehow confirm it by doing so. Not yet anyway. Amber’s mind was already racing, knowing it was too early. The twins weren’t due for weeks, but even so, the storm caused closures all throughout Portland. Not once did Amber even entertain the idea of birthing the twins at home and now there was a very real possibility that that was going to happen. Turning their panic-stricken gaze to Miguel, she forced herself to say, “I-I think I’m going into labor.”

Well thank you, I don’t know what we really need as a housewarming gift, but I’ll just say thank you for whatever it is in advance.  We did kind of keep moving on the down low though, I don’t think either of us wanted it to be a huge deal. 

At least it’s almost done.  I know that due dates don’t mean anything, but do you have a countdown going anyway?  Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Maybe he’ll get more into it when he gets older. 

I had a feeling you might say something like that but yes, I’m totally getting you something. I promise it’ll be something useful too. But I’m glad you’ve all got somewhere that’s more accommodating for your family. Your dogs must really like the bigger space too, huh?

So, so true. But yes! Since there’s multiples and I’m supposed to be induced March 28th so it’s a little bit more likely that they’ll get here on time. But we’ll see! I’ve been journalling throughout my pregnancy whenever I remember to, and that’s mostly where I’ve been counting down. I hope he will get into school a bit more when he gets older too. He’s not a bad student, academically, but it can be hard to get him to buckle down and get his work done sometimes. Since he does like to socialize in his own way, I think it’ll become an incentive for him, like if he gets into clubs or sports or things like that.

Yeah, that sounds great. I mean I crave fruit all the time anyway so that just sounds like heaven. Like you can ask Dante how many times I’ve made him pick up mangoes from the grocery store. But I’m sure that the yoga helps, though actually having them there will probably be amazing. I definitely recommend getting all of the baby snuggles that you can. 

Oooo mangoes. Excellent fruit choice. But yes, my doctor said that the yoga’s a plus. I’m really excited to see them which I know will make the whole labor part worth it. The snuggles are going to be so nice though. When I try to get them from Demetri, he either tries to turn it into some kind of pretend attack from the “Obi monster” and wants to play-fight, or he does something gross and totally ruins the moment. Has that been your favorite part of being a parent to a baby--the snuggles?

“Well I’m glad that you could handle it, I don’t think that I’ve ever been black Friday shopping, at least not since Sofia was a baby, but I still tried to avoid it then,” Miguel chuckled, “I was thinking maybe homemade mini-pizzas? Might be fun to do altogether after we’ve got everything else done today. Though i might be procrastinating getting this done.” 

“Oh trust me, I don’t recommend it. People are out of their minds about some of the sales. Now that Cyber Monday’s a thing, I’ve gone Black Friday shopping a lot less.” Thinking about Black Friday did make them smile a ibt, thinking about old memories with friends. “You’ll get it, babe. Plus you’ve got a volunteer helper on standby,” Amber said with a soft smile. “But it might be worth calling someone to install a generator that automatically comes on if the power goes off. That way you won’t have to hassle with it every time there’s a chance for a power outage.” While unpacking the groceries in the kitchen, Amber circled back to dinner and said, “Pizza sounds good, and I think we have everything to make them.”

In the middle of the ugly storm outside, Amber was curled up on the couch, a blanket half draped on their body while Han snoozed on the floor beneath them. Amber was nodding off while one of Amber’s favorite movies played on the TV. The middle of The Incredibles was long forgotten, however, when a squeezing discomfort started low towards the front of their large baby bump. Amber’s eyes snapped open and while instinctively gripping where the pain had come, they repositioned themself to sit up while calling out, “Miguuueel!?” in a loud, wary tone.

Sky’s doing great.  I think since we moved into Dante’s old place that has helped us all out a lot because there’s a lot more space than in Benjy’s old apartment so we’re not all over each other. And there’s a much less chance of me tripping over anyone’s things. But I think they’re glad to be able to go back to school, they’ve missed their friends. 

I can’t blame you for being tired, pregnancy sounds exhaustion. But that sounds like a kid, he got all these days off so why not pretend that it’s the same as summer vacation.  But he’ll get in the groove again. 

Oh that’s so good to hear. I’m glad that they’re doing so well, and that things have improved with you all having moved into somewhere more spacious. Although now that I know that you guys have moved, I wanna get you a belated housewarming gift!

It definitely is, more so at the very end than any other part, although I don’t miss the morning sickness at the beginning either. The middle of it was the best of the trimesters. That’s very true though. I know he’ll be mostly excited to see his friends again but I don’t really expect too much excitement for the academic aspect of school from a 3rd grader lol.

I miss it too. But I can’t really blame you. I’m not sure a ton about how it works, but from what I can tell the drinking a glass of wine during pregancy advice is still new-ish so I’d be cautious too.  How have you been feeling? 

Yeah, exactly! And other than pickle juice, I kinda lucked out with my longer lasting craving of different fruits, so I wanna keep on the healthy track. Honestly I’ve been a bit of a basket case: mopey, tired and achy one minute and moody and antsy the next. But I’m still trying to stick to as much of my routine with taking walks and doing yoga each day as much as I can. Thankfully the twins will be here soon though.
