Mack practically hiccuped on the last word, throwing out his hand and doing a childish pinky swear gesture. Toff narrowed his eyes and frowned, trying to figure out their motive for visiting this part of the house.
Will kept his face blank but inside he was mentally categorising any hint that might give them away. Mack’s drunken radical honesty was the potential liability and he prepared himself to step in, even if he was also feeling worse for the wear from the numerous birthday shots he’d done.
“And did you touch anything you shouldn’t have?” their host asked as he herded them out of Cat’s office and podcast set-up area.
Will bit his lip, feeling the weight of Mack’s unsubtle gaze and his too-red lips out of the corner of his eye. “Nope,” he said breezily. “You caught us before we were able to wreck anything.”
This is going to be controversial but I read the first chapter of The Last King of Faerie and... it's quite clunky writing? And exposition-heavy and sure some of that was always going to be there to catch everyone up in the time skip but that first scene with Catarina and Ty was almost painful to read in its depiction of Ty's autism and his and Livvy's situation. And the latter half of chapter one, it felt very forced trying to get all the old characters and have them interacting with Dru. :/
The only part that felt like old Cassandra Clare was Kit's section in Devon, which seemed suitably ominous and atmospheric while also catching us up to where Kit has been the past four years.
I went back and reread the first chapters of Lady Midnight and Chain of Gold (not the prologues) and there's such a marked difference in the flow, ease of immersing the readers back into the Shadowhunter world and introduction of the characters in a way that felt natural. Especially Chain of Gold! I think that book may be the high point of Cassandra Clare's writing for me, even if I prefer overall The Dark Artifices series.
like. the overwrought mawkish celebrini crosby narratives at worlds are annoying and would seem cheap if they weren't literally being canonized by the hockey canada brass and sid himself. which is fun to think about on account of him not really abdicating his seat for cmd or nate the same way he's decided to really groom mack for this role, whether because sid is old enough for the waves of next gen to finally, actually humble him in a way they've never done before, or because macklin is a convenient, ego stroking protege who flatters his legacy in playing style and dedication to the craft, or maybe its that mack has a kind of boyish charm and willingness to be in front of the camera that means he can feed the beast of timbits mastercard ccm airbnb capitalism that has been left wanting between various canadian scions idk. and then on the other hand you're watching the anointing oils daubed on macklins face as the broadcast and journalists lay it on so cloyingly thick and then you remember oh right lol your little rebrand post trial, your little slush fund, your little declining sport enrollment, your tarnished reputation. like sure the public coronation can be all the former but more importantly it is very much the latter with the timing being just a happy coincidence. paper tiger boy king decked in red maple leafs to save your sorry asses in more ways than one lmao
this has existed in my drafts/discord messages/meanders of my deranged psyche in one form or another for ages now, but recent discussion #onhere re:bleak boyband bingo encouraged me to clean up the list for human consumption and present it in bingo format, which immediately made it 150 times more user-friendly and thus postable. while obviously visually inspired by bbb, thematically i think it is only adjacent at best because the focus here is fundamentally about relationships, even when it comes to squares like The Weight Of Legacy or Signing With Your Hometown Team (inspired by dylan larkin and john tavares respectively, whose narratives are soooo tied to The Ghost Of Other People it's almost laughable). ideally this board could be incorporated into a larger bbb-style board that would also include broader, less shippy archetypes; but i personally am Not Good at that so what you get today is 81 squares of love&horny.
color-coded version hopefully conveys the fact that while i do believe the 3x3 cards can stand alone, there is a continuity both vertically and horizontally AND diagonally. after all, one of the characteristics of sportsrpf is the fluidity of the dynamics— linemates today, facing off tomorrow, etc.
some of these squares are so very clearly about one specific pairing to me, but depending on your hockeyfandom entry point i think it might vary drastically and i'm very curious about what people's first associations to specific Narratives(tm) are. might reblog later with examples but for now in the name of science i want this to hit the market neutrally and let it percolate

You know, I am GENUINELY unsure that I understood the Pining While Fucking trope before Heated Rivalry. I'm convinced that it's 80% of the absolute crack cocaine infused into Hollanov. The other 20% is the rivalry and the language barrier and the forbidden eroticism of it all but mostly it's the pining. A fucking masterclass of the trope. Rachel Reid really sat down to write the sequel to her coffee shop AU and cooked the literary equivalent of crystal meth.
joining the war on kids reading any book they want on the side of kids reading any book they want. simply you will be fine. it's even good to be confronted with things you don't understand and even find upsetting, uncomfortable and difficult. it's a surprise tool that will help you later.
