No seriously, what the fuck is up with parents these days and trying to speedrun not interacting with their children as fast as possible. Every day I see things online about the "cry-it-out" method, where moms will swear up and down that babies cry all day to manipulate you into giving them attention when they actually don't need anything, and that you should ignore them so they learn not to cry. I swear every time I read that bullshit I want to scream. Your BABY is not MANIPULATING YOU! All they know is that they are scared, they're hungry, they're uncomfortable, they're lonely, they're tired, and the only positive thing they know is the comfort of their parent. For the love of everything good on this green earth, comfort your baby when they cry. Play with your kids. Involve them in everything you do. I don't care if you're tired, I don't care if you're sick of them, they need you. You are all they have. They cry because they don't know what they need, they cry because they want to be close to you. They bother you all day because they love you and want to be around you. Trying to get the world record for quickest to not interact with your kids will only result in sad, isolated children who feel unloved and unwanted. They won't trust you, they will believe that they are a burden and that they don't deserve the time of day.

Please, please, PLEASE, I beg you, if you treat any child like this, do not have children.

While I 100% agree with this in the case of babies (and playing with your kids obvi like come on don't have kids if you don't want to spend time with them), it is important to differentiate this with toddlers and young children learning to self soothe! At a certain point your toddler needs to learn that you're not going to come running every time they cry, or else they will never learn to pick themselves back up when they fall or to get back to sleep after a nightmare. The ability to self soothe is so important for adult development, as if you don't learn it as a child, it can develop into learned helplessness and anxiety, as well as attachment and abandonment disorders. Self soothing is important and healthy! It doesn't make you a bad parent.
