Café I'm in has shelves with piles of second-hand hardback books with the dust jackets removed for cozy bookish ambience, but I think the aesthetic they're going for only works if it's old books, these are mostly too new and it's no good. Like from a distance if you aren't paying attention you might assume they're old battered things from the 1930s but then you look and it's like Richard Hammond's autobiography and a Jack Reacher thriller and stuff like that. As someone who is pathetically susceptible to a pinterest cozy bookshop aesthetic this is upsetting to me, I feel an implied contempt in this shallowest possible execution of the concept, the presumption that I'll be satisfied at a glance and not want to look any closer. Little pots of obviously plastic houseplants on the same shelves complete the scene.

i think what ppl who havent seen that much doctor who needs to understand is how incredibly rare it is for an episode to have both a big emotional impact and a remotely decent plot. the van gogh episode everyone loves is a wonderful ep about mental health and depression and being kind and the plot is that theres a giant invisible alien that only van gogh can see thats angry cause it cant find another alien to fuck. any episode with an alien thats actually scary to some degree is guaranteed to feature the most boring and unexciting characters possible that you wont feel remotely sad about when they die

the ponds dynamic is great bc its like. what if there was a man with the power of a god and when he fucks up (because he isnt a god) it still fucks up everyone around him like he was one. and what if god had an attack dog and a sacrificial lamb and both of them loved the god and are willing to be hurt by him but hate to see the other hurt. but they cant do anything about it because they are not the gods in this story. and also rory is here
