i will never ever understand the idea of committing a violent act at something that is supposed to be a celebration of life and joy and love. thinking about all the csds i’ve been to across the country, munich and darmstadt and frankfurt and mannheim and stuttgart and yes berlin, all the people i’ve met from a drag queen on stilettos taking me underneath her rainbow parasol on a forty degree day to the elderly gay man singing his heart out with me to dancing on my own to the butch/femme lesbian couple telling me they loved my outfit. my heart goes out to everyone who was there in berlin and everyone who’s injured and my heart bleeds for the person who is now dead because of an act of unspeakable inexcusable atrocious hatred. this being politicised and weaponised to fuel islamophobia and racism is horrible. this year at csd in munich there was a guy in a keffiyeh handing out free water bottles. god, so many people from countries like mine come here to feel safer, and they’re unable to because of things like this on one hand and the media reaction on the other. this wasn’t an act of violence against the general public and democracy, this was a specific act of violence against the queer community. we are people, we sing and we dance and we laugh and we cry and we’re just like you. it is pivotal now more than ever to remember that.
