Mangione faced two criminal trials; this federal case dealing with stalking charges and a separate New York case dealing with murder charges. Mangione's lawyers have now tried to get the New York case dismissed for "double jeopardy", the legal concept that you can't be punished multiple times for the same offense.
This was not a plea deal, and prosecutors plan to seek life in prison for Mangione at his sentencing (scheduled for December).

This makes me feel like such a boomer, but I hate it how all media has been TikTok-ified and algorithm primed. Songs are shorter, designed for short viral clips rather than a full listening experience. TV shows and movies are sloppier, dragging on and on, assuming you’ll be on your phone and have it only in the background. Even books have been chewed up and spat back out as easily consumable tropes, with bite-sized chapters and mannequins for characters. This late stage capitalism hellscape we’re in has made art into something you snack on rather than savor.
alright, i'll be the one to say it. ao3 and tumblr becoming "mainstream" did so much damage to the community and the writers. i have seen loads of videos and posts about:
1. people hating on writers and fics. writing is something we do for free and for fun. if you stumble upon a fanfic that isn't necessarily your cup of tea or you just don't like, scroll. dont read it. literally leave their page. you don't know if this could be the author's first work that they're so excited about, you dont know if the language they're writing in isn't their first language, you dont know that the writer could be a literal teen and loads of other reasons. fanfictions don't HAVE to be perfect. you write what you want to write because we do it for fun and enjoyment and we want to share that to the world. seriously, what is the wrong with that?..
2. x reader consumers getting WAY too entitled. the number of tiktoks i've seen that say "i run a strict program when it comes to reading fanfics." girl you aint running shit. this is FAN FICTION you're reading. F A N F I C T I O N. there is no denying that most fanfiction writes are beyond talented but just because you read one fanfic that exceeds your expectations doesn't give you the right to talk down on others that don't. people have their own personal writing style, their way of doing things and you talking shit on that isn't right.
at the end of the day, we are all humans, reading and writing is what we do and what we're meant to do. and for you to talk shit about a person WRITING is so insane. we are humans. not some robots that you can tell what to do so you can consume it.
i've seen so so many authors take down their fanfics and losing all motivation to write because of a hate comment. DONT LIKE DONT READ‼️
and to every author reading this, this community values your work and your contribution. we love u and, please, never let anyone's negative words have an effect on you.
I’ve been reading and (unseriously) writing fanfic on tumblr on and off since I was 17 years old (almost 32 now) and I really never have seen people this rabidly mean, entitled and self centered. While this is part of internet culture unfortunately and I’ve witnessed it from people who probably have miserable lives and are very unhappy with themselves, there are some other contributing factors that should be addressed.
Firstly, a lot of people are meaner because of frontal lobe damage from repeated SARS-CoV-2 infections. It’s super fucked up, it sucks, and also, people should be aware of this to combat further damage and also so that they can check themselves. I mention this as someone who masks in KN95s and N95s to maintain my cognitive function (WE DON’T HAVE A STERILIZING VACCINE) fully aware that hardly anyone will actually give a fuck. But it’s still WORTH mentioning because it’s absolutely relevant.
Secondly, as an auDHDer who doesn’t give a fuck what everyone else is doing (I only pay attention to what *I* like. I don’t scour the internet for things I hate because it’s a waste of time and that’s just not how I’m wired) it’s so fucking wild to me that people are taking the time to send hate, talk shit, etc, when they didn’t have to even consume that content. Grow the fuck up. Seriously.
When I say “grow the fuck up” I mean spend your time doing something useful. Why? Because you are exhibiting behavior that implies you’re egregiously out of touch with objective material reality and the plethora of current real world problems. For example, the new red scare in the U.S. with leftists (libs they’re coming for you too FYI because fascists are too politically illiterate to know that libs are right wing) being persecuted, attacks on disabled people + disability rights and LGBTQ+, multiple genocides occurring, concentration camps in the U.S., violent sanctions on Cuba, we kidnapped Maduro for fucks sake - on the grounds that he was kidnapped I guess any of our world leaders are also fair game for being kidnapped…but I digress. Take a break and pay attention to what is actually happening in the world! Stop consuming content you don’t like! Filter that energy into fights against systemic violence and oppression that is going to ruin your fucking life if you don’t. Fan fic is meant to be enjoyed, stop being an asshole.
P.S. if I call a fandom discord out for not being nice, for displaying lateral ableism, etc, that’s not “hate”, it’s just valid criticisms, and ones that weren’t unique to me - these criticisms were shared with others as well. So shut the fuck up and learn how to think critically, Jesus fucking Christ man.
Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.
Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.
There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.
i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.
I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case
