Okay, I just really, really need to get this out about the kiss scene since a lot of people are really upset over it and I completely understand why people were so upset about it - it wasn’t the expected, direct kiss we all wanted from them.
But just because it wasn’t expected does not automatically mean that the one we got wasn’t meaningful - please, PLEASE understand the symbolic implications of that scene and the impact the writers were trying to share to the audience.
In modern day, in Protestantism, kissing your hand showcases affections for worldly people or matters instead of complete and utter devotion to God.
Not to mention, this exact scene took place right IN FRONT OF God.
They loved each other. The new universe they made could only be created because of their love for humanity. The love that grew over centuries on centuries, the love shaped by their care for humanity. Their sacrifice hurts, it broke my heart to see the ending, but I understand why and I think it was beautiful - its a choice that’s been built on how much they care for us. They love humanity just as much as they love each other and they’ve fought for us time and time again. Its their choice; its the creation of a universe where humans have free will, paved by their love for each other, something decided by neither God, nor Heaven or Hell.
I can understand why people have qualms with the finale, but please understand that there is true intricacy in the writing of this series; I stand by that point. Their love was meaningful and those years they spent together will never lose their value because of their sacrifice - that time they spent together still existed and is still real. Their sacrifice does not take value away from that time, it always existed and always will.
