why be radically exclusionary abt queerness when you could be radically inclusionary instead. let's inflate the numbers. let's become the majority. the sky's the limit
"we can't let just ANYONE call themselves queer!!" what are you talking about. I'm steepling my fingers and gleefully cackling every time we Get Another One and you should be too. lock in.
Fuck yeah, let's make this little raft we're surviving on big as hell. If I bring my bit of driftwood and you bring yours and we let as many people join in as want to, we might end up with a functional boat.
I heard someone say 'queer is that which accepts queerness' a few weeks ago and I've been thinking about it ever since.
Back when I was active on AVEN (I have no idea what it's like now), we had two definitions of asexual -- an external definition and an internal definition. The external definition, the one that's on the wiki and the press material and that everyone uses when talking about asexuality, was of course "an asexual is someone who does not experience sexual attraction". The internal definition, the one we kept in mind when talking to each other, was "an asexual is someone who calls themself asexual".
The reason for this was very simple and very practical. In the very early AVEN and immediately pre-AVEN days, back before my time when the disparate ace communities were first finding each other and creating a public online network, there was a fair lot of exclusionist discourse. There are a lot of ways to be asexual, and the early community of course fell prey to the usual infighting about whether someone with a libido counts as asexual, whether someone who chooses to have sex can be asexual (usual tiring Purity Brigade Bullshit), whether someone without a libido counts as asexual (after all, if you have no sex drive, are you sure it's a matter of sexual orientation?), whether ace people count as lgbtq, all the usual nonsense. This worked out the way it pretty much always does -- the inclusionists "win", because exclusionists always break off into smaller and smaller communities so the largest group is, of course, the one where all different kinds of people stick together and welcome each other. And that was AVEN.
And when you're trying to have a strong community and somebody shows up at the gates saying, "hi, I think I'm asexual", it's a fucking horrible idea to start doubting their credentials. They saw the public definition and started calling themselves asexual; they're here, and now they're under the internal definition. An asexual is somebody who calls themself asexual. Sometimes, these people would be frustrated allosexuals, or people choosing to swear off sex, who might not fit the external definition of the term. We made sure that everyone knew the external definition, and there were always conversations about asexuality and how it affected our lives, if they asked us directly what we thought then we'd say "only you can know for sure" and then give our thoughts on the matter for as long as they asked for them, and other than that it wasn't anyone else's fucking business or anyone's place to judge. If people weren't nasty and didn't create problems, they could stay and call themselves whatever they wanted.
Many of these people who didn't fit the strict definition eventually left after receiving support and discovering more about themselves. Some stopped IDing as ace but became allies to the community. Some people who came in with the most "I'm a heterosexual girl who is angry at my boyfriend" intro posts you've ever seen in your life discovered that they were in fact ace and that the messages that society had taught them about sex and romance were simply not for them -- these are people who, in a gatekept community, would have been incorrectly ousted immediately.
And then there were people -- a LOT of people -- who found themselves in grey areas. People who said "okay, this community makes sense to me and is useful to me and I have so much in common with a lot of you, but not EXACTLY like you. However, what I experience may not be the strict default definition but it's an awful lot like these other members on the forum." And they formed sub-communities. The grey aces. The demisexuals. The aromantics and greyromantics. Through these dialogues, between subgroups who in a more exclusionary community would be arguing about who the "real" asexuals are and splintering off into their own communities away from all those stupid cishet fakers, we developed language to describe our similarities and differences. The sexual/romantic/aesthetic attraction model came out of these dialogues and it became so massively important to our understanding of asexuality that basically everyone in the ace/aro community describes themselves by it, as do a large number of people outside the community. The community made massive leaps ahead in just a decade or two by, well, being a community. By being a place where anybody who called the place home, and didn't bully other people in the home, was right. By being somewhere where anybody who saw "asexual: someone who doesn't experience sexual attraction" and thought "that sounds like a term with some use for me" was allowed to use it.
An asexual is somebody who does not experience sexual attraction.
An asexual is somebody who calls themselves asexual.
These definitions are not in conflict -- they are both, in concert, fundamentally necessary for a safe and vibrant community where we can protect, support, and learn about each other and ourselves.
And that is absolutely not exclusive to asexual communities.
the idea that restrooms, locker rooms, etc need to be single-sex spaces in order for women to be safe is patriarchy's way of signalling to men & boys that society doesn't expect them to behave themselves around women. it is directly antifeminist. it would be antifeminist even if trans people did not exist. a feminist society would demand that women should be safe in all spaces even when there are men there.
btw this is maybe the single most key distinguishing feature of the terfy strains of radical feminism, the seed all the rest of it springs out of: they have absolutely no faith in the ability of feminism to actually destroy patriarchy. they do not think feminism can truly build a better world. they cannot really even imagine that possibility. they think patriarchy is an inevitable natural consequence of unchangeable biological facts, and therefore the goal of feminism can only be to mitigate the worst effects of patriarchy, not to get rid of it.
they can imagine a society where women get some designated safe spaces without men around. they cannot imagine a society where the presence of men is not inherently a danger to women.

this isn't how it happened. you know this isn't how it happened. but you still keep coming back, keep disturbing my grave so you can play out your fantasies. voyeurs crowding around my autopsy, straining for the best view; pawing through my entrails like grubby butchers trying to find some golden meaning in blood and shit because you can't bear to face the cold light of truth. you just can't bear the thought of never having really known me at all.

So one of the things that can apparently contribute to kidney issues in cats is if they eat too much dry food and don't drink enough water; cats are adapted to get a lot of their water from their food since they're originally desert animals, and might not get enough water if they don't eat wet food. Unfortunately, Dozy won't eat wet food no matter what; she categorically refuses to touch the stuff. So a few months ago, we were looking for ways to get Dozy more fluids, and my wife noticed at the pet store a cat drink--basically meat broth with some floaty bits in--that was low-protein and meant for cats with kidney issues. So we figured, worth a try, right?
Great news: she loved it. Super tasty apparently. Great success. Along with the kidney-sensitive treats we found, it was a nice way to supplement her diet. Unforseen long-term consequence though: she loved it so much she began demanding it throughout the day. Like, would come up to us and meow, and meow, and meow, and not stop, until we got up, went to the kitchen, and got her some cat drink.
And by doing so on demand, we have unfortunately created a monster: no matter what we are doing at home, Dozy knows that if she sits next to you and meows, 1) you know what she wants, and 2) you know that she will not stop until you get it for her now. And when you do get it, she gets extremely excited. She will bum rush the kitchen door as you enter. She will run around your feet as you open the can. She will let out the creakiest, crunchiest, most nails-on-the-chalkboard meow you've ever heard if she thinks you're not going fast enough.
I do not begrudge her this. It is gratifying to care for a creature whose most ardent desires are so simple that it is this easy to fulfill them. But I am a little sad, because I know in my heart that I have never loved any comestible as much as she loves this cat drink. She has a pleasure of a purity and intensity that I will never know.

Cater Diamond
Cater saw the trend before you did. When you’re as chronically online as he is, it’s nearly impossible not to see all the new trends. And he knew that he had to do it to you before you got the chance to do it to him. So, the next time the two of you hung out, he had the perfect opportunity.
You had been in the kitchen grabbing a snack for both of you when he decided it was time. When you had finally sat back down on the couch, Cater hit record on his phone. “Babe, you did tell me that Ace had a MirrorMatch account.” Your hand stopped right before the bowl. “Ace!? Like our friend Ace!? Like your housemate Ace!?” Cater looked at you, mouth twitching slightly. “Yes, that Ace. I just saw him while I was scrolling through the app.”
Reaching for your phone, you laughed as you opened it. “Oh my god, I have to text this to the group chat-” You paused, looking up at him from your phone. “Cater, why do YOU have a MirrorMatch account?” Cater’s lips pressed together, the expression of someone trying not to laugh. As you both stared at each other, Cater broke into laughter, “Oh my sevens! It took you a bit to figure out that I ‘had’ an account.” He said, putting air quotes around the word had.
Pulling you closer to him, he kissed your cheek. “I saw it on Magicam, and I knew that I had to do it.” You groaned and covered your face with your hands. “I’m so embarrassed.” Laughing again, Cater pulled your hands from your face. “It’s okay, babe; your reaction was #totshilarious.”
Jack Howl
You had seen the trend a couple of times, on Magicam, but you thought nothing of it. Sure, you thought it was funny, but by the third time you saw it, it was like your algorithm wanted you to do it. Knowing that you were supposed to hang out with Jack today, you quickly put your shoes on and made your way over to Savanaclaw.
You saw Jack waiting outside; as usual, he was waiting outside for you. He insisted on waiting for you outside, and the sight of him always made your heart flip. “Hey Yuu,” Jack said as you got closer to him. “Hi Jack, I hope you weren’t waiting long.” And you gave him a peck on the cheek before you both made your way up to his dorm.
You and Jack knew how to hang out without needing to talk to each other, and that’s exactly what was happening when you thought it would be the best time to try out the prank. Jack had been checking on his plants when you hit record: “Jack, I just found Epel’s MirrorMatch account.” Jack stopped whatever he was doing, ears perked up. “Epel?” He questioned. “Like, Epel Felmier,” Jack questioned again, like you didn’t know what he said the first time.
“Yes, Jack, that Epel.” You said, trying not to laugh. “What other Epels do we know?” Jack opened his mouth like he wanted to say something, then closed it. “I mean…I don’t know, I just wanted to be sure.”
“Epel on a dating app. Wow, that’s something you don’t hear about every day,” Jack said softly, like he was actually trying to picture it. Jack looked back at you. “But why would he tell you? I mean, this isn’t something I picture him going around telling people.” He paused, thinking harder, “Or did Ace or Deuce tell you?” Jack added, nodding like that was the correct answer, “That I can see happening; you know those two can't keep a secret to save their lives.”
You laughed lightly, “No, Jack, I know because I just matched with him on here.” You said, trying to make it sound like the most normal thing you’ve said all day. His body went still immediately. “You…matched with him?…” He said in a questioning, soft voice, like he wasn’t sure about what you had said. You nodded your head, starting to feel a little bad.
Still looking at you, Jack spoke again, “Yuu, you know the only way for you to match with him is to be on the app yourself?” His ears were pointing straight up, and his tail was flicking ever so softly. You nodded your head just before Jack could speak again. “So how did you match with him then? You are joking, right?” Jack said before finally seeing that your phone was angled to catch his reaction, and he sighed, “This was a prank. Wasn’t it?” he said and crossed his arms.
“Yes, oh my god, Jack, I’m so sorry. You know I would never do that to you.” Now sitting next to you on the bed. Jack looked down at you before saying, “I can’t believe I feel for that.” And you swore you could see his cheeks heating up ever so slightly. You gave him a quick kiss as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I should’ve known that you were up to something the moment you said Epel and not Ace or Deuce.” You nudged his shoulder gently as you both finally laughed about it.
Kalim Al-Asim
You knew that the outcome of this prank could go one of two ways. First being that Kalim would know what you were doing and laugh once he found out it was a prank, or he’d panic and get so sad you’d have to stop. Never an in-between with him. And you loved it.
You found him in the common room of the Scarabia dorm. He had insisted that for you, for a ‘cozy’ hangout. His words. When he saw you, his face lit up. “Jewel! You’re here!” he beamed and bounced over to you in excitement. “I had Jamil make cookies and some tea for us.” You sat down, and Kalim plopped down beside you. Kalim was rambling at you about the new set that the Pop Music Club wants to do. “And Lilia said that we should do a punk or goth set! Don’t you think that'd be cool?”
As he talked, you subtly took out your phone. Kalim didn’t notice; he had been too busy reenacting Lilia’s ‘punk stance,’ which was just him crouching and making tiny claw hands. Clearing your throat, you pressed record, “Kalim, yesterday, I found Cater’s MirrorMatch account.” He froze mid-pose, still very excited about everything. “Cater?!” His eyes became brighter. If that’s even possible. “We should throw him a party to celebrate!” Kalim was so focused on Cater’s ‘account’ that he didn’t even think about questioning how you found out.
Biting your lip to stop yourself from laughing, “Kalim,” you said carefully, “I don’t think he’d want a party for this.” He gasped, hands flying to his chest. “He doesn’t!?” He paused, thinking very hard for a second. “Then we should at least give him a congratulatory basket. I'll have Jamil start it.”
Smiling to yourself, “Kalim, I don’t think he told anyone about it.” That made him stop, looking at you, eyes softened. “Oh, well then how do you know? Did he tell you?” Shaking your head, “No, love, he didn’t tell me. I matched with him last night.” Kalim didn’t move, not one blink; it almost looked like he wasn’t even breathing. “You matched with him,” he repeated softly, and his eyes widened. “So… that means you’re on MirrorMatch too!?” His voice cracked at the end. Reaching to grab your free hand, “Are you unhappy? Did I do something? I’m sorry, please forgive me.”
This prompted you to put your phone down and grab his other hand. “Kalim, honey. I’m sorry; it was a prank. I’m not actually on MirrorMatch.” His eyes softened, and relief washed over his face. “You’re not unhappy?” he asked, voice small. Shaking your head, “Not even a little.” He let out a long, shaky breath and threw his arms around you. Bringing you into a tight hug.
Malleus Draconia
Malleus had been waiting for you outside, for your nightly walk. As you got closer to him, he turned around, like he had felt you coming. And you know he did; a fae always can. “Hello, child of man.” Malleus greeted you, voice low and warm. You stepped into him without a second thought, wrapping your arms around him. “Hi, Horton.”
Malleus returned your hug immediately, one hand finding its place on your lower back. “Shall we begin our walk?” he asked, but still unmoving. Waiting for you to be ready. With your nod of approval, he led the way down the path the two of you usually take. As the two of you walked down the path, it was peaceful, with trees blowing in the cool nighttime wind and firefly lights wrapped around you two. “The night is calm,” he murmured, which made you smile at him.
His thumb brushed against your knuckles as he continued guiding you down the path. Malleus glanced at you, and you squeezed his hand gently, letting the silence settle between the two of you. Your free hand reached for your phone in your back pocket. You pressed record really quickly, then put it back so it just hears your conversation. “Oh, by the way. I found Silver on MirrorMatch. You didn’t tell me he had a profile on there.”
Slowing down his pace, his eyes dimming a little. “Silver,” he repeated, “On MirrorMatch.” He didn’t sound surprised. But instead, curious. “I’m sorry, child of man; I was unaware he was on that app. I did not mean to upset you,” Malleus apologized. You sent him a reassuring smile. “It's alright; I didn’t expect you to know. I only found out because I had matched with him last night.” After you said that, you felt the air change. And the sky got dark with clouds. A lot of rumbling thunder echoed in the distance, and lightning flickered behind the thunder.
Malleus didn’t speak, gasp, or stiffen. He simply stopped walking. His hand still in yours, still gentle as ever, like you were going to disappear if he held on tighter. “You on MirrorMatch?” he said as he turned towards you. “My love,” he said softly, taking your face in his hand. And his thumb traced your cheekbone; his eyes searched yours for answers. “Why did you not tell me you were unhappy with our current relationship?”
As he said it, the sky above you darkened further, and it started to rain. No storm, no downpour. But light, steady drizzles fell on the two of you. “Please, tell me what it is that I’ve done wrong.” Malleus pleaded, as the world around the two of you paused.
You now felt horrible; he didn’t know that you had been messing with him. Reaching up and grabbed the hand resting on your face. “Malleus,” you whispered, “I’m not unhappy with us.” And your eyes found each other again. “I love you. And I love us,” you squeezed his hand, which helped ground him. “I was teasing. It was a prank.” Your throat tightened when he didn’t say anything.
The rain above the two of you didn’t. It did, however, slow down, and the thunder and lightning became less violent in the distance. Malleus stared at you for what felt like forever. Then Malleus smiled at you softly. “I see,” he murmured, “A prank.” He said, leaning forward and pressing his forehead against yours. “You never cease to amaze me, my love.” And with that, you two continued your walk. Hand in hand, closer than what Sebek would like, but he doesn’t have to know that.
YAY, I'm back. Anyways, I figured that I shouldn't leave the rest of the characters out. And I feel like Cater is a criminally underrated character. I hope you guys enjoyed it😊ིྀ
