Financial Makeover series for Money Mail
Running this week in the Daily Mail’s Money Mail section, a five part financial makeover series.
It’s always a race to file commissions on edition for the daily papers. The first two were commissioned after 4:30pm for delivery the same day. Time for just two sketch submissions for approval before going to final and delivering same evening.
As time is tight I tend to second guess approval and work one of the ideas up while awaiting approval. Sometimes that even works in my favour.

Holt Vinyl Vault character branding
Jonny Record was created as a character identity for record store Holt Vinyl Vault. He appears as interchangeable window displays on the exterior of the shop and on posters, postcards & badges on the inside.
He engages with the public through captioned single panel cartoons promoting vinyl culture and his love of himself. Himself being a record.
The yellow and black branding of the Holt Vinyl Vault with the addition of magenta and white recall the palette of Jamie Reid’s ‘Never Mind The Bollocks’ cover for the Sex Pistols. Jonny’s catchphrase ‘Kiss My B-Side’ echoing the punk ethos, he’s doing things his way. Love it or leave it.
The hand drawn type treatment along with the bold palette is rolling over into design with promotional flyers and the Vault’s first ad with Mojo Magazine.
2017 Horoscopes
2017 financial predictions, ‘Will Your Sign Win Big in 2017?′ for Oscar Cainer’s Daily Mail section.
And the big spread ‘2017 Horoscopes, Will Your Ship Come in?’
Worlds only Post Office/Record shop combo to close. And then relaunch tomorrow.
Holt Vinyl Vault, the crate digger's paradise masquerading as a retro Post Office goes through the change tomorrow. In an unsustainable position as a traditional rural Post Office, evolution is casting it aside and banishing all postal needs to the far corner of a local supermarket.
The lease on the building remains, a beautiful 19th Century purpose built Post Office in the centre of a rural Georgian town and it's going vinyl only. Vinyl only. You can count vinyl only independent music stores in the UK on the fingers of one hand. This is special.
There are mountains of articles singing the praises of vinyl out there, I'm an illustrator and my world is a visual one. My life long love affair with vinyl has found a home as I re brand Holt Vinyl Vault for it's relaunch tomorrow. I created Jonny Record for the shop and he features on a series of billboard displays and printed material both on the inside and outside of the shop. Jonny will run as a series of 24 rotating billboards on the outside of the shop, every couple of weeks a new illustration to keep the frontage fresh and engage with the public. A few of those in this post.
This Vault is my local record store. When I lived in London my local record store was the last vinyl only record store in London, Intoxica on Portobello Road. It’s gone now as a result of rent increases. The Vinyl Vault building is owned by a London property group and when the lease is up, is likely to go the same way. These stores are being consigned to the history books, enjoy them while you can.
The UK’s Guardian newspaper recently voted Holt Vinyl Vault one of the 10 best independent record shops in the world. Holt Vinyl Vault, 1 Cromer Road, Norfolk, NR25 6AA.

WAITROSE FOOD magazine
Ceviche owner Martin Morales for the Speaking Of Eating section
Peruvian motifs feature strongly in the repeat background pattern drawn from the Andean influences in Martin’s cuisine. The colours of Peruvian textiles are to behold, the designs are uniquely Peruvian and drawn from strong tradition but also appear very modern. Fresh, vibrant and based on a rich tradition. Same as the Ceviche approach to Peruvian cuisine in it’s chain of London restaurants. Great celebration of the marriage of design, colour and food. Check out Ceviche

When U.S Elections Were Safe For Kids To Follow
Following the Obama re-election for The Washington Post
Back in the day when U.S electoral campaigning and presidential handovers were safe for kids to watch, I followed them through for the Washington Post. Looking over the The work I produced for Kidspost again this morning in the light of recent events it feels comforting knowing that politics is cyclical and the good times will roll again sometime, kids. In the meantime, hold on to your hats.
Below, a series following Obama’s campaign against Mitt Romney leading up to his re-election as the 44th U.S President.
Early Autumn Colours
Maintaining colour in the garden as Summer fades and Autumn approaches can be achieved by planting late bloomers. Among those I illustrated for Weekend magazine are Rudbeckias, Sedum Autumn Joy, Agastache, Echinacea, and Osteospernium

20 Year Anniversary
First Commission, The Big Issue
A heartfelt thanks to Lawrence Bogle who, 20 years ago this week whilst art directing The Big Issue took a chance on a rookie and gave me my first commission. The piece was a review of the Reservoir Dogs’ actor Ed Bunker’s reading at London’s Filthy McNasty’s. Long before my first Mac, hand drawn in india ink and copied onto acetate before back painting in acrylics and mailing down to Lawrence in London.
20 years on and the buzz of seeing my work in print is the same. Thanks to every commissioner since Lawrence that’s taken that chance, commissioned, and enabled a 20 year career as an illustrator. You know who you are, you special people. Long live illustration.
Origami, happy customer
Photos of origami boxes made from my Animals Of Africa giftwrap by a happy customer in Liverpool
Many thanks to happy customer Ed for sending over these images of complex origami boxes made from my store’s giftwrap. The animals are tightly packed together on the wrap design so I’m guessing some serious maths were employed on these.
Nice job Ed!
If anyone else is using the giftwrap for exciting projects let me know, i’ll post ‘em.
That’s a wrap.
