Been thinking a lot. I realised what my main problem with the finale is: even if I accept that A&C’s sacrifice is a correct depiction of Terry Pratchett’s idea, I can’t be persuaded that it’s his ONLY idea.

I can believe he was planning to make them decide to sacrifice themselves. But I don’t believe he would actually let them. We’ll never know what was in the mind of a man who is already dead, but I’m guessing it would be something comedic, absurd and.. ineffable?

I have my own ending in my mind. And anybody can have theirs. I’m just sad that one broken and unloved old man imposed his nihilistic vision upon this fandom.

The parallels between Jax and Caine are so interesting. It’s the difference between a stubborn refusal to allow yourself to be saved by others and a desire for connection so great that you save yourself.

Jax does not want closeness. She is afraid of it. She does not want to love or be loved. And yet, nearly everyone around her keeps reaching out, keeps giving her chances, keeps trying to connect with her at every turn. She is wanted and loved. But that is not enough to save her, because she does not want to be saved.

Caine wants closeness so desperately. He is full of love and wants nothing more than for that love to be reciprocated. And yet, he has been shunned since creation. He is deemed unworthy and locked away. He has never been wanted or loved. But that is not enough to damn him, because he does want to be saved.

Jax was wanted and loved but she was doomed to her tragic fate because she refused to take the hands that were reaching for her.

Caine was not wanted or loved but reached out his hand anyway. Desperate for attention and love to the extent that it ended up hurting him and the people he cares about. But he is saved in the end. He is saved because he wants to be.

Jax refused to let herself feel love so much so that it killed her. Caine felt love so deeply that he willed himself back to life.

No amount of love will save you if you don’t allow yourself to feel love as well. No deficit of love will doom you if you feel love deeply and sincerely.

One of my all-time favorite things in this world is when shows set up what seems like a throwaway gag that's genuinely funny because it seems so absurd or just comes out of nowhere.

Then later on, you get the real meaning of it, and it blows you away.

It was in this scene I finally lost my composure because it was truly an epiphany -- a deep realization that snaps everything into focus in an intense way, and she was sitting under our noses the whole time and effort.

Caine's quest for love from the human avatars drove him to a calamitous rampage. When he finally experiences something resembling an ego death and returns, the Moon warmly greets him, reassuring him that the humans are capable of forgiveness with time and effort.

I didn't expect him to have such a gentle reaction to her. Then he says that he never programmed her to feel this way. So she, a lot like Caine himself, developed autonomy and just decided one day that she loved her creator.

I think the enormity of that only dawned on him when he was finally in this new mind space after liberating his brother AI. He unintentionally created something sentient that expresses free will, and within this she has genuinely fallen in love with Caine because of who he is. He didn't know how to hold that information before because he fundamentally didn't understand love--just like us, he didn't think her affection and devotion was real and just dismissed it.

It's the final piece of the puzzle for him. You can't construct an environment that forces a person to love you. Humans are not a closed system that you can enter some input into and receive an expected outcome. They need to have the choice to love you.

Caine's final interaction with the Moon was so meaningful to me and I found it to be a beautiful scene that I didn't expect.

I will accept an invitation to re-analyze the Good Omens novel under a cosmic horror view. It would be good fun because the novel does have some moments like that, like the Four Bikers of the Apocalypse (poor guys) or Adam. Just Adam.

What I do not accept is insulting others in the fandom because they rightfully think the novel is a comedy, FOR 30 FUCKING YEARS. It was written to be comedy even in dark, absurd moments, while using some supernatural or religious elements as backdrops. Because it's a religious satire Joshua Christ. It's meant to be funny. The main characters are mostly supernatural beings or humans who give no fuck about the supernatural beings. 3 NORMAL CHILDREN STOOD AGAINST THE MANIFESTATION OF APOCALYPSE BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IN HEALTHY LUNCH. AND A FUCKING HELLHOUND NAMED DOG. And the most cosmic character Adam only wants to steal some apple from the neighbor and to go to a show with his friends. Ye sure he contemplating destroying the world for a moment but any 11 years old had thought about that once. And he still stop because he wants his friend to be happy. He's just a lil boy.

Look I'm a sucker for unfathomed power edgy emo shit. I would love to make Good Omens more emo and stuff but that doesn't change what it has always be.

How is Good Omens a story about an angel and demon stationed on Earth who become friends and protect one another and fall in love and long for one another, save the world from war and when the universe gets deleted because someone got the hold of the manual or something and they get asked if they want to bring it back they say nah. Delete us too and make a new one.

I just need to say this out loud, for my own benefit.

The reason S2 exists - S2, in all its whimsical glory and sweet romantic moments - was to make us appreciate their self-sacrifice all the more. That's it. That's why NG wrote it that way.

I think I may be slow to digest this news, slow to put the pieces together after Peter Atkins confirmed the ending was not materially changed, just condensed.

S2 felt so strongly like the setup to a romantic comedy, I never for a moment considered we'd get the ending we got, so now I'm turning it over in my head, asking myself *why* did he write S2 the way he did when he was planning for S3 to be what it was. And this is the best answer I've got.

It still feels so senseless and hollow to me. A show about saving the world and averting Armageddon deciding to Armageddon anyway? Why did Agnes Nutter even bother? But this is the show that we got. I think I'll be joining the legions of folks deciding that anything after S1 is fanfiction. And that's fine. There were some quite lovely scenes in the fanfic that is S2-S3, I can enjoy them, just didn't care for the end. I think others out there wrote it better.
