finished reading: the killing joke

for a self-proclaimed reader, i have been in an insane reading slump. the best way to get out of it? one shot comics. i have always been a spiderman and x-men fan so i haven’t read this classic. it was great obviously. the art is incredible. the dialogue is great and so iconic that it’d be a crime not mention it. i have no fucking clue what happens at the end but that’s what makes it fun. i hope batman is strangling him to death but i know alan moore has spoken against that interpretation. the idea of barbara’s murder driving him insane is cool to me. especially since it would go against commissioner gordon’s wishes of doing things by the book. it would end up being a sort of cosmic false retribution. batman constantly reiterates that he and joker’s relationship will end with them both killing each other and if he kills joker, the joker will have still symbolically killed everything batman stands for as a vigilante and he will have died vain and due to wrath alone (very the end of se7en).

amazing. great. beautiful. sexy.

Bonus:

I read the deluxe and I loved the Innocent Guy story too.

just finished reading: choke by chuck palahniuk (293 pages)

I really liked this. I love books either about terrible people or christ-like saints who are all powerful. Technically, Victor Mancini is both. I don’t know what it is though but it falls *just* short of 5 stars. It just didn’t have that extra depth I was looking for. Worth reading, still. Finished it in like 5 hours so it’s a short read.

P.S. I fucking love the ending of this book. “Sublime” isn’t the right word but it’s the first one that comes to mind.

reading recap:

i, for school, had to read hobbes’ leviathan, locke’s second discourse, and the communist manifesto. because of this, i haven’t been keeping up with my reading for like a 1 and half at this point.

they all sucked. Hobbes is like “We need to have one singular guy control us all because we don’t know how to do anything.” and Marx is like “We need to have no property or innovation because capitalism is the inherent evil!1!1!” it’s like idk man i think it depends. Sondheim was right, Why is it always or and never and?

Locke was honestly chill but it’s about the principle of the thing. I really hate philosophy class. I wouldn’t wish death on anyone but I kind of need my prof to have at least, a minor health scare, so I don’t have to see him. (not like cancer or anything but maybe like, strep, the Cheese Touch, or lyme disease, etc, y’know… something fake.)

just finished reading: american psycho by bret easton ellis (399 pages)

every chapter in this book is titled something innocuous like “Laundromat” or something like “Eating a corpse out of a dumpster on 42nd street” and every paragraph in this book goes like: “Jim Johnson walked over the table, he was wearing a navy blue wool double breasted coat with brass buttons from Armani with some hardbody, blonde, big tits, next to him. Something, something, Donald Trump, Fisher account, Ralph Lauren, Les Miserables, Dorsia, Videotapes, something, I killed a Laotian man yesterday, something, something.”

it’s good though.

currently reading: american psycho by bret easton ellis

good. not boring. not tedious like everyone told me. though granted i LOVE almost any first person stream of consciousness perspective (which many people find boring). i like the outfit descriptions, though it’s a common critique of the book, and i like how they all blend together into general designer nonsense. i like to imagine that patrick is just making shit up about people outfits, as if he’ll be like “she was wearing a muted navy blue wool double breasted coat with gold buttons from armani” but in reality it’s from like old navy or something. at some point patrick is on an elevator and tom cruise gets on it and gets mad at him for not saying the correct name of a movie he was in and i for some reason laughed out loud at that. the book is very funny and good as a dark comedy. i’m about 150 pages in as i’m writing this, i’m leaning towards a 5 star read as of now. i find it amusing that bret easton ellis is a relatively centrist boomer in real life, yet this is the most woke book like, ever. if you told me this was written by any given student at sarah lawrence college, i’d believe you.

just finished reading: tampa by alissa nutting (336 pages)

This book is really well-written. The MC is extremely hateable (naturally). It’s perspective is very engaging, making it surprisingly easy to read despite obviously being upsetting by nature, I finished it in a day. The prose is great. Some people may say this book was written for shock, that the author wrote this just to be an edgelord, or something like that, like in The 120 Days of Sodom. I think those people are wrong and they would probably say that about any book that had to do with p*dophilia or with a morally disagreeable main character. People like that, who can’t deal with more taboo subject matter, who lack media literacy, should probably stay reading whatever Coffee Shop AU fanfic they’re used to. This is like American Beauty if it was good, and if Kevin Spacey wasn’t in it.
