I’ve kind of always considered this as the moment when Dean first realizes what Cas is really willing to do for them. He knows Cas is willing to die, but in the life of a Winchester that’s an easy sacrifice. Now he has this picture that tells him Cas is also willing to stick around, and keep sticking around.

And for a character who had a three season long abandonment arc (his brother, his father, people just gett’n up and leaving him all the time) that’s gotta be a big deal.

I wonder what Castiel must have thought, seeing the Righteous Man he fell for drenched in ‘eau de sulfur’ and sporting a pair of black eyes? ”

Destiel Headcanons in 10.10 - the Metatron Speech

I was rewatching ‘The Hunter Games’ today and something about Metatron’s speech really struck me. Not what we did hear him say, but what we didn’t. When Dean is listing all of Metatron’s crimes a few scenes before he names (in order): stealing Cas’s grace, casting out the angels, making Gadreel kill Kevin, starting an angel war and killing Dean himself. When we first cut to this scene we don’t see Metatron addressing any of Dean’s other accusations but given his tone and the way he phrases “and Kevin’s death?” it feels like a safe bet to assume he’s been going for a while, rather than just gearing up. So it begs the question, what did he say to Dean about Cas’s grace and casting the angels out? Well, I’ve got a theory.

So as we know, the ingredients of Metatron’s spell were: the bow of a cupid, removing the heart of a nephilim and the grace of an angel. Even when I was first watching the season 8 finale I remember thinking how weird it was that the final ingredient was so unspecific. Why did it have to be Cas’s grace? Granted, he was there and available but if it could be just anyone, surely there had to be other angels in Metatron’s past that he hated more than Castiel. He was particularly vicious even to Naomi. Aside from that, Metatron is kind of woefully petty. There doesn’t seem to be any upward limit in how long he’s willing to hold a grudge. Afterall, he fled from heaven as soon as the archangels started squabbling, meaning he was probably down on Earth for at least a thousand years before the Winchesters found him, and yet still he was angry enough about being ran from his home that he decided to shut heaven forever. This does not seem like the behavior of an angel who would pass up a chance to get revenge on someone who had a more active role in the events that caused him to flee. So why Cas? I already had kind of an idea about that before I ever saw this post by thebloggerbloggerfun but now I’m basically 100% convinced that it had to be the grace of an angel who was in love with a human. And now I think Dean knows it.

I think that down there in that dungeon Metatron drove that stake home to Dean. He wouldn’t have been able to resist. It’s the perfect time to do it too, if the goal is to make it hurt as much as possible. Dean’s heavily under the influence of the Mark and likely believes himself to be past saving. Metatron is already furious that Dean was judging his morality (“My morality is being judged by Dean Winchester? How many people have suffered and died because they believed in you?”). There isn’t a doubt in my mind that Metatron wouldn’t have been able to resist forcing Dean to add Cas to that list.

Alright folks, today I’m going to be talking about the Supernatural Season 8 finale because it’s been almost two years and I’m still in awe that this is something that actually happened in real life and the show has refused to mention it again.

I am still so supremely intrigued by the ingredients of the spell that Metatron uses to send the angels down to earth.

The heart of a Nephilim

A Cupid’s bow

And the grace of an angel

At first glance, it’s very much centered around love. I’ve seen a lot of meta talking about how each ingredient relates to love in some way. A Nephilim is product of love, a cupid’d bow creates love, and….the grace of an angel? The grace seems very out of place unless it has something to do with love as well.

Which I’ll get back to.

But the ingredients usually reflect on what you want the outcome of a spell to be, especially in storytelling like Supernatural. The spell wasn’t about love. It was about greed and Metatron was incredibly selfish for sending all of the angels down to earth. What it WAS about was exactly that. Sending the angels down to earth and out of heaven.

To find a bridge between angels and humans.

A Nephilim is the product of angel and human interaction. A cupid’s bow symbolizes an angel interacting with and helping humans. It seems as if the spell itself is supposed to symbolically and physically take away bridges between angels and humanity in order to create a new one to send all of the angels down to earth.

So why Castiel’s grace?

The third and final ingredient HAS to be very important. It was left last for a reason. All Metatron said was “The grace of an angel”. Plotline-wise, that doesn’t make any sense. That final ingredient should have the exact same symbolism as the first two ingredients. More so, even. So it can’t be just any grace of an angel. It has to combine the “bridge between humanity and angels” angle as well as the “love” part of the other ingredients. It just has to. Castiel is very much the perfect bridge between the two sides. An angel that loves humanity above all else.

The only possible way that the angel grace can combine those two necessary parts is if the final ingredient was written down as “The grace of an angel in love with a human."

That is no ordinary angel’s grace that Metatron took. It was a very specific angel’s grace. The only grace that would have made the spell work. And Supernatural has very conveniently never mentioned the ingredients used to make the spell work again.

My hope for this season is this:

When Metatron inevitably has to give Castiel his grace back, I want him gloating about it. I want him to tease Castiel about how his grace was the final ingredient in the angel’s downfall. That because he was in love with a human, the angels fell.

And I want it to happen in front of Dean.

ahahaha YES.

the time when Dean and Cas stop off for dinner at a random little diner at the side of the road, which turns out to have quite the ambiance going, low lighting, soft music, even a few candles. Dean and Cas lean over the table to speak to each other, and Dean laughs at Cas’ dry jokes. when the waitress comes over, she asks whether they’d like a candle on their table, and how long they’ve been together. Dean blushes furiously and stutters out that they aren’t a couple.

the time when they’re in the grocery store, arguing happily over which brand of toothpaste to buy, pretending to take themselves very seriously. finally they hear an old woman clicking her tongue against her mouth and smiling and telling them that she and her husband used to be exactly the same.

the time when they’re sitting on a bench outside a police station, waiting for Sam to finish up an interrogation. somehow they get to talking about destiny, and fortune-telling, and then palmistry - they both turn their hands palm-up and inspect each other’s lifelines, at least Dean thinks that’s their lifelines, it could be their love lines - and then some idiot walking out of the station is yelling at them that they’re unnatural, disgusting, shouldn’t be allowed. Dean’s standing up and yelling back before he can think twice. “Your… your face is unnatural, you homophobic ape!”

the time when they somehow accidentally manage to get caught up in a pride parade whilst in a bigger city on a hunt, and Cas is squinting around, confused, and Dean is shrinking up small and not explaining anything - and then a guy comes up to Cas and says, “hey, wanna kiss?” with a sexy wink, and Cas frowns and says, after a pause, “I’m… I’m here with him,” pointing at Dean. so the guy shrugs and grins and says, “Well, kiss him already, then!” and walks off. and Cas turns to Dean, hesitates a moment, sees the mixture of sudden hope and nervousness in Dean’s eyes - and then does it, kisses him right on the lips.

the time when they went back to the bunker after the hunt had ended, walking in the door hand in hand. Sam goes, “what, are you together now?” and Dean grins shyly over at Cas and says, “Yes.” and that’s that.
