Terra Headcanon

Short version: Terra was originally a resident from Lilo’s (from Lilo and Stitch) Islands and he loved to surf.

Long version:

His interaction with Stitch/Experiment 626 in BBS was so heartwarming. I loved how Terra, even though he knew Experiment 626 was created as a weapon of chaos and destruction, extended kindness and introduced friendship to him. Terra’s readiness to accept even those who are obvious villains reveal such an innocent and soft side to his character that reminded me of Lilo and the “aloha spirit” that Hawaii—my home—is so famous for.

Hawaii is known for its diverse ethnic cultures. It is common to see people who posses many ethnicities. My head canon is that Terra is of Japanese, White, and Hawaiian descent. He originally came from Lilo’s chain of islands, which is a world that would probably be called The Paradise Islands or Islands of Aloha (I like to think that it is a world that exists near Destiny Island). Due to his Hawaiian ancestry, he’d possess a Hawaiian middle name as well—Kekoaonahoaloha; “The Warrior of Beloved Friends.”

He lived on the North Shore of Oahu (which I like to think would be a map called “The Gathering Place” if Lilo’s world exists in the KH universe much like how the KH games feature titles for each map/location in every world—Twilight Town>>Sunset Terrace, TWTNW>>Memory’s Skyscraper, etc.)

He likes to surf (his upper body and broad shoulders are fit for surfing) but he also loves to rock climb and hike. His favorite hikes are the Koko Head Ridge hike and the Pali Notches because it involves a lot of steep climbing and provide a great view of the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other.

He left the islands as a young teenage boy due to his strong desire to see what else was out there (much like Riku) and so he paddled away on his surfboard, using the stars to guide him (pacific island voyagers used the stars to navigate and I can see him totally being into astronomy i.e. his cute rambling about stars being the light of other worlds “shining down on them like a million lanterns”).

He paddled to his world’s borders and drifted off, exposed to darkness, and awoke on the shores of the Land of Departure where he made his way to the summit and met Eraqus. Eraqus decided to take Terra under his wing because he had been exposed to so much darkness while venturing beyond his world. That’s why Terra is so vulnerable to the darkness—because he had been exposed to it directly as he traveled away from home and a bit of it remained over the years despite being trained by a Keyblade Master of Light.

When he was given his keyblade glider and armor, he’d sometimes visit his home and spend all day surfing until he has to travel back to the Land of Departure.

TIFA AND THE MOON SYMBOL – WALL MARKET [analysis]

Why did Tifa wear the moon earring with her default dress? Why not stars like Aerith’s best dress?

Probably most of us fans know that Cloud and Tifa’s promise is represented by the stars. Thus, we often associate Tifa with the stars. This time in FF7R at Wall Market, Tifa wears Moon and Aerith wears Stars. Thinking about it again, Tifa is only represented by the stars concerning her relationship with Cloud. By herself, probably not! So let’s find out how the moon connects with her character:

1. Supreme Beauty Symbol

The other day I came across the Crescent Moon explanation in the Dictionary of Symbol (Jean Chevalier & Alain Gheerbrant, Penguine). The moon is mentioned as “goddess of the night, glory of the stars”. Notice when Tifa wears her default dress, she barely has any makeup. Her hair in untied. Her dress is minimal showing most of her curves and body in general. That’s the true beauty of her features. It’s reconfirmed by how the game focus on Tifa’s beauty in the dialogues.

Next, look at how the game zooms in at the 2 girls accessories because they want us to notice them.

The stars brighten the night. “The best-remembered property of the star is its luminosity and the fact that it is a source of light.” However in our eyes, comparing the stars and the moon:

• The moon is bigger and brighter than the stars

• The moon is unique, stars are abundant

• The stars compliment the moon (Notice in Sailor Moon, the moon is the princess and the stars are like her guardians, too?). Actually, the dictionary also mentioned the moon as “glory of the stars”!

Aerith’s best dress is heavier and more complicated so it covers more of her body like legs, thighs, and hip. Like her multilayered dress, her hair is also heavily done in curls and adorned with lots of flowers. She wears the most make-up with her best dress, too. Notice that her dress is red (warm tone) contrasting Tifa’s purple (cold tone). So, I think the game really tries to contrast her to Tifa and by that narratively portraying Tifa’s standout beauty and sex appeal. It doesn’t mean Aerith is not beautiful, but Tifa is the real queen of the night.

By the way, I think the Stars of Aerith could fit in the theme of celebrity. Her potrayal with the best dress is like a super star!

2. Lover Symbol

The moon also symbolizes feminine quality and the women while the Sun symbolizes masculinity and the men. In Chinese culture, the moon also represents Yin relative to the Sun’s Yang. Tifa’s dress is in cold color tone is also Yin (warm colors, Yang), which is why I think she doesn’t wear her normal signature red color here. Her depiction here is the moon against Cloud - the Sun. She is Yin while he is Yang. They are one pair.

3. True Love Symbol

The moon also indirectly represents romantic love in literature/art. Its changing phases symbolize passages of time. That quality used to emphasize on how true loves remains the same through changes of time. On this one, the devs have gone above and beyond to spell it out to us with the Cresent Moon Charm’s decsription. But even if they didn’t, naturally the moon still represents the loyalty of lovers to each other. The moon charm fits Tifa well because she is a very loyal and dedicated lover. Her love for Cloud is symbolized and witnessed by the moon. I think the devs really thought carefully about everything they planned on this game :) Stan the devs!

That’s a chapter trophy. And ykno, he did just meet Aerith again after meeting her the first time in chapter 2

Errr nope. She didn’t say that. She said look forward not back. And she said it after a very depressing conversation where she talked about her dead boyfriend. Ofc she wouldn’t want to keep dwelling on what ifs.

What, you mean the flower that symbolises reunion? So why is the chapter trophy romantic, but not this? Oh, I know, because it doesn’t fit your narrative. Cloud gave her the flower and then went missing. She looked up the meaning and kept it alive in the hope he’d be OK and come back home. Dead and buried aren’t her feelings, it’s referring literally to the flower and all the people of the slums they let down. She relates it further to the last tragedy she lived through because, shocker, it’s easy to relate one life altering tragedy to another. And she’s in a heightened emotional state. Why does Aerith always get slack, but Tifa doesn’t? It’s like you can’t even see her as a separate person outside of Cloud with her own story.

Hollow also plays during the slum scene with Tifa, Cloud and Barrett , but again, I guess that just doesn’t work for you to mention it. Hollow also has several interpretations, as stated by the developers.

Honestly I’m seeing a bit of assumptions on both sides I want to address.

I think all these scenes are very important but I notice they’re being either waved off and undermined or interpreted in some ways that honestly are confusing to me based on what we know about canon.

I specifically think the Cloud and Aerith dream is one that either gets grossly undermined as if he rejected her or it doesn’t matter. Or it gets weirdly interpreted like he just confessed his love to someone he has known for all of three days. Both of these views I think are a little extreme here’s va middle ground.

Basically Cloud wavers between the two. He has obvious feelings for Tifa but they are tied to his identity crisis and buried along with his memories and true self. And he has emerging feelings for Aerith. However it’s obviously not a love confession to Aerith. Cloud is oblivious. Cloud is mentally 16. Cloud sucks at feelings, is inexperienced doesn’t really understand how to express himself.

He’s not rejecting Aerith either. Basically we have seen him get worked up before because she’s always acting like she knows him. Which based on her situation she does. He’s always seeing that no matter what he says she will also have her say.

But now he needs to have a say. Aerith is here talking like they’ll never see eachother again. She’s saying embrace this moment, she’s talking about dying, she’s talking about being thankful for all their memories. This girl is saying goodbye. And then she says no matter what happens you can’t fall in love me it’s depending on your translation choice not real or in your imagination.

Once again she has decided everything for him. And he’s not going to let her just say goodbye.

Doesn’t he get a say? He probably has a crush on her by this point but he’s only known her for three days or so. So this is a not a full out love confession or rejection. He’s saying isn’t that for him to decide? Aren’t his feelings his own? Feelings he probably hasn’t thought of considering his face here. That’s not a I already have face.

Like it does look like he’s embarrassed, but if she’s rejecting him he’s only seen her for 36 hours, heartbroken would be a bit much. Also being sure he loves her after such a short time it would not be very Cloudlike and also be a bit much.

It looks more like a bit of shock. He gasps twice, looks away like he’s trying to be cool about it.

But I don’t think he’s in love right here.

That’s a “*gasps* Pretty girl just said love. Why does she think I would? *Looks away* She just grabbed my face. She’s touching me ” what is thisssss reaction.

He’s an awkward dork whose mentally a young boy what the heck do we expect here?

She says even if you think you have though and it gets him thinking: Why is she saying this? she’s so close I don’t not like this *reaches*

Then he snaps out of it. Don’t I get a say in all this?

In Japanese he says that’s all really one sided.

She’s deciding things on her own again.

He probably likes her, she’s charming and loveable he obviously finds her attractive based on how he reacted to her in a dress.

But as someone pointed out it’s only been 36 hours, there’s a lot on his mind. He’s in an identity crisis, his home just got destoyed again, she’s been kidnapped.

Feelings of any sort are not something he’s actually considered because we know canon Cloud is oblivious.

We know canon Cloud sucks at feelings and he’s probably really confused now. And he doesn’t really have time to piece it together so we get him being embarrassed and having this weird feeling of what is this as subtly as possible. He does this with Jessie too on his bike ride (girls are an enigma) but unlike Jessie Aerith is looking right at him and she’s saying things he can’t ignore. He can’t play it cool.

And I do think deep down he’s starting to fancy her. Obliviously.

Remember the devs have him waver between the two heroines. His feelings are doing that wavering. It’s not a direct yes or no.

But I don’t think he is in mind to realize that to piece together any confessions

And why is she here saying all this goodbye stuff?

He is caught off guard and confused. But he knows one thing definitely. He’s going to save her. Doesn’t matter what she says.

That’s a big character moment for him. And Aerith is central to the plot vas well as what she knows about herself and Cloud.

So I think it makes a lot of sense it would be highlighted in the credits. Though as it has been pointed out so are optional scenes.

And yes it can be seen as romantic but it’s because it’s showing the possibility he is open to figuring out his feelings not because he expressed his love from the rooftops like people act.

I think that’s an important distinction people skip over.

Now the Tifa scene which mostly gets criticized for being too platonic looking when obviously it’s not. Or there’s this idea that Tifa is expressing Cloud and her possible future relationship with him are dead and buried. Or she’s jealous of Aerith. Or Cloud hugging her means he’s chosen her over Aerith …I think they all miss the mark.

This scene with Tifa is equally romantic. There’s nothing platonic about it. We know canon Cloud and Tifa have feelings for eachother they just don’t know it and so they kinda dance around it. Tifa mentions Aerith because that explains why Cloud would ever have a flower. She’s also acknowledging that Aerith who’s currently kidnapped right now is on her mind. And she has had a bit of an impact on Cloud making him of all people buy flowers. There’s no jealousy there. Just acknowledgment.

Cloud isn’t saying much here because remember Marle told him to be a real friend and listen, really listen. So that’s what he’s doing. But then she starts crying. She tells him how hard she tried to keep this flower alive how much it meant for her. But it’s gone now.

The flower being dead and buried is her way of saying she had finally reunited with him a few weeks later, she finally had a place to call home she thought things would all work out but she’s lost everything again. This doesn’t mean her feelings for Cloud or Cloud’s feelings for her are dead and buried.

They are both in canon unaware of eachothers feelings for eachother until the LifeStream scene, they however both lost their home again. That’s what this signifies. Reunion they reunited but again their home is gone everything is crumbling for her.

If she feels she’s going to lose him too this is the moment he lets her know he’s still right here for her. Like he promised. Like he said he would do he will listen.

The devs say Cloud wanted to hug Tifa all this time since seeing Barret do it. His True self the buried one with feelings for Tifa break through.

Yes it’s romantic, but it’s also not a love confession either or him deciding Tifa is more important than Aerith or anything. Because he is probably unaware of why he did that he doesn’t know how this feeling thing works all he knows is one thing he wants to comfort her.

In both scenes we see Cloud can’t express his feelings well but he is resolute in being there, in helping in savings either girl.

That’s a very good sign the lessons he has learned up to now are sinking in. He’s losing that hard edge he’s willing to do things for others not himself. And both have canon romantic undertones as the devs say the hero wavers in his feelings between both girls. It’s also canon he is oblivious to both and feelings confuse him.

As for Aerith looking forward not back. If she is the OG Aerith then obviously she will have feelings for Cloud from the get go. She already has fallen for Cloud but she’s still seeing how he reminded her of Zack. This time she asks for more information about Zack from him but he doesn’t realize it. She brings it up again and sees as she suspected he doesn’t know and catches herself when she realizes she’s dwelling on Zack. Why dwell? Because he’s obviously important. And she tells herself she needs to look forward not back. She has things to do, she needs to embrace this moment. It’s a very important scene for her and it doesn’t discredit her feelings for either Zack or Cloud.

Also can we just stop with the only Aerith brings out Cloud because of the flower scene? Or saying it makes no sense and ignoring it?

He is slowly losing his hard edge already through his bonds with Avalanche. He also says tell me anyway about Jessie. Cloud is learning slowly how to listen to people like Marle told him to, he is learning to be more soft so it makes sense his adorable childlike self would want to open up to someone like Aerith and learn more about her. Especially with how sad she is in the scene.

He’s trying so hard and it’s adorable. He’s obviously not true Cloud yet because that’s a whole identity crisis he has to solve in the LifeStream by unlocking memories but he’s starting to see he can be there for others even if he himself isn’t ready to open up

So his bonds here with everyone are important and no scene should be dismissed.

As for Hollow I think it applies to the loss everyone in this game is going through and might as well be the theme song of the slums.

I don’t know why either side undermines character moments. But especially the Clerith side keeps undermining scenes with everyone except Aerith. Being a Clerith lover myself who is respectful of canon it really bothers me. And even though I also love Cloti because I didn’t get it at first (I saw it was canon but thought the devs pushed it on me at first) but have seen the devs intentions time and time again, seeing people say Cloud and Aerith have absolutely nothing romantic in canon or his scene with her is just the devs being meta talking to the fan base about his feelings being his own takes away from what this means for him in the actual story also bothers me.

Anyway I think the remake did a great job of giving Cloud Tifa and Aerith their character development and these scenes sum them up perfectly.

Leave no scene behind, they’re all precious and important unfortunately they don’t all fit into the credits.

A few updates in light of the Ultimania and Japanese version and corrections

Hollow is a song about Cloud’s perspective and anxiety specifically at the end of Pt. 1 as he stands there in the Midgar wasteland and it starts to rain.

Aerith says You can’t fall in love with me. Even if you think you have it’s not real. In Japanese she says if you do it’s just your imagination.

Nomura says Cloud specifically acts like he does in Tifa’s scene because that’s his True Self coming out and his true self is awkward and cringy in his interactions.

We now know Aerith has meta knowledge of the future so that’s clarified as her warning him of his real self not being who he thinks. Nomura says it’s like the Gold Saucer date. Cloud ain’t got a clue what she means here either.

All three resolutions are canon they all take place in the same night at different times, Barret’s is first.

All three resolutions have references when you go back to Wall Market after that night.

The only issue I have with the Aerith resolution is that it’s a dream. The other two are real. We know Aerith can talk to people in their dreams, but Cloud is in this dream as well. We all act slightly more brave in our dreams I’d say, in most circumstances. I think initially I took it as romantic. He boldly says I’m going to save you.

What ended up killing that vibe for me was the rest of the game. There is no happy reunion. Tifa seems more excited to see her than Cloud. Barret says more to her than Cloud. Cloud has his Jenova fit, and wakes up to Tifa. I swore he’d wake up to Aerith at this point. He barely says anything to her, just asks for clarification on what’s going on. Tifa pulls her out of the whisper cloud, and they move on. This was Cloud “playing hero”.

Then we get to her epic speech before entering the final battle zone, and twice he looks back at Tifa. Once because he must have heard her sigh, and the second because he says he’s heard enough howling for a lifetime.

The Sephiroth battle was also interesting in how he reacts to each girl. If you get Aerith, she asks him if he missed her and he says “Not really.” Both my husband and I were like damn… Savage. Aerith does have the best line of “So what? Screw him!” When cloud says he’s tough.

If you get Tifa first, she asks him if he needs help. He says “I don’t know about need…” He stressed the word need and walks up to her. This was a much nicer interaction to me, especially since he approached her and softly asks if she’s good to go. I also saw both of these before reading anything about the game online. This was pure, unbiased observation at this point.

The ending also put a heavy focus on Zack and Aerith. When it cuts from the initial Zack reveal, it comes back to our crew… On Aerith and her reaction. The ending is also a point when everybody except Aerith walks on. She stops because she just “passed” Zack.

Cloud having a crush on Aerith I do think was a thing by the end of Chapter 8/mid Chapter 9. She was smokin in the red dress, but its purposely overdone with fireworks and people cheering. Aerith doesn’t even like the red dress, which she quickly tells you.

However, the feeling completely seems to drop as soon as Tifa is back. They make Aerith see the flower in the bar. She knows. She saw how he was with her in the sewers and the graveyard. She’s not stupid. She’s also not an asshole.

Aerith isn’t out to make Tifa upset. This to me is clear. The friendship dynamic was put on heavy and it worked. They hit it off. Tifa saves Aerith multiple times, Aerith is thankful and they have cute moments. I hope we get to go shopping with those two…

The grabbing Cloud’s arm scene isn’t to make Tifa jealous. It’s her way of trying to make Tifa less scared, and possibly to force her to make a move if you believe in the Aerith is the biggest Cloti shipper angle. I do think it’s a nod to the triangle for fun, but not meant to piss off anybody. This is another moment where Cloud’s reaction is worth really looking at.

There are also hints of them trying to stop this bs with the love triangle. In the sewers, Cloud is about to tell Tifa he’s going to go help with the pump. Tifa cuts him off and asks Aerith. When Cloud objects, she says “Trust me, this is the best way to handle this.” Why? Because if Cloud would have favored Tifa (it would have made no sense for Aerith to go since Tifa had experience with this), then drama… From the fans. Not from the characters.

Tifa’s and Barret’s resolutions are both also worth noting.

Tifa’s was emotional because they lost everything. Again. That’s the line that hits if you know their backstory. It may not make as much sense to a new player. I think Tifas scene is much more emotional if you played the OG, similar to Aerith’s. Aerith’s can come off as arrogant if you don’t know what’s going on - and the devs did that on purpose. You’ve known her for maybe 3 days at this point, bringing up love would seem weird. Tifa’s resolution gives us a glimpse of True!Cloud, who is awkward as hell. It also tells us how Tifa knows about the reunion flowers.

Barret’s is good because he talks about Avalanche and mentions names (that you can then see on the dart board leaderboard next time you play). Barrets also brings out jealous!Cloud. Cloud seems completely uninterested until Barret brings up Al and his flowers. The mention of Tifa possibly getting flowers from some other guy gets his attention, followed by one of the most arrogant faces in the game (second to the Rufus Cloud Face). Barret’s resolutions is also why Corneo’s men know where he is, because Madam M mentions they saw a man with a gun arm in a beautiful field of flowers.

The devs want you to see all 3. It wouldn’t be in the play log if they didn’t. They made each scene appear to be at different times in the night. The only reason I don’t think it was a trophy is because … Drama.

Every character that Cloud has interacted with to this point is important for his character arc. Later on, Tifa becomes the most important aspect of Cloud’s character arc. Aerith is important for the overall plot of saving the world.

My annoyance on the shipping war is that people legit ignore most of the game to fit the narrative. I “ship” Cloti. Not because of any reason other than that’s how the story goes in the OG, and it just made more sense to me. That’s the story that was told. The remake actually is what really got me interested, once again, prior to reading anything online about it, because of the sexual tension. It’s extremely obvious, even if you do both Discovery Quests.

Aerith was not the nicest person in the OG, so I was really put off by her. I never felt that Cloud loved Aerith. I think he had a crush on her, but after replaying the OG again, I’m not even sure about that. Remake fixes the bulk of the issues I had with her character in the OG. It also makes it a bit more clear that he started to crush on her.

Tifa isn’t as noticable early on in the OG, but she becomes really important once Cloud finally cracks. He even says her opinion is the only one that counts. The Lifestream scene is blatant. Even if you get the LA Highwind scene, you already know what Cloud actually feels from the Lifestream. That’s why the HA makes more sense. The remake makes her much more noticeable in her interactions with Cloud.

Shipping is interesting. I didn’t know about this crap before. To be fair, I played FF7 before social media was really a thing, and I wasn’t really interested as heavily in FF7 as I was 8 at the time.

I just wish people would play the entire game and stop looking at it with clouded eyes. The story is incredible. The romance part is a small, very small, aspect of it. Unfortunately, it seems to dominate the conversation online. It makes new players anxious and confused, and ultimately just gets really nasty.

You made such good points!

I definitely agree that a very small part of the story is romance. The reason Cloti is canon is not because of cliches or tropes we normally see in a romance. It’s very unconventional.

When Nojima brings up that he doesn’t want to talk about his views on love friendship and family I think it’s very significant that he’s a Japanese man saying this. Because the idea in Japan is that one needs to get married and settle down to have kids to carry on the family legacy. Cloud and Tifa are living together but unmarried even though they act married. They have kids but they’re adopted in a very unconventional family dynamic where both Cloud and Barret are Marlene’s father.

Given a quote Nojima and Sakaguchi once said about wanting to show realistic stories after experiencing loss. And how FVII takes place is basically an apocalyptic world situation.

I think that makes a lot of sense. Cloud Tifa and Aerith all live very unconventional lives in a very unconventional world. Cloud’s story can’t get any more unconventional. So the LTD can miss the mark because it tries to explain the story using what we know from traditional conventional stories of romance.

And while there are SOME romantic cliches in there they’re mostly subverted.

We aren’t SUPPOSED to see a traditional romance but I think fans look for it anyway. And that really misses the mark.

As for what you said I took the dream as romantic not really Cloud’s feelings itself. He has a crush and that alone can make it romantic… but what I meant is that’s how it’s supposed to look to the audience. The ambience of the scenes are romantic. Aerith talking about love and him saying he wants to save her anyway.

But of course the underlying reality that Aerith said is there “It’s not real.” Because plot twist SOLDIER Cloud is a fake dun dun dun.

But Cloud himself doesn’t know that and he has a crush so he puts on a cool face and says he’s coming for her anyway. She can’t say goodbye and decide for him.

Then Tifa’s is supposed to also look romantic even though on the surface it seems platonic. Just friends hugging. But that’s the one Nomura tells us has Real Cloud.

Also I greatly suspect Aerith herself is killing the LTD so it might be that by her telling Cloud not to fall in love with her he listened. Remember Cloud is like a kid and he listens to what people tell him.

So he rescues Aerith but even while crushing on her she told him not to fall in love so he kind of takes a step back emotionally.

Or he may feel rejected lol. But I don’t think so given his reaction he recovered fairly quickly when she told him. He didn’t even really understand what she meant. Cloud being oblivious about feelings is part of his character.

Also I played the game before I joined the LTD and knew anything about it on social media too. I wanted him and Aerith to be together because I didn’t really like Tifa. But when it ended I definitely saw the story gave me no choice in the matter.

The illusion of choice is only up until the LifeStream after that Real Cloud takes over and does whatever the heck he wants and his feelings are definitely his feelings and we are told he has feelings for Tifa in the LifeStream. So I accepted it.

Years later I lurked all the LTD forums as a CA shipper who was interested in what made Cloti so great that was eleven years ago now.

Now I see that the story was never meant to be a romance. The relationships the characters have are all based on the story.

Ship wars tend to look at the story but often through a lens of everything is romantic vs. not romantic.

And yet we really have people saying but Cloud doesn’t calllll Tifa his girlfriend so he can’t love her…. in a world where a friggin Meteor hit the earth and an alien uses memory magic to give everyone the plague. Like relationship titles would really be the realistic focus.

It’s an unconventional story and what’s really going on is answered by looking at what’s actually happening and taking a step back from our expectations.

And there’s an inclination to use what we know about conventional stories with conventional romances to explain what is the most non conventional video game story SquareEnix has to offer. Especially with people like Sakaguchi and Nomura’s love for Gnostic Mysticism and philosophy which adds layers of complexity that aren’t normally found in a traditional story.
