What made TMI so compelling for me initially was the fact that none of the characters from the main group were particularly too likable, atleast to me. All of them were increasingly snarky teenagers (except Magnus) with very complicated feelings for/towards each other.

But that was what was so compelling when I first read it. I was like 11 or 12 mind you, mostly had been reading middle school fantasy where most characters, mains especially, were really likable in general.

But this series had a cast of sharp tongued teenagers who seemed to barely tolerate each other. But for some reason it made them so much more realistic and left so much room for emotional development, which we hardly see in ya books if you ask me. Because yeah teens DO act like that. They ARE hot headed and make and say the stupidest things while feeling the deepest things.

Anyone else remember that old post where CC goes through a list of all the TMI characters explaining how she can't kill any of them because killing Alec or Magnus would be bad gay representation, killing Maia or Magnus would be bad POC representation, killing Clary or Isabelle would be bad woman representation, killing Simon would be bad Jewish representation, and killing Jace would be boring because he's already died once.

I'm kind of obsessed with the mindset she brings to her allyship. Only kill straight white Christian men, it's why Jordan had to die.

so I started reading some very silly books

This doesn’t means anything in the grand scheme of things but it’s kind of a fun little thing. Part 2 of city of ashes is titled “The gates of hell” then the chapter right after is titled the “The seelie court”, then we learn in COHF that there is a pathway to hell (Edom) in Faerie kksksskskks

There is something very fitting that Simon, of all people, is one of the first mundanes to ever set foot in the nyc institute. Same guy who was the first daylighter in 100 years, one of the few people who had the mark of Cain, and the only person to go from mundane -> vampire -> mundane -> shadowhunter. Like wow, average guy no1 kind of changing the game here.

Sizzy is almost non-existent in the first two tmi books but then you get a line like this that makes you think about later stage sizzy. This is going to be the same Isabelle who finally gives her heart to a boy and then gets to see his memories of her stripped away...WOAHHHH

the same isabelle who only opened her door for simon when she was grieving despite him being the person in the house she knew the least

the same simon who was the first boy to get under isabelle's skin, to see and want her beyond her looks, bad cooking flaws and all

the same isabelle who couldn't stop herself from noticing the way one side of simon's mouth goes up before the other when he smiles

the same simon who came back from the dead. the same isabelle who went looking for him, wanting to get back together

There is something very sick and twisted but also intimate about Valentine kissing the dagger he wanted Luke to kill himself with. At this point Valentine is almost completely off his rockers and he still gives Luke a final act of 'love' by kissing the blade he thought was going to be the one to kill him...

thinking about lines from COB with the rest of the series in mind (especially tlkof) is very interesting. In TMI we spend a lot of time working through this mindset and seeing that love is something worth fighting for and allowing yourself the vulnerability to love others.

But then you think about it in the context of Janus, who's entire world was flip upside down by clary's death- and you see that Valentines words to him still ring true. Everyone he has ever loved has died and he is quite literally emotionally destroyed by the love he held for those around him, becoming a skeleton of his former self. He's only left with this sick and twisted perception of love, which leads to his warped view of both Clary (the one from our timeline) and Ash. I'm very interested to see if this is maybe a sentiment he will repeat to Ash in tlkof once he notices him becoming fond of Dru.
