hey so does the #ForTerry shit by finale defenders piss anyone else off? like the endless refrains of “this was for terry! this is the ending he wanted! this was what he planned all along!” in addition to being a pointless argument it’s also exploiting a dead man’s name and reputation to distract from the reality that GO3 was a product of Neil Gaiman and two of his friends. it was right there in the end credits. three writers were listed for the teleplay and only Gaiman was listed for the television story. that’s it!

like whose word are they taking for GO2/3 being from plot discussions for a never-materialized sequel to the book? Neil Gaiman?? Pathological liar and serial abuser Neil Gaiman?? give me a fucking break. as if his general character isn’t enough to make it clear he is not a trustworthy source, the man already lied through his teeth about S1 being the totality of show!omens and switched up the story to justify an obvious cash+attention grab. and some people are still taking his word that this is what he and Pratchett supposedly planned? without a shred of actual concrete evidence? i need them to expeditiously get a fucking grip

and quite frankly I don’t give a shit what anyone on the production team or from the Pratchett Estate has said on the matter. because to be blunt i’m sure it eases the discomfort of having helped produce a Gaiman creation post-2024 to focus on the other co-writer of the book and pretend it was for/inspired by him. as for whatever the Pratchett estate has said, shockingly enough being the executor of an estate does not grant you moral authority nor divine omniscience into a dead person’s thoughts. but i do think Pratchett’s whole “bulldoze my works-in-progress after I die” request sent a pretty fucking clear message that his estate ignored in favor of making money. and they got monkey paw’d by allowing Gaiman to continue writing for, and thereby forever tarnishing the legacy of, something that was at least 75% a Pratchett creation.

it’s whatever if people liked the finale but liking it AND spinning a narrative that obfuscates the ginormous rancid elephant in the room is just plain fucked up. like i get this is a “why were YOU at the devil’s sacrament situation” but at a bare minimum i think being in fandom where the source material’s creator did/does terrible things requires honesty and accountability about that fact, but apparently that’s too much for some good omens fans. this is like the final boss of the internet’s misuse of Death of the Author as a way to ignore difficult issues and pretend a creator’s opinions/biases/ideologies don’t influence their creations. turns out you don’t have to navigate complex moral dilemmas if you just distort reality and refuse to acknowledge said moral dilemmas! who knew!

and even if that were exactly the case, meaning this was the ending Terry wanted, that is no argument for it being a good ending.

Even if Terry had written it, it remains a terrible ending, in very poor taste and completely out of step with the Good Omens universe that audiences have loved over the years.

If you have a UK address there is a gov.uk petition at the moment for an investigation into the effects of Section 28.

Section 28 banned the mention of or "promotion" of being gay within schools and ushered in decades of silence and violence in this country. Its impact is currently unrecorded, but keenly felt. With the UK currently banning the discussion of being transgender in schools, libraries and other public spaces, along with the bathrooms guidance, we run a risk of repetition. We need statistics on what Section 28 did to two generations of queer people.
