Guys, help 😭 I need recommendations for fics, specifically involving protective Aziraphale and angst, no human AU. I'm a Crowley whump enthusiast, but if it's a mix of Crowley whump and Aziraphale whump, I'm all in. I fear my very specific taste put me in lack of fics to read 😭

When I started working on a little addition to my fic 'Too Late' I thought it would be just a little angsty recovery fic and that it would ba fairly short.

5k words in it turns out that I have A LOT to add to the story between their reunion and the 'epilogue' bit and it might become even longer than the original fic AND MY GOD, I SHOULD NEVER AGAIN JUST POST A FIC BECAUSE MY IMPATIENCE GETS THE BETTER OF ME, IT COULD'VE ALL BEEN INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL PIECE, SOMEONE KILL ME PLS

I actually kind of hate the, "they're part of the big bang. They make up the universe. They're in everything now" copium because like... you do understand something similar happens when we die, yes? When we die, we go into the earth, worms and bugs eat us, and we become the dirt and the grass and the trees. It might be poetic in theory, but if I get hit by a bus today, my loved ones aren't gonna be like, "omg she became the Earth. What a perfect ending! ❤️❤️❤️" Like no, that's literally just what it means to be dead.

I saw a post a week or two ago, somewhere in the Good Omens 3 tag, talking about how fans need to realize that writers don't owe them a "happy ending." Or any specific character resolution, story resolution, etc. Obviously referring to the notion the people upset about GO's finale needed to remember that they weren't entitled to the sort of ending they wanted, and there was nothing wrong with the story as it ended up concluding.

And I agree! Sort of. Meaning, I agree with the idea that people aren't entitled to a story working out the way they personally want.

BUT.

In my admittedly limited time hanging out in this fandom, I don't think that's what I've seen. It's certainly not what I personally experienced in my own viewing of the finale.

While it's perfectly reasonable to say that people aren't entitled to stories working out the way they want, I think it's just as reasonable to say that they are allowed to expect a story to function and resolve following its own internal rules. They are allowed to assume a story will maintain its genre, follow through with its message, address loose threads in a way that makes sense within its established logic.

It's not "entitled" to be weirded out and disappointed when your whimsical, fun, satirical comedy-with-a-dash-of-romance suddenly veers wildly off-course and ends up awkwardly metamorphosing into a nihilistic tragedy. It's not petty or whiny to be sad about characters you've known and loved for years being destroyed so suddenly and unexpectedly. Falling in love with a story that - for decades - has had a specific, uplifting, accepted thematic message, only to be upset when that message is abruptly tossed out and replaced with something wildly different isn't the same as demanding writers bend to your will.

Isn't that the point of choosing a genre, or an established fiction? If I want to watch something scary, I'll seek out horror. If I want something heartwarming, I'll go for... I dunno... a Pixar movie or whatever. That's not me demanding things or being entitled; it's me making a choice about what I want to see based upon the established characteristics of specific bits of media.

People aren't upset just because they didn't get the kiss they wanted; they're upset because they decided to watch GO3 with the understanding that this piece of fiction was built around a specific sort of theme and vibe and wholesome message - based upon an established canon - and then they were smacked upside the head with something entirely different.

It was disorienting for me, and I've just been partaking in this fandom for a few months. I can't even imagine how shocking and jarring it was for people who've been here for years.

I saw someone on Twitter record and speed up their process of writing and publish it to not be accused of using AI. On one hand - it's crazy that writers feel obligated to do it, on the other hand - it's an interesting idea, but I fear the amount of mistakes in my works is overwhelming enough not to ever be accused of it, therefore no one would be interested 🤣

Fanfiction Club: The Rules

This idea came to me when I woke up first thing this morning.

I have a short thought. You see, I know that when Season 2 aired, many people were disappointed. That definitely wasn't me, but I understand why they felt that way.

In the book and Season 1, the plot is important. Good Omens is a satire. Among other things, it explores humanity. People's ability to do both the best and the worst things imaginable, the ways in which religion, the promise of Heaven, and the threat of Hell affect them, and so on. Aziraphale and Crowley becoming more human, acting as spies who slowly grow closer, is not the only (nor necessarily the most important) part of the story.

This clearly changes in Season 2. The season has very little plot and is primarily focused on the development of Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship. The other characters introduced are mostly there to reveal something about Aziraphale and Crowley and their dynamic.

That was a huge shift, but I was not upset by it. To me, the change of focus made sense. It was simply a different story. Zooming in on our ineffable boys. It worked for me because it never contradicted what came before, either in terms of the plot or the general message. (Well, I would probably remove the opening scene with Aziraphale being fascinated by angel Crowley, but even that was something I could forgive.)

Therefore, I would never be angry just because Season 3 was very different from the previous seasons. A story is allowed to change its focus. However, my problem is that Season 3 contradicts what was established in Seasons 1 and 2. And it does so both in terms of the plot (humanity using free will to avert Armageddon; Gabriel and Beelzebub using theirs to try to prevent the Second Coming) and in terms of the general message (that messy and imperfect humans can still be incredibly potent when they put their minds to something; even when it feels like extremely powerful forces are against us, hope is not lost).

In the earlier nights it had been enough to just stay like this and cherish the presence he'd nearly lost. It had been enough to memorise the patterns in his demon's breath, the little sounds from the back of his throat, the twitches of his lithe body, subconscious clench of fingers on Aziraphale's arm, small adjustments tightening the serpent's hold on him. It had been enough to watch his beloved's face scrunch and relax through his journey in the dreamscape, to witness his groggy pull to wakefulness, catch the hitch in his breath upon realising that they were together, trace the lines of his smile as it blissfully chased away a carefully avoided shadow of doubt. It had been enough to give him a quiet reassurance with every reverent meeting of lips, with every small kiss mapping out the lines of his sharp-edged features softening under the affection.

...yes, it's gonna be titled with a lyric from Evermore, I am in a mood.
