I think we're seriously missing a lot of very important discussion on how disabled people are treated by the criminal law system. A whole lot of people dodge this kind of discussion either because they don't want to acknowledge that disabled people are capable of breaking the law (or even just being accused of breaking the law) like everyone else, or because they believe that everyone who has those kinds of encounters with the legal system deserves pain and suffering. But we DO need to talk about the ableism and inaccessibility are baked into the system and how disabled people are at extreme risk of being treated unfairly or even physically harmed when dealing with it.
in the US cops aren't required to provide a Deaf person an interpreter until AFTER they've been arrested which means that Deaf people go the entire interaction with police up until they're arrested without the ability to understand the speech of the cop. even after arrest, it's very common for an interpreter to not be provided even well into court proceedings.
