Symbolism and Death in Interview with the Vampire - A Series
So Vampires, right? The living dead, the feeding dead, death's cold embrace... vampires are both a manifestation of death-gone-wrong, as well as the symbolic representation of what brings about death. We can see this in formative vampire media: Dracula, the blood-sucking monarch, Nosferatu, the plague of mortal desire (sexual and not), Carmilla the aristocrat exchanging the blood of youth for beauty and long-life.
If a Vampire is symbolic of Death, what does it mean when Death makes choices? Chooses who it kills, why it kills, who it loves, how it loves? These essays are here to lay out what each character symbolizes as Death through their actions, victims, and role in the story.
These are by no means comprehensive, nor are they specific character analyses. They are tools to lay out a way to engage with the subtext of the themes of Death within the show. The goal is to help enrich the story and understanding of the characters.
