finished my true detective rewatch and one of the big things that stuck out to me this time was how often the boys - rust especially - was “framed” by the shots. he’s always enclosed in another frame, the broken glass window in the school, the car mirror, hell even the camera that records him in the interview scenes. that chase scene in the final episode, he’s got these arches over him as he goes deeper and deeper into the tunnels. arches made of foliage, stone, twigs, darkness. he’s always encircled, always framed in these shots. the circle in the ceiling of the room - you know the one - reminds me of a spotlight. and man is it so fucking cathartic, in the last 10 or so minutes there’s that shot of him in his hospital bed, and his reflection is framed by the widow pane, and then the camera zooms in, zooms in so he’s no longer framed in the window pane. no longer trapped. its just his reflection and the lights of the city. holy shit i teared up. and then for his following conversations with marty neither of them are framed. they’re not encircled. they aren’t trapped. they’re fucking free. holy shit they dont do it like this anymore
