Since there's Severance discourse on my dash:
I was disappointed in the last episode, and no, it's not because I missed my blorbos or wanted more kissing or whatever strawman people are coming up with now.
I found it a shallow, flanderized exploration of Cobel and her trauma with notably weaker writing than the rest of the show. (Her not-boyfriend said a quirky oneliner, alone, into the snow - that's not what I'm here for.)
I wanted the episode to dig deeper.
Show us the small town gossip and paranoia.
Build up the Twilight Zone vibes from the initial diner scene.
Give us some beautiful long shots of urban decay.
Let us taste how Lumon has abandoned this place.
Let us see how Lumon dispirited and aggrieved the people here.
I wanted human-sounding dialogue for the new characters instead of quips and plot-relevant omens. I wanted more from the new characters beyond "not-boyfriend" and "cult abuser".
I especially didn't like Cobel needing to be rescued from crying (and almost getting caught because she took a depression nap). We've already seen Cobel deep in the throes of unbalanced tempers. We've seen her preparing to go to this location, acting like a survivor all the while.
I don't find Cobel being so consumed by woe once she gets there that she needs to be saved by a man to be a believable place to take her character. Even if I could believe it? I don't like this as character development for her.
I love Severance. It's my favorite live action show in years. That doesn't mean every episode is going to be an automatic 10/10 for me.
I thought this episode was a 5/10. It was a disappointingly average and formulaic episode of "modern prestige television" in an otherwise spectacular show.
On top of being an awkward structural decision for the pacing of the season as a whole (we JUST had a clip show—and even if it was one of the best clip shows I have ever seen on television, another backstory episode is pushing it), it honestly felt like a Marvel short at multiple points, and from me, that's not a compliment.
If the episode was a 10/10 for you, that's fine, but I'm pretty upset to see some fans acting like the only reason you could dislike the episode is because you don't appreciate the deeper themes of Severance / aren't a real Severance fan / don't get it.
