There's a scene in very early 60's Doctor Who where a character falls into a swamp, I think, and they throw not a rag doll, but a card board cut out of the actor. 10/10 they don't make 'em like this no more

Music in Film: Sinners (2025) dir. Ryan Coogler
if sinners (2025) taught me anything, it's that it IS actually always about race.
you can be oppressed, and still promote and maintain the very same systems of oppression onto other marginalized people. being oppressed in one dimension doesn't allow you to be exempt from oppressing in other dimensions. the "villain" of the movie, remmick, being from the time period of the english colonization of ireland, all the while wanting to take a piece of sammie's own culture from him, use him for it. and this plot point coming after remmick witnesses the significance of sammie's playing within his culture, for his ancestors and how it would shape Black culture in the future.
even in today's society, ive noticed that people treat Black people like a commodity. our worth is only as much as other people decide it to be, and that's usually dependent on how much the oppressor can take from us. for example, the controversy of"internet slang" and how it is blatantly just AAVE with a bad disguise on
do you listen to Black musicians? do you watch Black movies? do you engage with Black creators? do you defend the racist tendencies you notice in your friends, in your family, or do you stay silent? do you listen when Black people tell you you've said or done something racist? do you actually care about not being racist, or do you just not want to look like you're racist?
i just think people have a very specific take on what racism is, and that if they're not committing KKK-levels of violence on people, then they're not racist. or if you've experienced oppression in one form, you cannot possibly be engaging with oppression in another form. but the ways in which we interact with other people and the world will always be through the lens of race, because that is simply what it means for oppression to be systemic, especially in the US and our current political climate
anyway 10/10 movie. highly recommend
They're also both peak cinema.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE i HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS BECAUSE
MUSIC IS SO IMPORTANT
it's so important and i will spend my WHOLE LIFE shouting that from the rooftops PLEASE
it brings connection, it crosses generations, it connects people
Music is a Universal Constant.
(which is an idea I specifically coined, and have defended on multiple occasions)
i have more thoughts hold on because like–
okay sinners??? first off fantastic movie, second off, it focuses specifically on a genre of music consistently misunderstood and whitewashed (Blues) PLUS PLUS PLUS in the scene where Sammie is playing and there are all these overlays of later genres of music (Hip-Hop, folk, Jazz, R&B, Rap, etc etc) it is HIGHLIGHTING the connection through generations that music can bring???
It's BRILLIANT. It's FANTASTIC i've watched this movie six times since it's come out.
PLUS! making the whole thing be "vampires are attracted to the connection that these specific musicians make" amazing fantastic wonderful brilliant.
and then!! we got the kpop demon hunters movie–which takes a genre that is, if we are being honest, teased a lot, or at least misunderstood when people like it (from the experience of a lot of my friends, they are like, infantalized for liking it, because of the "pop band" aesthetics that are pushed on.)
So we are taking this genre of music that is misunderstood/not really understood the weight of and saying "Yeah there is this band that is basically in charge of protecting the WHOLE WORLD from demons because of their music" and it's AMAIZNG! it's unique! it's so fun!
and don't even get me started on the individual songs, the character desgns, the choreography, it's all just so well produced!!
and again:
music is connection
is like, the WHOLE POINT!!!
And like, you know, both movies talk about how shitty things can be, and that music doesn't solve everything–but it damn sure helps.
and yeah i really like movies AND films and ESPECIALLY films about music.

(EDIT: now on inprnt!)
Ryan Coogler explained in an interview that Remmick was partially inspired by the character Death in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), noting both his eyes and demeanor.
Hands down, best scene I've seen in a film for years. Fucking art of the highest caliber. This will NEVER get old to me.
I have watched Sinners six times now, and I still get chills every time I watch this scene. Absolute CINEMA!!!
Weird and wonderful compilation of strange bird noises.
Birds evolved from dinosaurs, and they really show huh.

oh so you’re telling me the guy had a 3 page handwritten explanation of his motives and mindset and a gun and silencer that matches the description despite it being a week since the guy was shot? hmmmm interesting
But an insurance company can say it as an actual, literal policy and that's somehow okay.
Capitalists' entire existence is violent. Cops' entire existence is violent. Yet they expect nonviolence from everyone else.
This woman was arrested for WORDS.
We should rally for her as much as the guy who actually shot someone. Push back.
