As far as James was concerned, Regulus didn't like his hair. He would always look up at it, crinkle his nose and mumble 'messy' under his breath. He would constantly run his hands through James' hair trying to fix it.
James didn't have a problem with it, he knew Regulus grew up forced to do his hair a specific way. Regulus needed his hair to perfect, Sirius was the same. Regulus loved him despite his imperfect hair.
But James is a good boyfriend and he wanted to do something nice for Regulus. He was going to do his hair properly for their date tonight. He had several hair products — now half empty — sitting on the dorm sink and his hair had finally been tamed and gelled down to what James hoped Regulus liked.
When he walked out of the bathroom, Sirius' jaw dropped to the floor. "Aren't you going on a date with Regulus?" he asked, his shocked expression slowly turning into a smirk.
"Yeah, I'm leaving now," James furrowed his brows, it was all he had been going on about all week.
"And you cleared..." Sirius waved his hand, gesturing to James' hair. "this with him?"
"No, it's a surprise!" James smiled, proud.
Sirius let out a small laugh. "Oh, it'll be a surprise alright."
James didn't understand what Sirius had meant. Not until Regulus opened the door of Slytherin dorm. His eyes widened and his smile dropped. He became incredibly still as his eyes stayed trained on James' hair.
James heard Barty cackle from his bed.
Oh no.
"Your hair," Regulus whispered in such disbelief that James thought he was going to cry. "But I love your hair. Why— What did you do?"
"I thought you would like it," James had made a grave mistake. "You say it's messy."
Apparently, Regulus loved that his hair was messy. Apparently, James had mistaken Regulus' disgruntled compliments as complaints.
Regulus wouldn't let James take him out until he had successfully washed every last drop of product out of his hair. Even then, they decided to reschedule the actual date and instead, talk about how James is never allowed to surprise Regulus ever again and how Regulus should work on his compliments.

coffee or tea: Tea, funny cause I didn't drink either for a very long time, until tea was recommended to me when I couldn't sleep, and now I drink it every day, and also I can't drink coffee because I have a weak heart.
