The entirely unnecessary demise of Barnes & Noble
āWhether the Andrea Gail rolls, pitch-poles, or gets driven down, she winds up, one way or another, in a position from which she cannot recover. Among marine architects this is known as the zero-moment point ā the point of no return.ā āSebastian Junger, āThe Perfect Stormā
Posts like this arenāt my usual fare, but thereās a lot of readers on Tumblr. So yāall might be interested ā or, if not, you really should be.
On Monday, this went down:
Thatās the bloodless, matter-of-fact, ho-hum business event way of describing it. Let me paint you a different picture.
On Monday morning, every single Barnes & Noble location ā thatās 781 stores ā told their full-time employees to pack up and leave. The eliminated positions were as follows: the head cashiers (those are the people responsible for handling the money), the receiving managers (the people responsible for bringing in product and making sure it goes where it should), the digital leads (the people responsible for solving Nook problems), the newsstand leads (the people responsible for distributing the magazines), and the bargain leads (the people responsible for keeping up the massive discount sections). A few of the larger stores were able to spare their head cashiers and their receiving managers, but not many.
Just about everyone lost between 3 and 7 employees. The unofficial numbers put the total around 1,800 people.
People.
Weāre not talking post-holiday culling of seasonal workers. This was the Red Wedding. Every person laid off was a full-time employee. These were people for whom Barnes & Noble was a career. Most of them had given 5, 10, 20 years to the company. In most cases it was their sole source of income.
There was no warning.
But it gets worse.

As a former B&N employee, I can't say that any of this surprises me. They've been mismanaging for a long time, and I've seen several of their best (aka biggest and shiniest) stores close over the last couple of years. New book prices in general are terrible, and I think publishers need to look at how their practices are affecting the market.
So choose a character and start planning :P

Oh, you're gifted? Your gift is all your coworkers hating you.
I swear to the old gods and the new, if Brienne dies in the show or books, I will give up Game of Thrones forever. Iāll probably also start a protest. And then cry forever. Just so everyone knows.
This is correct
also I have an iPad
ugh so my touch screen on my phone is going bonkers; I had to make a "'gifted children' bar" appt. so, for now, I can only make phone calls, send texts, play voicemail, play music, get my emails read to me, tweet and post to tumblr. it's so primitive it's like I don't even exist.
This has been more valuable and inspirational to me than any book. I feel all of these things, especially #19.
Planning Your Cosplay panel, as given at SacAnime Winter 2017
Ever wanted to cosplay someone, but had no idea how to begin? Join cosplayer fabrickind to learn about how to take that first step! Topics covered will include costume choice, breaking down the parts of a costume, buying vs. making, researching materials and methods, and budgeting time and money.
This is just the bare bones of the panel, as many of the examples were elaborated on in-person, and it is just the slides, not any of my notes. It is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive, and is just meant for general advice and suggestion purposes only. If anyone has feedback they would like to give, feel free to do so. That said, I hope that people find this information useful.
Here is a link to a pdf of the presentation. You may download for personal use, but please do not alter the presentation, repost without permission, or do any sort of other unauthorized use. (If you have a question about how you can use this presentation, please send me a message with your question and we can work it out. I promise Iām not scary. ;]) Feel free to reblog this post as much as you want, though. I do these panels and post them because I want the information to be shared.
I hope someone finds this helpful! :]

I want you to know, and Iāve never said these words, but Iāve always felt them. Youāre a sister to me.
Hereās further awesome proof that cosplay is for everyone! Brazilian cosplayer Solange, aka Tia sol (āAunty Sunā) has won the heart of the internet with her wonderfully accurate homemade costumes and convention appearances around her home city of Manaus, Brazil.
āA friend said that I wouldnāt have the guts,ā Solange told BuzzFeed News. āI chose a character and had the costume made without saying another word.ā
āI donāt miss a single event in my city. Iād really like to visit other ones, but have you seen the price of the fares?ā
āI never thought that I would be well received among the young people, Iāve made a lot of friends during all of this.ā Cosplay conventions have become a sort of a haven for Solange: āI can launch myself into the world of make-believe, where anything goes.ā Her next event is coming up in December. āIām finishing up the painting on my new cosplay, Granny Juju from Jorelās Brother.ā
Follow Tia Sol on Facebook to keep up with her latest cosplay creations.

I just want to be clear
-I do not fundamentally understand Tumblr -this would probably be easily remedied by internet research, but at the moment I'm not emotionally prepared for that -I need to make a better blog action plan since, theoretically, I'm a writer, despite the relatively small audience I've had thus far (classes count, right?) -I will continue to use this forum as though it were a traditional blog, while reblogging very little, and blogging untraditionally All of which is to say, I'd have the profound sense that I was too old for this form if there wasn't so much porn here. I mean, Jesus, Internet, is it too much to ask for a place that there isn't porn? I'm not a prude; I've seen porn. I saw some this morning, and last night. It would just be nice to have one place where I look at unicorns, kittens and TV gifs that doesn't also have a bunch of dicks and pussies (wait for laughter). I have completely forgotten why I started writing this post.

This is your random reminder to DRINK WATER!
With all of these seasons of shows available now on the internet/in apps, I'm having trouble remembering small details when I skip around watching other shows. I think I need to be monog-show-mous.
Cosplay is about wearing your heart on your sleeves.
