These reports bringing home the truth make me more angry about the situation many people suffering with mental illnesses have to deal with. As if it wasn’t enough to be faced with a constant battle with their own mind, they have to fight to be heard, to receive the right help.
Many people will ask a family who has lost a loved one to cancer or another similar disease how they died. The response will simply be ‘cancer’, not a break down of what happened simply, cancer. The same question may be asked to someone who lost a loved ones life to depression but the answer would be ‘suicide’.
And this is where the problem begins, a cancer patient will be given all the medical care possible to help them fight it and come out the other side alive. Many people suffering with depression will be turned away and ignored due to lack of funding or trained professionals. But when a cancer patient dies, rightfully there is a lot of grief but they are remembered and loved. When a life is lost due to a suicide attempt, the victim is often described as selfish and loved ones are left with both the grief and the judgement of those around them. With the general name of ‘depression’ forgotten as if it weren’t an illness.
So why does this still happen, that people will feel the need to take their own life when the nonsense could end and they could be given the same level of care as someone suffering with cancer or other diseases. Because they both kill, they both can’t be prevented to some degree, but in both cases lives can be saved if only the right help was offered.
This can only change when enough people raise the awareness of this to fight back and I wish I was capable of expressing this to those who can make a change but this is what I can do to help and this is me making my stand. Things need to change, for those who are personally affected or knows someone who is.
