There is a very specific kind of sadness in realizing your parents loved you, and still did not always know how to meet your emotional needs.

Because it is confusing. It would almost feel easier if there was no love there at all. But sometimes there was love. In the way they tried to protect you. In the sacrifices they made. In the ways they worried about you, cared for you, wanted a good life for you.

And at the same time, there were still things missing.

Maybe comfort did not come in the way you needed it to. Maybe your feelings were not always understood, or noticed, or handled gently. Maybe you learned to keep certain parts of yourself quiet because it felt easier than trying to explain them.

That kind of hurt is difficult because it does not always come from cruelty. Sometimes it comes from people who loved you deeply, but did not know how to emotionally connect in the ways you needed. People carrying their own wounds, limitations, fears, or ways of surviving.

And you are allowed to acknowledge both truths at once.

You are allowed to recognize their love and still grieve what you needed but did not receive. Those things do not cancel each other out.

Forgiveness, for a lot of people, is not pretending nothing hurt you. It is slowly accepting that someone can love you and still fall short of understanding you completely.

That does not make your pain dramatic. It does not make them monsters either. Sometimes it just means everyone was trying with the emotional tools they had, and some of those tools were not enough.

And I think many people quietly carry guilt for still feeling hurt by parents they know tried their best. But being loved imperfectly can still leave wounds. It makes sense that it affected you.

At the same time, you do not have to stay trapped only in anger forever either. Sometimes healing looks like understanding that your parents were human before they were parents. People shaped by their own experiences, their own upbringing, their own emotional gaps.

That understanding does not erase your feelings. It just softens the sharp edges around them a little.

You deserved emotional safety. You deserved gentleness. You deserved to feel understood, comforted, and emotionally close to the people raising you.

And if they could not fully give that to you, it is okay to mourn it.

But I hope you also know this: the love you needed is still something you can experience in your life. Through other people. Through chosen family. Through the way you learn to treat yourself now.

The story does not end at what you did or did not receive growing up.

You are still allowed softness after all of it 🤍

I think I know how this works.

For personal context, before I went to the '98 Burning Man festival, one of the things I'd read from a couple different journalists was that "everybody" runs around naked. Which, fine by me, I'd already spent a lot of time in clothing-optional spaces, I'm not fanatic about it but it's nice.

So I got there early and set up a public shade structure on one of Black Rock City's main roads and spent most of each afternoon just watching the crowds go by. I don't remember seeing more than one actually naked person the whole week. I think a topless woman passed by my intersection maybe every half an hour, sometimes once an hour. So why in the hell were people, normally pretty smart and observant writers, coming away with the impression that everybody was naked?

Then I remembered an unrelated passage from Joel Garreau's great book about the history of the outer-ring suburbs, Edge City. Mall developers told him flat-out that they tried to keep the crowds in their malls less than 5% black. Not because they themselves were racist, but because they had determined, experimentally, that if more than 5% of the people in the mall are black, the median white shopper will wrongly describe the mall as at least half black, as mostly black. And not a few of them would describe it, at 6% black, as a mall where "only black people go." Why?

Because, emotionally, they were still upset over the last one when the next one came into view.

Same as the journalists describing Black Rock City as all naked. Same as the right-wing religious culture warriors describing television as entirely mixed-race and gender non-conforming. Not because it's even vaguely true, we know that, but because they haven't gotten over their discomfort over the last one by the time the next one comes along. The anger, not the stimulus, is the part that's continuous, so their mind lies to them that it's "all" the thing they can't get over.

we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)

TAZ has two themes that span the entire podcast that r both equally important and cannot exist without each other

Griffin (and co) have talked about the idea of "do good recklessly" and how you should try and do the right thing no matter what, and how sometimes that means breaking rules and taking risks.

I think, however, the theme of "arms outstretched" and what that implies is equally as important. The idea of reaching out and not stopping, trying again and again to save those who might not even want saving. But no matter what you keep on trying to save them.

Merle trying to talk Gundren down despite being physically hurt and Gundren screaming at him to leave him alone.

Tres Horny Bois trying their darndest to stop Sloane from using the Gaia Sash throughout all of PttM, despite knowing at that point that the power of the relics corrupts entirely.

Taako trying to think of a way to save Hurley from the poison and being genuinely angry when he couldn't do anything.

Magnus's repeated attempts to try and save Lucas even after he betrayed the team, doing what he can to save his life because even if Lucas was a shitty person he still is a person worthy of saving.

The boys looping over and over again in refuge and never giving up, even after dying again and again and again.

The infamous "arms outstretched" scene we all know and love.

Merle's never ending attempts to save John and to treat him with a kindness he was not shown in return. Merle taking Arms Outstretched so literally his last choice he made with John was to reach out and try to pull him from The Hunger by wrapping his arms around him in a hug. John's last conscious thought before his humanity was ripped away was that Merle was giving him a hug.

Despite the way she betrayed all of them, Tres Horny Bois reaching out to Lucretia to help her. Because love means you keep trying.

And the final moment. Taako, arm outstretched casting the spell to end The Hunger, Magnus with his hand on his shoulder, Merle at his side, Taako with the immovable rod; "I'm not going fucking anywhere."

Because you can do good recklessly, you can be as good as you want. But it's the act of trying, of never letting yourself stop trying. You have to understand both ideals to really comprehend the characters in that series.
