“And then one night, a week or two after our game in Boston, JJ invited me out. Which was normal, yeah, but do you know what he said to actually get me out the door for once?”
“No,” Rose tells him. “What did he say?”
“He said the cast of The X-Squad movies is here.”
He rolls his eyes, “And do you know who in the cast of The X-Squad movies I wanted to see that night?”
“Miles Allen?” Rose jokes.
“No, not fucking Miles Allen!” Shane groans, repressing a laugh. “Never fucking Miles—no offense.”
Rose bites her lip. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell,” she snickers.
“The person I wanted to see was Rose-fucking-Landry!” he declares even though that’s obvious by now surely—has to be. “Because my life was hockey and part of my life being hockey, meant I had a lot of time to watch movies on airplanes. And do you know who makes really good airplane movies?”
Rose smiles. “Rose Landry?” she guesses.
“Rose Landry,” he agrees. “So, gay or not, if you asked me if I had a celebrity crush in 2016, I would have told you: Rose Landry. Was it rehearsed?” he shrugs, “Maybe.”
“Was it an easy answer when I needed one? Maybe,” he shrugs again. “But I hadn’t thought about that yet. I am not a psychologist. I don’t know how brains work. Maybe I needed a straight crush so I found one. Maybe Canadian Golden Boy and America’s Girl Next Door sounded good. I don’t know. I just know at the time, it was real for me. As real as it was ever gonna be.”
“Sweet,” Rose says and it’s not nearly as sarcastic as he expects it to be.
“It’s the truth,” he tells her and she offers him a slight nod as if to acknowledge that she knows that now, too.
Summary: Newly obsessed with romance, Ilya and Shane’s seven-year-old daughter decides she wants to hear her parents’ love story. Fortunately, Jackie, Hayden, Svetlana, and Rose are all on hand at the cottage to help her parents figure out how to tame it down.
