A PANoramic View On Northeastern

Greetings! My name is Anthony Pan (hence the title of my blog "A. Pan") and I am a 5th year Chemistry major at Northeastern University. I am a local Boston native, born and raised in Allston/Brighton. I am a Husky Ambassador at Northeastern as well as a tour guide. I have participated in student research, 2 co-ops in the local Boston area, studied abroad in Berlin, Germany and just recently finished my last and final co-op internationally in Bremen, Germany. I have many stories to share with you all and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask as I am more than happy to answer them! (05.03.13) Today is Graduation Day! I still cannot believe it. After 5 long years at Northeastern, I finally graduated today with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry! I am forever grateful to all my family, friends, NU staff & faculty for helping, supporting and encouraging me throughout these past 5 years! Without them, today would not be possible. For that, I thank you all!

Graduation was amazing! Our graduation took place at the TD Garden and the arena was amazing! The entire space was filled with families, graduates, staff and faculty. The speeches and events that took place were amazing! Our commencement speaker, Jim Yong Kim, was brilliant and so was his speech. Even President Aoun's speech was brilliant and motivating. When it came time to receive my diploma, that was when reality really struck me. I could not believe that I finally received the diploma that I have been working so hard for, for the past 5 years! I took so many pictures and videos of the ceremony and was super happy to have shared such a special moment in my life with my friends. After graduation, I returned back to campus and took pictures with family and friends. It is bittersweet saying farewell to many of my friends but I am sure that our paths will cross again.

Looking back these past 5 years, I still cannot believe that I have accomplished so much. I still remember that coming into NU as a Freshman, I was a very shy and timid guy. After 5 years, I am outgoing, international and goal-driven in many ways.After 5 years; 3 co-ops (2 domestic & 1 international); 1 study abroad; undergraduate research, leadership roles and being a tour guide for 4 years, I can officially say that I am now an official graduate of Northeastern! Thank you Northeastern for these fun, memorable and amazing 5 years of my life! Congratulations NU's 111th graduating class! Congratulations NU Class of 2013! We did it! We finally did it!

(05.02.13) Tonight, the Chemistry department held a dinner reception for the graduating seniors and our families. It was a great night being able to spend time with our loved ones, fellow graduating seniors, staff and faculty. The food was absolutely delicious! The night consisted of: a slideshow of us, seniors, throughout the 4/5 years; a before (from Freshman year) and after (present day) photo of us; an award ceremony; giving out goodie bags to the seniors; and sharing with everyone something about each graduating senior. It was such a great night and I am super grateful to the Chemistry department and its staff and faculty. Without them, I would not have been able to survive Chemistry. Without them, I would not have been able to accomplish so much throughout my time here. Without them, I would not be the person that I am today. Thank you fellow peers, staff and faculty for all that you have done for me! I did it! I will officially graduate tomorrow with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry! I still cannot believe that 5 years have gone by and after tomorrow, I will officially be a graduate of Northeastern. Just thinking about it is giving me the nerves and butterflies. It will be bittersweet but I am sure that my friends & I will stay in touch no matter where our lives take us next. Off to bed to get some rest before the big day in just a few hours!

I don't mind at all! I'm a communications/media major and I was wondering if you know much about the communications department? Also, because I'm a transfer, what kind of housing options are there? Would I be able to dorm on-campus? Thank you so much!!

Since I am not a Communications/media major, I, unfortunately, do not know much about the department. What I can do is refer you to their main website (see below) and feel free to email and contact the staff & faculty of your interest. They would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in helping you transition to NU. 

In terms of housing for transfer students, they will be placed into upperclassmen housing (apartment-style) on a first-come-first-serve basis. Once you put in your deposit and decide to transfer, you should receive a housing form, which you can fill out and inform housing about your preferences. Please refer to their website (see below) if you have any further housing questions.

(05.01.13) Happy May everyone! I cannot believe that it's May already and in just 2 days, I will be graduating from Northeastern! This semester definitely flew by fast. Yesterday I picked up my graduation cap and gown. Today, I collected all of my academic regalia as well as decorated my graduation cap. My cap is divided into 4 sections, each representing something that matters to me the most: China flag (my heritage a& identity), Chemistry (my major), Husky Ambassadors (student group which I have been a part of for the past 4 years), and Germany (when I spent 9 months in 2012 studying in Berlin and co-oping in Bremen). Graduation will be bittersweet but I am super happy to be spending it with family, friends and fellow colleagues.

(04.29.13) Tonight, my fellows senior friends and I attended an event called, “Grad-itude” to thank senior donors for generously supporting Northeastern in honor of the Class of 2013. The evening included hors d’oeuvres, a champagne toast, and a check presentation from our fellow Senior Gift Committee members.It was a relaxing and fun night with musical performances from our winning-acapella group; speech from President Aoun; fun photobooth; and delicious food! It was a great feeling to know that I was surrounded by people who made their donation to the Senior Gift Drive and believe it or not, our class donated about $24K! I cherished the moment when President Aoun made a toast to our class and we all toasted simultaneously. It was a fun and memorable night. Still cannot believe that I will be graduating in 4 days!

(04.29.13) What a gorgeous and beautiful Monday it is today! As part of Senior Week 2013, there was a 2.13 mile Fun Run around campus where seniors competed in a friendly race. There was also a free BBQ with free food and freebies. My colleague and I got the chance to enjoy the nice weather, the nice music playing in Centennial Commons, the delicious free food and the freebies that we got. Tonight, there will be an event called, "Grad-itude" to thank seniors donors for generously supporting Northeastern in honor of the Class of 2013. (04.28.13) Today was such a beautiful and warm day! Since I am done with classes and am free for the next 5 days, I decided to take advantage of the nice weather and walk around the city. My roommate accompanied me and we walked around campus, the Prudential and the Copley area. We walked through the Boston Marathon memorial in Copley for the first time since the incident and there were many families and visitors visiting the site. We did some window shopping before making our way back to campus. It was such a beautiful day that I was able to capture some neat photos with my camera for memories. I saw that the next few days' weather is superb with high temperatures and sunny skies. This is perfect especially on Friday when Graduation occurs so that I am able to take pictures back on campus after graduation at the TD Garden. I hope everyone is having a fun, relaxing and beautiful Sunday!

I'M DONE!

(04.26.13) It's official-I have finally completed all of my major requirements and all of my assignments for my undergraduate career! I cannot believe that 5 years of college education is over. In just one week, I will be walking at the TD Garden in Boston for graduation and will be an official graduate of Northeastern! At the moment, I really do not know what to feel in terms of emotions but I can definitely say that I absolutely relieved and can finally relax for a change. I will definitely enjoy my last week on campus next week with my friends before graduating next Friday. Next week, seniors will be picking up their cap & gowns along with any academic regalia one may have received. Maybe then the reality of actually graduating will hit me? All I can say is that I am super happy to be finished with my undergraduate career and that I would not have survived these long 5 years without the help and support of my family, friends and NU faculty! Many thanks for everything!

(04.24.13) Who says that only students can visit and apply to Northeastern? Look who we have visiting Northeastern today! With beautiful weather and warm temperatures, families from afar and nearby visited Northeastern today and some of them even brought along their pets. It definitely made my day at work at the Visitor Center being able to pet and be around this cute and adorable puppy.

Speaking of visiting and applying to Northeastern-for those of you who have been admitted to Northeastern-Congratulations! Now it all comes down to whether of not you can see yourself spending the next 4-5 years at Northeastern and whether or not NU is the right fit for you. Keep in mind that the national deposit deadline is next Wednesday (5/1/13)! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! I'd be more than happy to help! (04.22.13) Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is a day to spread awareness about protecting the environment and the Earth which we live on. What did/have you been doing to protect the environment? How are you celebrating Earth Day? Well, in my residence hall, the RA staff came up with the idea of an, "Earth Day Burrito-Recycling Exchange"! Yup, the name says it all: Just bring down any of your recyclables and you can get a free burrito from Bolocco! That is exactly what I did and I got a burrito in return! Recycling is just one of many ways to help preserve the Earth and I always encourage my friends and colleagues to think and act green around campus. Let's celebrate, work together and continue preserving Earth for many years to come!
