[holding a trophy] and finally, I'd like to thank DigiPen's character design class, for teaching me to use a model sheet and match a house style.
One hour speedpaint of my Dystopia Rising character.
very serious collab with Jennell Jaquays. I drew the butt.
Wow, my doodle of the Arvian women really took off, awesome. Oh tumblr, you don't like my Sailor Moon fan art but clothing designs of random NPCs from a comic I haven't even drawn one page of yet? That's what you like? OK, I can work with that.
Anyway, good time for an update!
I just moved into a new apartment and have obtained a new scanner that is absolutely fantastic, way better than my old one. I have a TON of drawings I need to scan and upload and as soon as that happens there will be daily sketches in the queue again. I'm also REALLY close to being able to share some great stuff from work. Soon!!
Uhh here's a screenshot of my very serious ZBrush work.
okay thank
Four women of varying social status from a story I'm working on. Not named characters, just the kind of people you might see in the city, drew them out today to try and get a handle on the setting.
Wave Design, Cafe Demos
This is my process for designing a crashing wave (or a ‘plunging wave’, to be more exact, as opposed to spilling or surging). Stage 1 and Stage 2 represent the gesture, where I map out the general idea and energy of the water.
Stage 3 is the rough color pass with Prismacolor pencils and watercolor pencils.
Stage 4 is the Sharpie pass, so I can graphically separate the foreground and midground, plus punch up the silhouette of the main splash. The overall color seems warmer because of a shift in venue, to another cafe.
Stage 5 is the polish. I’ve taken it into Photoshop to push the saturation just a little, plus increase the contrast of the whites.
My college animation teacher got a tumblr! Everyone go follow him because his work is amazing.
Unsounded came back today. If you aren't reading this comic, you need to be reading this comic.
Once I can grab some spare time I'm gonna take another pass on her hair in ZBrush, I'm not happy with it right now.
Tools used: Zbrush, 3Ds max, Topogun, UV Layout, Photoshop.
Good news: I'm not dead.
Bad news: my scanner is broken.
I've been drawing loads, but I can't post anything until I get a replacement. :( Here's a character I've been working on designing for a personal project. This is the first one where I've felt like I actually hit onto kind of what I want him to look like.
I'm working with PressXY at PAX Prime this year and painted this at the table. This is that design from the dream again.
Process for that Sailor Moon picture. Final is here!
This design literally came to me in a dream, and with Sailor Moon Crystal releasing in like two days, it seemed appropriate.
If you like my art, check out our Kickstarter. If we get funded, I'm doing concept and 3D artwork on the game and there's still a few digital and traditional commission slots open as backer rewards!
For My Brother, cave concepts. The cave stage has sections of dark caverns with luminescent fungus, alternating with caverns lit by sunbeams from the world above. I have two different palettes in place and tried both one separately, and then blended them together to see how a transition between them might look.
Back it on Kickstarter!
My friend made a thing so I did this instead of sleeping. Finally proof that Arinae would, in fact, be pretty if she would just stop making such ugly faces all the time.
Celeste Tainari B with Lifted Geek posted a huge interview with members of Crooked Tree Studios about For My Brother.
Not only is the story intriguing, but the art style is as well. Their art holds a very strong resemblance to the Insular Art style, which is seen a lot during the early Romanization of the British Isles. This is another concept that you don’t see a lot in video games. It seems fitting if not perfect for the 2D side scroller.
After watching the trailer and reading through their kickstarter, I was practically throwing my money at the computer monitor.
I was lucky enough to actually know the artist behind the project, Matt Olch, which allowed Justin Prince as well as myself to get in touch with Katy Levinson; the Business Developer and writer. Through Katy, we were able to ask questions about “For my Brother” and get some more in-depth detail about the developing game that wasn’t covered in their kickstarter.
Read the entire interview at the link!
Here's the first real interview I've ever done! I talk a bit about artistic inspiration and decision-making here, so it's something you might be interested in.
I wanted to draw something besides "For My Brother" stuff so here is a speedpaint of Mouse.
Concept for how Sister might look fully transformed.
Back For My Brother on Kickstarter!
