we actually offer the protest psychosis, the book mentioned, as part of our mad studies study guide for beginners!
[Image Description: Black text on a Pink Background. Transcript:
Title: You're not paranoid if someone's really out to get you.
Subtitle: The racism behind Schizophrenia Diagnoses
Section 1: How racism transformed the Schizophrenia Diagnosis
In the 1950's, the Schizophrenia Diagnosis was mostly given to white housewives. Schizophrenia was associated mostly with withdrawal, catatonia, and depression.
However, during the civil rights movement, psychiatry started committing more Black men in order to deligimatize the movement and its leaders. Many of these men were diagnosed with Schizophrenia.
As a result, Schizophrenia became associated with more "aggressive" symptoms and Schizophrenia became both racialized and gendered towards Black men.
Section 2: The Protest Psychosis.
During this time, Black men who protested racial injustice were said to be suffering from "protest psychosis". Speaking out against racial injustice was thus legitimately considered to be a symptom of mental illness, and potentially contribute to forcible commitment.
Sidenote: Check out "The Protest Psychosis" by Jonation M Metzl for more about this historical shift in psychiatry. Attached is a picture of the book cover.
Section 3: This racialization is part of Psychiatry's design.
Psychiatry diagnoses are written by humans (mostly wealthy cishet white men) and are influenced by human biased, intentionally and unintentionally.
Psychiatry has historically been used as a system of control, policing and eugenics. Diagnoses were written with the motivation of labelling and locking away society's "undesirables", including POC.
Section 4: Subjective Labelling of symptoms leads to racial biases in the MHIC [Mental Health Industry Complex].
It is well known that white people experience conscious and unconscious biases that perceive Black people as "threatening" and "violent".
This means that Black patients are more likely to be perceived as "agressive", which makes them more likely to experience carceral psychiatric practices. It also means they are more likely to be given diagnoses that are considered "serious" such as Schizophrenia, while a White patient with the same symptoms might be diagnosed with something less stigmatized, like Depression.
Section 5: "Delusianal" is defined in a White CisHet Male perspective.
People in power have been telling marginalized people that their experiences aren't real forever. So of course white psychiatrist will label BIPOC experiences as "delusional".
Things that are commonly labeled as "paranoid delusions" include that the CIA is targeting you, bugging of phones, police persecution, etc— all things that really did and still do happen to Black activists.
Section 6: Psychiatric Gaslighting and the enduring legacy of the Protest Psychosis.
Marginalized people continue to be gaslit by psychiatrists who label rational emotional responses to injustice as "delusions" or "chemical imbalances". Labelling these experiences as symptoms invalidates the real lived experiences behind them.
There has been a recent push for more POC workers in mental health care. However, since racism is still systemically written into the fabric of the MHIC, this is not enough to solve the problem.

why stop at just hating pop psychology?
Happy The Missile Knows Where It Is Monday
I don’t know what this post is trying to tell me
the missile knows where it is
it knows this because it knows where it isn’t
the message of this meme is good and all but why is the young person specifically a blushing doomer femboy wojak in a cropped hoodie. what was the decision making process here
it's to make it more relatable
Modern psychology has a word that is probably used more than any other word in psychology. It is the word maladjusted. It is the ring and cry of modern child psychology and certainly we all want to avoid the maladjusted life. We all want to live a well-adjusted life in order to avoid the neurotic and schizophrenic personalities. But I must honestly say there are some things in our nation and the world to which I am proud to be maladjusted and wish all men of goodwill would be maladjusted until the good society is realized. I never intend to adjust myself to segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to a religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few, leaving millions of people smothering in an air-tight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society. I never intend to adjust myself to the madness of militarism and the self-defeating effects of physical violence.

heard about an abolitionist therapist zoom seminar (funny concept) and when one of the presenters said "if you want to do therapy with a police/prison abolitionist mindset you have to be willing to bend and break mandatory reporting law. you have to be willing to risk your license." a bunch of ppl left the zoom call lol. like what did you think they'd say. it's ok to be an arm of state violence as long as you feel bad about it?

the improv impulse is so dangerous. one time a little kid asked me where the friend I was with went (she walked off to grab drinks for us) and, before I could think about why this was a bad idea, I pointed to the river and said "I drowned her" complete with a motion of pushing down someone's shoulders
for whatever reason my next instinct when I realised that sounded insane wasn't to say that I was kidding, but to panic and add that a police officer was watching and told me it was okay
at least there's gay people
and sadomasochism
genuinely for fucking real. my bf is studying psychology i hear horror stories of his classmates saying the most evil and ableist shit possible
ill tell you right now like 90% of the psych students in my uni dont like disabled people at all and do not see them as people, and instead find them to be like interesting specimens to dissect or creeps that they want nothing to do with.
i still remember very vividly this one time i was sitting around about to take an exam, in which the girl beside me said " the terms in psych are so confusing and make no sense. like i thought antisocial personality disorder made you shy, but no it means you're crazy and wanna actually kill everyone. "
