All I saw on my mainstream news app was “GOP holds Senate, GOP governors win in three states, Trump says the midterms were great” and nothing like this.

You probably know that the Democrats decisively won the House of Representatives. Here’s more good news that you’re probably not hearing: Democrats took control from Republicans in New Hampshire, Colorado, Minnesota, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, Illinois, and New York, and now hold the governor’s seat and both chambers of the legislature in the last six of those states.

This is huge for fixing the huge gerrymandering issues at the state level that have enshrined minority rule by the GOP in all U.S. elections from the presidency on down.

Tumblr user ashkenazis (don’t know if he(?) still has that url) bragged about bullying his sister for looking up trans voltron porn and asked their parents to filter her internet. So like, he potentially outed a younger sibling, tried to get her internet restricted (and I’ve never seen a web filter that wasn’t severely punitive; the ones I was subjected to in high school made it so I couldn’t look up articles I needed for school), and said god knows what to her shaming and demonizing her for exploring her sexuality. Again, this kid being subjected to this was 11. She’s going to go years thinking her sexuality makes her a bad person for being interested in teenage characters or perfectly normal kinds of porn. Yeah, ideally an 11-year-old shouldn’t be looking for porn on the internet, because there’s a lot of really graphic or misogynistic stuff out there and there’s no way someone that age could know how to filter it properly, not to mention the risk to creators from her being in those spaces or the risk of a predator getting to her, but 11 is a perfectly normal age to be interested in that kind of stuff. (Honestly, I’m in favor of lowering the age limits for access on some kinds of non-live-action pornography, because realistically, the alternative that happens is teens or even preteens having sex with each other or ending up in chatrooms where predators could get to them. Go for what causes the least harm, and so on. There’d still be penalties for directly giving that stuff to a minor, but there’s a difference between directly sending someone a link or a file and just posting it where the general public can view it. I’d be in favor of turning the “18+ only” button to “13+ only” on some limited categories, because, again, it’s less risky *to teens* than getting into chatrooms or lying about their age.)

When you pass (as cis, as het, as allistic) you are having your identity erased. That is a marginalization, full stop.

That doesn’t mean you don’t have an edge - to be clear, you absolutely have an edge. The net gains may even be greater than the losses; plenty of people prefer passing despite the emotional tax and that is absolutely legit.

But marginalization is still marginalization. It still takes a toll on you. Whether physically (able-passing), mentally (allistic passing), or emotionally (cishet passing), you still have that marginalization. It still hurts.

We need to start recognizing that. We need to make a point of acknowledging that you can be advantaged, without being privileged.

Start calling passing what it is - an advantage, not a privilege.
