Lowkey… Marinat just makes sense in a way the other ships don’t. Mari and Nat have this weird, unspoken dynamic that feels so realistic for two girls trapped in that nightmare together.

Mari’s whole vibe has always been about trying to carve out her own identity, but she doesn’t know how. She’s a teenage girl stuck in a brutal survival situation, constantly shifting her alliances because she’s searching for stability and approval. It’s not that she’s “fake” it’s that she’s terrified. Mari wants to be someone, but the only way she knows how is to mirror whoever’s in charge. (her alligence to jackie at first, then lottie and finally nat) And then you have Nat: fiercely independent, rebellious, unapologetically herself even when she’s falling apart. Mari sees that and it’s like watching someone embody everything she wishes she could be. (I also see this dynamic with shaunanat in the sense that shauna sticks herself to jackie in a way to make herself standout, but I dont think shes attracted to nat, just attracted to her power and ability to lead unlike how she genuinly idolized jackie)

That’s why Marinat hits. Nat’s protective streak toward Mari, especially in Season 3, really stands out. Nat steps into a leadership role and in those tense, power-shifting moments when Lottie’s influence is declining, she’s one of the only people who openly defends Mari. And Mari starts becoming more outspoken when Nat’s leading. That’s huge because Mari’s personality up until then was shaped by fear of standing out, instead she used quips and humor to attach to norms, and suddenly, around Nat, she feels safe enough to be herself.

Compare that to Jackienat or Jackiemari, and Marinat feels so much more layered. Jackie and Nat’s interactions were largely defined by tension and competition (especially over travis and their very different social standings), and Jackie never really understood Nat’s world, I get the argument that jackie wanted to be like nat and not be scrutinized and be able to be not just the ''varsity popular girl". But I think it stops at that, both of them secretly longing to be in eachothers position. JackieMari was more of a “Mari idolizes Jackie because everyone does” thing; Mari wanted to be Jackie because Jackie represented everything that was normal and safe, the world before the crash, she was just one of the people she attatched to in order to survive, where as with nat, yes it started that way but grew into something deeper. But Marinat is different.

Peak culinary school life… woke up sick but still went to my am fish class because my chef docks 12% off everyone’s final grade for every absence. Felt like I was gonna die while standing in the freezing fish kitchen as my chef explains all the crustaceans and caviars before the tasting. Finally finished the tasting and got to leave only to immediately have the fishiest vomit of my life. 10/10 gross factor and the most pungent vomit smell I’ve ever encountered

just cuz shauna is queen, doesn't mean she's worshiped. the thing about jackie being captain was she had "influence" people truly turned to her at the beginning, mari looked to her and was a jackie stan, then as jackie began to fade and lottie began to rise, people truly turned to lottie, they believed in her and what she was saying, and when it became nat, they all kissed her hands and truly thrived under her leadership. where MARI goes is indicative of who's really in charge. mari worshiped jackie, then lottie, then nat, and yet? never shauna. because while shauna was queen, she was never worshiped.

she never got what she wanted, she never got to be queen to overcome her insecurities with jackie. she was in charge, not worshiped. she strong armed her power, and the only person who ever worshiped her was lottie, which …. is fascinating and gay to me but alas - not ONE person truly worshipped shauna, which is what she wanted. so instead of being worshiped? she'd be hated, feared, commanding. it was evidence of her never getting what she wanted and instead forcing herself and her rage onto others which is PEAK shauna shipman. THAT'S what's happening. she's so close to always getting what she wanted. she wanted jackie? she got melissa. she wanted her wilderness baby? she got callie. she wanted to be worshiped? she's fucking feared.

THAT is shauna shipman. THAT is what's going on, and it's fucking delicious.
