I forgot I have to be active here so hereās my Twitter tutorial on how to draw folds I made a while back to help a friend!
Search the world's information, including webpages, images, videos and more. Google has many special features to help you find exactly what
I was helping a friend out earlier but then realized I could also share a few small tips on how to shop for groceries on a budget with u guys too!
Some drawing tips previously posted on twitter. More drawing tips on my patreon. Hope some of these can be helpful.
College Note-Taking System
Having cohesive and effective notes is one of the key skills I think one should have, especially in an academic setting. When youāre receiving a ton of information each day, you want to be able to keep track of that and remember what youāve learned. Iām constantly trying out ways to make my note-taking more effective and tailored to my needs. Hereās what my note-taking system looks like so far.
Quick note: click on the images for better quality!
Class Notes
Taking notes in class is an invaluable way to keep track of the new knowledge youāve gained. However, depending on the mode in which the lecture material is conveyed, I take my notes differently. Hereās a summary of how I take my notes for each type of lecture, as well as some examples from the classes Iām taking now.
Slides (e.g. Macroeconomics)
Macroeconomics is a class in which you should be able to intuitively understand a lot of concepts but also remember a lot of things. Because of this, Iāve tailored my note-taking method and habits to achieve that goal.
I write my notes by hand because handwriting is more effective in committing things to memory.
As for what I actually do - and this is what Iāve done for other classes in which the professor/lecturer uses slides:
Read/skim over the slide.
Read each bullet point as the professor goes through them.
Copy it down if itās straightforward or write it down in a structure and diction that I understand better (not necessarily in my own words - sometimes itās just restructuring, e.g. splitting things up or joining different bullet points together).
Take note of any other important details the professor says about any particular point unless I think itās intuitive or common sense.
Hereās an example from a Macroeconomics lecture.
Oral Presentation (e.g. Anthropology)
During classes in which the professor just speaks and doesnāt use much visual material, I listen before I write instead of attempting to write down every single detail mentioned.
Also, I type up my notes instead of handwriting them since the exams are all open-book so I donāt really have to commit things to memory.
Hereās what I do:
Listen for a cue that tells you what this particular part of the lecture will be about (and write it as a heading).
Write down main ideas and their supporting facts/details. If the facts/details come before the main ideas, then Iād usually draw an arrow.
Write down ideas and details from readings in their own section/subsection.
Sometimes, my professor also shows short clips in class, in which case Iād write down the message that I think the clip was meant to convey, as well as things that the professor points out that I didnāt think of on my own.
Iād also look up concepts/ideas/people/events (in real time) that are important to my understanding of the lecture material.
Hereās an example of a Google Docs document from an Anthropology lecture.
Demonstrations and Sample Problems (e.g. Computer Science)
Classes in which the lecture is mainly going through demos and problems are kind of tricky, because you want to know and understand what the professor is doing, but you also donāt want to be writing down every single step thatās being executed. Hereās what Iāve found to be the most effective so far:
If there are any, I import the slides/handout onto OneNote and annotate directly on the slide. If not, I just write down things like definitions, important concepts, and syntax-related things.
I focus on understanding what the professorās doing with the demo or problem.
I then summarize the steps they took and
Write down comments and points they brought up, e.g. common errors, desirable habits/practices.
Also, these kinds of classes are usually classes in which youād learn better when you actually do problems yourself, so I definitely learn more when I do assignments and labs than when Iām in class.
Hereās an example from a Web Programming lecture.
Hereās one from an Object Oriented Programming and Data Structures class. I often draw things to help me visualize the general points.
Rewritten Notes
My rewritten notes have definitely changed a lot since high school. Since most of my classes donāt require a lot of memorization, I organize my notes in such a way that theyād be easy to index or find information from. Here are some of the ways I do that:
Establishing a Visual Hierarchy
Having a well-defined hierarchy helps me flow through my notes really well as i read them. It helps me organize information like a mind map without actually making a mind map - I know the big topics and their subtopics and sub-subtopics and details ⦠basically itās easier to see how these ideas fit together.
But why donāt I just make mind-maps? See, the thing is, a lot of my notes require sequential or linear thinking, e.g. in macroeconomics it might be the sequence of events following a change in the economy, or in computer science it might be a general algorithm for solving a certain type of problem, or it might be proving or deriving a certain equation. These sorts of things just generally donāt work well with mind maps. Instead, establishing a visual hierarchy in my notes helps me organize different ideas while retaining the linear nature of the information.
Hereās what the hierarchy looks like.
Here is an example from my Web Programming class, which is a purely project-based class, so no prelims or exams. As you can see, I draw rectangles around important terminology so that I can easily find them while Iām working on a project. I also include examples from in-class activities as well as notes on syntax so I have an idea of how to implement certain things. These examples and notes are further grouped by terminology/concept.
Structuring Them for Easier Flow
My syllabi for my college courses are nowhere near as detailed as the syllabi for my high school courses - those of you who take/have taken Cambridge exams would know. In college, my syllabi are only lists of topics and not what youāre expected to know for each topic. Because of this, I have to find a way to arrange information so that I can achieve the most comprehensive and cohesive understanding of that topic, i.e. so that the flow of my notes is similar to the flow of my thinking.
For example, in my economics notebook, I like to have the details first (e.g. the separate markets: the goods market, the assets market, and the labor market) and then the big picture later (IS-LM-FE). Some people prefer the other way around - seeing the big picture and then going into the details - which I can understand and have done myself for certain topics.
Making Use of Proximity and Spacing
I very much dislike notes without good use of spacing and grouping things together. Keeping related ideas in visual proximity helps your brain (or at least mine) organize this information. Itās also a lot easier to find things and visualize your notes when theyāre not just a huge chunk of text.
One thing I should probably mention is that I donāt use colored pens anymore because it just takes a lot of time to switch pens and think of a color palette. I also donāt have much use for it. In the past, I used color to help me memorize and group things in different categories, but now, Iāve found that there arenāt a whole lot of categories I need to keep track of, and when I do, I can do so with just one pen but changing the style of the text.
And thatās what my note-taking system currently looks like. Itās working well so far, but I still think there are other things I could try out that might be a better fit.
So yeah, hope this was helpful, and as always, feel free to drop an ask if you have any questions, or even if you have any suggestions or would like to share your note-taking system. Have an awesome week!
heres a skintone pallete!!! feel free to rb/use it!!!
left to right = light to dark top to bottom = warm to cool
JUST SOME THOUGHTS! I donāt really like the āgo from the top upā advice on drapery/clothes - if youāre having difficulty try it like this!
YES I see the typo⦠Iām so sorry folks⦠I was in a frenzied rush to make thisā¦ā¦ and Iām too lazy to fix itā¦ā¦

When you guys have visited potential apartments, what kind of questions did you ask besides the basics like what rent and utilities include?
Here are questions I didnāt ask but should have: what does the basement look like?
What measures are taken to secure the building ?
Are the walls thin? Brief info of who lives in the building. Are they college kids? People that work through the day? Elderly? Is it a mix? Where does the garbage go?
Can I pay rent bi-weekly? What kind of fuses does the apartment use? (My fuse box is in the basement. If I blow a fuse I have to replace it myself. They screw until the box. All of which I didnāt know until it happend and I was sitting in the dark suddenly)
Who do I call for repairs? (If itās a private rental) Am I allowed to paint the walls? Is there any additional storage? Do you do regular pest control?
LAUNDRY FACILITIES Definitely ask about security Whether subletting is allowed (esp if youāre in college and might want to sublet for the summer) If you have a car, whether thereās parking/how much it costs What kind of heating/AC there is Procedure/response time for any maintenance How mail/packages are received/protected from theft (seriously people stealing your packages can be a huge problem) What kind of verification of your salary will they want, and in what circumstances will they accept a guarantor instead? Whether the apartment is furnished
Assuming you are in the middle of looking at/choosing between places: When does the lease start? Are you going to give preference to people based on when they can move in? Whether groups of a certain number of people get preference Really anything about who they prioritize for applications, it can save you a lot of trouble in trying to apply to places youāll never get into
count the outlets, ask about recycling policies, ask if thereās a noise restriction (nothing loud after midnight, everything goes on the weekend, etc)
What are the upfront fees for moving in? (1 month, brokers, 1 month security fee?)
Is there a credit check fee? (shouldnāt be over $25. shouldnāt even exist really but credit check fees at $125, 150? robbery)
Ask about the intercom system, ask about security cameras, ask about the locks on the front door. One place I looked at, the building was locked, and the broker jimmied the front door open with his business card. If the broker could do it, so could a rapist
Is there a live-in super? (godsends, heroes) If so ask to meet them. A lazy, ignorant, or uncaring super is a nightmare waiting to happen. An active, interested, proud one is excellent, even better if theyāre union
How do I pay my rent? (Check, money order?) Can I pay online? (If check/money order mailed in is the only way, make sure to get receipts for sending the rent out every month!! Critical!! Keep your proof of payments made on time every time in case they get on some foul shit. Landlords are outĀ here to screw you and make money)
When does the lease renew? Can I negotiate a two-year option at a reduced monthly rate? Can I get $50, $100, $200 off the rent? (it doesnāt hurt to ask!!) Does the rent go up significantly after a year, two years? (Places withĀ āintroductory rentsā or rent deals may do this to you⦠you may not be able to afford that apt once it goes up to its regular price!)
Is this apt rent-controlled or rent-stabilized? (NYC thing, godsend)
Have there ever been bed bugs in this apartment/in this building? (at least in nyc they are legally obligated to disclose this to you i believe)
What documents do they REALLY NEED for the application? (lots of places will want a former landlord recommendation letter⦠lots of places will also just let that shit slide if you have most of your packet together)
When is the apt available for moving in? Can I start the move-in process earlier than my lease start date? If so, will prorated rent be added onto my bill or no? (some places will nickel and dime you with that shit)
not something for asking the realtors, necessarily, but important rights you should be aware of as a tenant:
when and for what reasons are your landlords allowed to enter your home? how much of a notice should they give you before entering?
can the landlord make modifications to your home or apartment without your approval? to what extent?
what are the options and conditions for breaking your lease early if thereās an emergency? (this is ESPECIALLY important for anyone moving to a new state/considerable distance where you are not able to visit the apartment/home before you rent ā students get taken advantage of ALL THE TIME with this shit)
if your first or last month at the property is a partial stay (i.e. you move in on july 15th, and rent is typically due on the first) make sure you donāt pay the full first monthās rent before you know the area laws! in many states, you are only legally required to pay for the time you are occupying the property
is renterās insurance necessary? many apartments want at least 30k coverage, which can run a couple hundred dollars extra per year
are the landlords/property management liable for crimes on the property? for example, if your car was broken into. if not GET RENTERāS INSURANCE
-ask if thereās any property upkeep you can do to get a bit off the rent (aka, can they take 100$ off the monthly rent if you maintain the lawns/garden, etc.)Ā
-ask if thereās been any consistent/frequent trouble with electricity/internet connectivity/cable if you have it
-what KIND of electricity?Ā
-what kind of heating (hot water/electric)
-how secure is the neighborhood (if you donāt know)Ā
-ANY PLUMBING ISSUES? check ALL the fucking taps, the showers, EVERYTHING WITH WATER to make sure it all works right.Ā
Probably already covered in the heating aspect but - check the windows/window frames. Iāve now lived in two separate places that have had wooden frames - one with single pane windows and the other the frames had warped so much that in two rooms there was a considerable gap between the window and the frame when the window was āshutā
Landlord access (if itās not a live in landlord) is a biggie - Iāve been hit by this before and have heard of worse cases too. Make sure you hold them accountable to what they put in the contract.
And talking of contracts - do not sign anything without reading it thoroughly, twice. I repeat - DO. NOT. SIGN. ANYTHING. WITHOUT. READING. IT. TWICE. And if you donāt understand something or agree with it, bring it up BEFORE you sign. My mother instilled that in me when I was a kid and it stuck. Luckily, as my second landlord tried to rush me through some dodgy paperwork onceā¦
Before you move in, try to really inspect the place for things that need fixing or repairing or repainting (because even though they may have fixed up the place, they may not have done it well). If you see anything wrong tell the landlord right away but also make sure to take photos of it and document it just in case the landlord never has it fixed or they never fix it properly. So when itās time for you to move out, you can show that the damage was already there when you moved in and shouldnāt be taken out of your deposit. Because they will look for any little thing that will allow them to dock from your deposit.
@commandingofficers
This is amazing thanks y'all
TAKE YOUR PHONE OUT AND CHECK YOU HAVE RECEPTION!!!!
See if you can ask your neighbours about the internet available in the building.
yo can I drop some advice all you kids trying to get entry level jobs need to learn? I learned it the hard way and now I shall impart that to you.
when you see this shit, that goes āyou need like 10 years experience and all this other qualifications nobody with all that would ever apply for a job like this withā, that means one thing: they are weeding out people who donāt believe they can achieve that level. They go āsigh, I canāt even compete, fuck it.ā and donāt apply, saving the company the trouble.
What you, as a fresh new student, need to do- is apply anyway with a Luffy-like optimism that you will get that fucking job!! You donāt have a million years experience BUT YOUāLL TRY AND NEVER GIVE UP ETC. You write an opener letter with that in it, submit your shit, and get that goddamn job because they just found somebody whoās willing to give it a try anyway, who has the confidence and the ability to play with the big boys and they will train you to become a master because fresh meat is vital to the industry.Ā
tldr: APPLY ANYWAY, YOUNG GRASSHOPPER
i really wish iād read this three months ago
to those who are still looking for their first job: it wouldnāt hurt to try. the worst thing that can happen is that you get a ānoā
So, really interesting statistic that just came up in hiring diversity training at work: women will typically only apply to a position if they feel they meet 100% of the requirements. Ā Men will typically apply if they feel they meet just 60%.
And guess what? Ā They still get hired, because a lot of job descriptions are total garbage. Ā These arenāt crafted masterpieces handed down from the divine goddess of Human Resources. Ā These are things that were thrown together at the last minute 3 years ago by some manager with too many more important things to do, and theyāve been used untouched ever since.
Think about this, and think about those numbers, ladies. Ā Think long and hard about this statistic next time you are looking at a job description and telling yourself that you canāt cut it. Ā You probably can, and applying is free.
(P.S.: Iām happy to give resume advice to people - especially new college grads in the tech industry. Ā Thatās the field I know and do interviews in; Iām not sure if my advice would be as applicable elsewhere.)
oh hey new guide thinggg~ some basics on how to practice! thereās SO much I could add to this, so itās just the basics :O
short (kind of): thereās more to practice than doing something repeatedly, itās also learning new things, problem solving, and honest critique. Each of those is its own skillā¦also be nice to yourself!
You know a trope that makes me SO mad???
Expendable. Guards.Ā
This is just stupid. This is just lazy storytelling. Itās so ingrained in us that we hardly ever notice. It goes like this:Ā
Heās the Hero. Sheās the Heroin. Theyāre a team! Theyāre the good guys! Even after all the villain has done, they hesitate killing them! Because theyāre so good!!!Ā
Except they killed like 16 guards on the way there.Ā
If you notice on cartoons and series, guards often have helmets to hide their faces. Theyāre depersonified so itās okay when they get killed off. The most competent one is always the leader and it has a completely different look from the rest.
Sometimes, it doesnāt even make sense for them to be there. Sometimes the villain is just playing decoy, sometimes the villain is very much capable of handling themselves.Ā
Also, when was the last time guards actually caught the heroes except when they were hurt or when they meant to be captured? Donāt the villains hire strong or skilled people? Donāt the villains train the guards themselves or hire people for the training? What would you need to become a guard? Is it different than becoming a goon?Ā
How to change it up?Ā
Remember the ThanosĀ āI donāt even know who you areā line? That hurt, right? Have a character that is the child or the spouse of a guard that you killed off in a line. Theyāre seeking revenge, their life is ruined. But the hero doesnāt even remember doing it⦠Have the heroes face the consequences of their actions!!!
Have competent guards. Theyāre called security for a reason. Allow them to do their job and secure the place.Ā
If your character has killing scruples, carry that through, be consistent. Have they have scruples all along.Ā
Undo the Damage of Sitting
(Technically, this isnāt about saving your hands⦠but if you draw, youāre probably doing a lot of sitting, soā¦)
Srsly tho as a writer and illustrator- these exercises are just as important as your hand ones and will save you. So much pain.
I donāt really know what people generally call this method of sigil making, so Iām just calling it āLetter Shapingā because youāre using the basic shapes from certain letters. This is the most common form of sigil making, and it allows the most creative influence. As you see above the sigils are for nearly the same thing, yet the sigils came out completely different. Not because the purpose was different, but because I approached them both a different creativeĀ way, and thatās what I like so much about this method. Thereās a lot of freedom and personalization involved.
(UPDATE: Hereās a link to a guide on how to deconstruct letters down to basic shapes)
@egyptian-pearl-witch
My super dumb meme jokes aside though, this is actually really cool
Give me female characters who are cold and ruthless. Who are angry and vicious. Who will do whatever it takes.
Give me female characters who are deeply flawed. Who are all sharp edges and mean words. Who love deeply but donāt know how to show it.
Give me female characters who walk the battlefield the way they would a runway. Who wield swords and magic. Who fight the wars along side men.
Give me female characters who weaponize their sexuality. Who use it to get what they want. Who are secure with who they are.
Give me female characters who are beloved for the same traits that male characters are worshipped for.
Tips for fight scenes
If you get punched in the nose your eyes will water, a lot, even if it didnāt really hurt
Your body follows your head, your head gets pushed one way and your body will want to go that way
Getting hit in the stomach isnāt good, it hurts, getting hit in the diaphragm is worse. Causes your lungs to kinda spasm and make it hard to breathe (diaphragm is between stomach and chest)
When fighting a larger person they will have an easier time forcing you back
The jaw is the knockout button. Hit it hard enough and down for the count
Back of the head is very vulnerable, can cause serious damage if hit there
Kidney punches. They hurt. A lot.
People with experience will try to be where they are comfortable. A wrestler will try to get their opponent on the ground, a boxer will stay on their feet, etc.
Easiest counter to a kick is to get closer to whoever is throwing it, then they wonāt have enough room for it to be effective
If you want realism, avoid fancy, flashy moves. Theyāre less practical and easier to counter.
