Oh huh! I hadn't realized I didn't post this one here on Tumblr! I finished this study in early March and have plans to have it be one of 3 pieces to go together 🙂‍↕️

My take on the Sherlock Holmes books

Am so wrong footed these days. So embarrassed.

I know, and John doesn’t. I’ll burst with it, soon I think.

I know, and she doesn’t. I know. And she doesn’t know.

Perhaps she’d say there’s nothing to know. How can there be nothing to know? That can’t be right. She sits so near me on the sofa. Crowds me, really. I say crowds. As if I mind. She takes my arm. Sometimes my hand. She has kissed me ten more times since that first time, only a week and a half ago. As if something’s come uncorked in her, and she can’t stop herself anymore. A storm of kisses, rushing through John Watson, as my music courses through me.

Mates don’t long to kiss each other, John. Kiss good night is not ordinary flatmate behaviour. So I might say. This isn’t the sort of thing it’s my prerogative to notice. What’s the difference between friends and lovers, anyway? Stupid question. It isn’t my imagination! I know the difference between friends and lovers. There is an agonising fucking universe between friends and lovers.

It shouldn’t be agonising. We should have time. Once she kissed my hand, and it was so sweet, it made my chest ache. I could be nourished enough for the time being on such delicate unfurlings. Why would I try and pick fruit when the blossoms are only just bursting into bloom? Why would I race past spring for summer? I love these intermediacies with John. I should love them. I would love them. But they don’t mean what they should mean. They don’t mean what they did mean.

Martin doesn’t need the spring. He doesn’t need unfurlings and tender hand kisses and gentle revelations. He has his script laid out for him, and John already knows just what part she is meant to play.

She loves me. It won’t be enough.

One of the finest and most beloved Watsons ever to grace the screen has passed away. David Burke was 91 years old, just shy of his 92nd birthday, and he is survived by his wife Anna Calder-Marshall and his son Tom Burke.

By all accounts, he was a gentleman and a wonderful human being. He could have stayed on to play Watson much longer, which would have made many of us very happy, but he chose to leave the show to be nearer to his family, especially since Tom was very young at the time.

His was not the first intelligent and competent Watson, but this version marked a turning point in mainstream depictions, from comedic sidekick to a hero in his own right.

RIP, dear sir. You will be missed. Thank you for everything.

For the past decade old men yaoi was a pejorative against bbc johnlockers bc they were wrinkly old men but now that all the basement dwelling puritans on this website got jobs and started having homotrans sex and going to therapy and realized that not everything in gay media fandom has to be a botoxed shame spiral they explicitly reclaimed "old men yaoi" BUT now it's everything except bbc johnlock. Half finished ACD sketches, one of them a little comic project that has to do with the list Watson writes at the start of their companionship. I’ve always enjoyed the coziness with which the apartment is fondly described and portrayed in both books and movies, so this is a small tribute to domesticity and couches, I suppose.

The Boscombe Valley Mystery

the thing about irene adler is like yeah yeah one million posts about how holmes isn't interested in her & vice versa etc etc this is absolutely true. but another significant thing about her character To Me is that she is a crossdresser, and not just for this particular story but like she states she frequently crossdresses & passes as a man in public just for fun. she says in her note to holmes "Male costume is nothing new to me. I often take advantage of the freedom which it gives. I sent John, the coachman, to watch you, ran up stairs, got into my walking-clothes, as I call them, and came down just you departed." she is also a contralto opera singer which as I understand it particularly in the 19th century means she almost definitely would have been playing breeches roles. and it's true that she usually appears in daily life as a beautiful woman and this is particularly played up through holmes & watson's very narrow & assumptive view of her but as I've said elsewhere it is specifically through her ability/habit of being gender nonconforming that she fools holmes for the second time. so like this is also an meaningful part of her character! and it's another thing that always annoys me adaptionally when this gets forgotten. anyways the only valid & true additions by adaptions are 1) granada holmes (has a scene of her dressed up as a man at a gentleman's club with the king) and 2) that bbc audio drama (has a scene where she proposes going walking with the king dressed as a man & we get "kiss me. well? what are you waiting for?" "I want to remember this moment, I never kissed a man before")

also okay maybe a little problematic but I do really enjoy leaning into the gender aspect of why the king is anxious about getting the letters & photographs back. like not just because she's an unsuitable woman in the sense that she was an opera singer & because their relationship may have been a little risque but also that he is becoming king & getting married & trying to fit into this spotless patriarchal public figure role & is afraid of this sort of. well not strictly queer but not entirely gender conforming or heterosexually respectable situation from his past (if she passes so easily as a man. has he been in situations with her where she has been doing so?). and like. well. we never are told what exactly is in those photos !

You know, between all of the above and the fact that the story opens by explicitly stating that Holmes is not into women—you can interpret him as asexual or gay, as you like, but he is expressly and canonically queer—and follows that up by mentioning that "Holmes... loathed every form of society with his whole Bohemian soul"... the title A Scandal in Bohemia is a double entendre, isn't it? One of the principal figures is literally Bohemian and the other two are figuratively so (and this is plot-relevant).
