very fitting that the crew members who were prepared to die were metaphorically dead from the very beginning and, inevitably, literally dead from the beginning. they had gone into their comas, anticipating their premature deaths, and accepting that they would not survive. meanwhile grace had never agreed to die. he had not been dead from the beginning. he was not accepting of it and he refused it. and he was the one who held onto life in spite of the many risks throughout the mission. which, again, is rather fitting for the sole person dedicated to saving the planet. him and the earth are parallels, fighting to stay alive and to hold onto what they have left. him fighting to stay on earth and refusing a suicide mission is deeply entwined with earth's desperation to live, rather than just being a thing of contradiction. they both just want to survive, even if it kills the other. and that makes him all the better to understand and believe in the world he wants to protect.
For a city to be walkable. It must also be sittable.
#every time I read this phrase the same thing happens#I read it as shittable and go wait that can't be right#oh right they were talking about public benches that makes more sense#but public bathrooms available without fees should also be a thing tho#cities should definitely be shittable#it happens EVERY SINGLE TIME
it must also be shittable
I think what I love most about mythology is that the “Trickster God/Spirit” is an archetypical character found in almost every body of folklore. It’s like “Oh, here’s our God of the Sun, our God of the Sea, our God of Fertility, and our God of Being A Wretched Little Gremlin Who Causes Problems On Purpose”
i think there is a difference between a knowingly flawed character and a thematically uncomfortable character and knowing the difference is half the battle
knowingly flawed character: this character has traits that the author deliberately put in to show they have nuance and aren't perfect as a person. this will put them at odds with some readers and endear them to others, depending on them as people, and that's good!
thematically uncomfortable character: oh boy the author has some Beliefs
you have to spend a week in the last series you watched how is it going

Having a lot of feelings about Ryland “you don’t even have a dog” Grace to beloved Uncle Grace pipeline.
"The magic system is never fully explained" yeah that's how life works. Imagine having a story set in modern day America and the characters have several pages of exposition on combustion engines and telecommunication networks before we get to the plot
i think this is absolutely correct and good writing advice but also victor hugo would like to have a word with you about the parisian sewer system circa 1832

I like to think that once Earth receives the beetles and fixes the sun, they then send another beetle to Erid full of seeds, food, spices, and other care package stuff for Grace.
At that point, they won't know he's still alive, as far as they know, he probably starved to death by then. But Stratt insists they send it anyway. If nothing else, it can be a gift for their newly discovered neighbors, the Eridians. Afterall, what's more friendly than sharing food?
The Eridian scientists study the contents of the care package. It's full of shelf-stable human food that they do their best to clone/replicate for Grace. There are also some seeds that store well for the years of travel they experienced. Radish, lettuce, tomato, beans, etc. (Potatoes would be a great callback to "The Martian")
The Eridians are absolutely delighted to observe Grace grow a little garden of Earth plants. Rocky, Adrian, and any of their kids big enough to fit in xenonite EVA suits help him pollinate plants with little paintbrush-like tools. Grace keeps a few plants in pots so he can easily move them around and show them to his students.
Rocky's POV
I know we're all sort of picturing Rocky just hanging out fully depressed with 22 dead crewmates for 40+ years but I need you all to imagine, just for a second, Rocky holding 22 heart-wrenching space burials and then having the greatest post-burial crashout mirroring Ryland's vodka party. He was probably starfishing on the ground for 2 weeks straight, singing to himself before he got a grip again. I need more headcanons about Rocky doing stupid shit to cope with his grief. Movie!Ryland got to dance with a broom. Fandom, work your magic.
