UGGHHHH i get so mad when people say gai should have died. and i am biased for many reasons but i don't care. it's dumb. i see so many people flat out saying he's better off dead than in a wheelchair because he's "basically useless" you should be hunted for sport
the madara fight is not unsatisfying because gai survives. if he died, everyone would be saying "wow so he died for nothing" like they do with neji. you do not have a problem with whether or not gai survives, you have a problem with the fact there's no consequences for madara! he just gets up and walks all that off! effectively the fight means nothing (NOT that i don't absolutely love it, but within the greater context i think it falls flat) and that is not because gai survives. that is because no naruto side character is ever allowed to have a significant impact on the plot progression. naruto shows up and it's like gai and madara never even fought, it's just to get gai, lee and gaara out of the way for the Main Character to save the day
i think gai surviving is the MOST interesting outcome for his character, personally, but even if you disagree i refuse to accept that him dying would have worked better. you see how that went with neji! the problem is not the character's survival! what most people have a problem with is that he is a disabled man and therefore his survival has no value to them. a wheelchair means there was no point in surviving, despite him going on to live a happy and fulfilling life afterwards. the way some of you talk about these things makes your real life views extremely clear
it is so confusing to me when i hear the sentiment that gai should be dead. i've even seen people go so far as to say that him dying would've been cooler than his life going downward(? decreasing in value / worth / etc), from having to live as an "invalid." it's so medieval, i dont understand how people can so transparently display THIS level of apathy/ hostility to even the idea of disabled people. what do they think happens after war? everyone dusts off their pants and goes home, and everyone else dies, with nothing in between 💀?
i agree that the lack of payoff is what makes- honestly- most of the themes explored in that arc disappointing/ unsatisfying. it feels like every fight before naruto comes in is just power scaling? showing you how cool and strong madara is, just so that you can see how much cooler and stronger naruto and sasuke are by comparison. it's so childish, and tbh more characters dying would have only pushed that absurdity
gai dying would have proved nothing. it wouldve been narratively stale and boring, and worst of all it would destroy any potential arc for gai?? what would the point be in validating his misguided vows, and killing him along with his student? no one stands to learn anything from this, it would be more vapid annoying "war + dying = cool" chatter that naruto is already full to the brim of. and it wouldnt even fulfill that point because most of these people think gai is lame to begin with, it would have just solidified that point to them, especially with kakashi and his entire team surviving.
i have more to say but im getting rambling so im stopping myself😭
These needed to come out of the tags!
Another thing people miss with Gai's character arc. Gai wanted to die. He spent his whole life wanting to go out in a blaze of glory like his father. To prove that his father's Hachimon were powerful, that his father was capable. To give his father the respect the village never gave Dai after his sacrifice ( this was the take that Tumblr introduced to me, since the story glosses over the fact that Dai was not remembered as a hero).
Gai has been passively suicidal since he was 11 ( or however old he was when his father died). His entire fighting style revolves around dying. He sees his life as expendable, it's part of why he makes That Suicide Pack with Lee-kun in part 1. ( Has anyone thought about how Kakashi would react if he were there? The slap heard around Konaha. ).
Gai has been training to the max since age 5. Kakashi had around 8 years while he was the son of a hero, but Gai's entire childhood was marked by bitterness that people made fun of his father. Driven by training himself to the bone as a tiny child. He's never shown playing or doing anything fun- the scenes with Kakashi , Obito, and Rin playing as kids?? Gai isn't there.
When we see Gai and Kakashi as 10-15 year old- notice how wiry and thing Gai is compared to Kakashi. He was burning the fat off of his body, and it's def not that he doesn't eat well ( I consider the ANBU arc canon, so my boy def ate lots of dango). His face is strangely lean, it's not soft at all.
Losing his foot and being a wheelchair user after the war is the only way Gai ever got permission to retire. It's the only thing that gave him permission outside of being the perfect tool for the village, outside of being a weapon. He would not have given himself permission to retire otherwise.
Gai ending up in a wheelchair is the best thing that could have happened to him. He would have worked himself to death otherwise. He showed the world the power of the Hachimon, was the declared the strongest in Taujutsu ( therefore validating his dad) and now is forced to live with an identity as a person outside of being a shinobi. Death was the easy way out.
Also @eastbluecrewed The idea of ' i just know you apply this thinking to real life' is a thing for me as well! Certain fiction analysis traits ENRAGE me because they show the perspective the person has IRL.
YESSS EXACTLYY! i hate the idea that a suicidal character dying is ever a good thing! that's a terrible precedent to set! just like @guyicide said it's just more of the borderline pro-war/suicide sentiment and i hate that. forcing him to live (and live safely, considering exactly what you said about him having to retire) is not only the best choice for his story but also actually fits the themes of what naruto is supposed to be about in a way most of the war arc doesn't lol
i really dislike the idea that being disabled is somehow like, a punishment for gai surviving. he just lost his foot! it happens! HE may think of it that way initially (because konoha has issues and i'm sure systemic ableism is one of them, you ever seen a wheelchair ramp there?) but that makes sense from his perspective of someone having to rethink his entire life. WE know it leads him to a better, kinder future, so there's only one reason someone might still think his life is a waste: they don't view a disabled life as one worth living. if someone said that shit to ME i am starting a fist fight and ykw he should too
also i hadn't really thought about what gai's ABSENCE in scenes from their childhood implies, i'm clutching my chest. that poor baby he should've been playing toys LET HIM HAVE A HAPPY RETIREMENT!
The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg currently has a limited time exhibition on the origins of carneval, including the origins and meaning of the "ship of fools". Of course I was immediately reminded of pentiment and I'm suddenly realising just how many implications the choice to have Andreas take the ship of fools back to the waking world has.
Traditionally the ship of fools is trying to reach "Narragonien", the land of fools, a fantasy. It is also a play on the ship as a Christian symbol, which safely leads believers to heaven through the sea of trials of worldly life.
But we don't see Andreas taking the ship of fools INTO the dream, INTO the fantasy in detail - the scene on the ship is supposed to take him OUT of it. Is this foreshadowing of Andreas (arguably) foolish decision to involve himself in the investigation that ultimately dooms him? Is it a sign of the trouble and crisis to come? Is it foreshadowing Andreas' stay in the monastery, supposedly a place of believers, like the ship of god, but doomed in the end?
As it is the introduction to the game the ship is of course also transporting you, the player, into the world of the game. Andreas' dream as a liminal place, you are not yet fully the character, not yet fully in the game, then you, the player, take the ship of fools and become Andreas in his world, like a fool masquerading as someone other than himself during carnival. And then, perhaps, also a commentary on the process of trying to depict a real historical world in a videogame, in a way modern audiences would understand, using an invented place and invented people (-> Narragonien) to lure you along on a journey that, while you will never reach that place, will leave your understanding of the world changed.

People really skip over the tragedy of Maito Gai's childhood
Kakashi is established as the resident tragic character, with a tragic backstory hinted at throughout part I. Then it's revealed his father committed suicide when he was a boy, and he likely never knew his mother, since she died before she turned 30.
But we all gloss over Gai. Maybe you can argue the Missing Mother in his case was a bit of a last minute " forced parallel" between him and Kakashi. But I think it adds tragedy to the otherwise happy and well adjusted appearing character. He never knew his mom? That's so sad.
But this scene. Where Dai is about to sacrifice himself. The shock and horror on Gai's face. Yes, Dai laid down his life to protect his son, fulfilling his duty as a parent, in a way, it's the opposite of what Sakumo did ( end his life by his own hand, leaving Kakashi alone for no reason). But look at how horrified Gai is here. It's hard to imagine this sad little boy becoming the Gai we know in the series. Having to run away, leaving your dad's corpse in the woods. Horrifying.
The way he says " Doushite koko ni iru?" ("Why are you here" after he says " Father , you're a genin." ) It just. Hurts me.
I also head-canon that Kakashi helped him recover ( emotionally) from his dad's death, having been orphaned long before him.
