@kakashi-fan1996
"Hiashi only agreed to train Neji after seeing how strong he was!"
??????
I'm sorry. "Agreed" ?! To ? Train Neji!?
Do we not see this:
Do we not see the Dogeza (土下座)? Do we not see that Neji held all the emotional cards? Do we not see that Hiashi didn't expect to be forgiven? Do we not see the humility? Such a deep bow is social suicide!
Neji didn't need to be trained by his uncle. He literally mastered the Kaiten through observation alone. Even Hiashi was shocked. He was progressing just fine without being formally trained by the Main House.
Neji was not a threat to the hierarchy. Firstly, the Curse Seal makes it so he could not have been a physical threat. Ideologically? He was just one Branch Member. He represented what the Branch House had been feeling for years. It wasn't anything new.
If you actually pay attention to the Naruto world ( which I know that most Hiashi haters are not, but I digress), you'll see that training often serves as a form of bonding between Shinobi. It's not just about learning new skills. Hiashi wasn't training Neji was Neji's benefit. Neji was allowing his Uncle near him without bristling for the first time in a decade. It was Neji humoring Hiashi, not the other way around.
However, Neji training Hinata was a mix of both. Hinata actually did benefit from it.
Hiashi Haters Double Standard
People see this scene, where Hiashi is begging to not allow Hizashi to die in his place. The one where he is a Shinobi who is not allowed to choose his own death ,which, in the Naruto world, represents a complete lack of agency, as one of the few dignities shinobi are allowed is choosing their own death. Although, understanding this would expect Hiashi haters to actually understand the Naruto world... I digress. The scene where he has the least agency in the room.
And they don't take it as an example of "Show, don't tell." That if this is the only time we see Hiashi make a decision in canon, and he has the least power in the room, is overruled by the elders, and his own beloved twin knocks him out to force him to comply with his own sacrifice. We are meant to apply this as a general principle: Hiashi being the powerful clan head is just a facade, he doesn't actually get to make the decisions. He literally wasn't allowed to make the most important one.
But, Hiashi haters say " No see this is only one time we see the Elders breathing down his neck and stopping him from making the decision he wants and robbing him of his agency we can't say this happened every time. "
Okay.
Now let's move onto the seal activation scene.
We see Hiashi activate Hizashi's seal as a desperate reaction to Hizashi's palpable Sakki towards Hinata. A moment Hizashi himself doesn't hold against him ( "I've only shown Neji my ugly side.") . A moment the War Arc proves was necessary ( Hizashi is shown to be neck-to-neck with his twin, despite lacking Head Family Jutsu and having been dead for over a decade while Hiashi was alive further honing his abilities).
Hiashi haters see this and immediately assume that Hiashi regularly activated his brothers' seal, that Hiashi regularly humiliated his brother, that Hizashi was "on a short leash." From one scene that the lore clearly established as necessary, somehow they're able to generalize and apply things. Never mind that Hizashi's own words and actions prove that he knew he was deeply and completely loved by his twin, that he loved Hiashi, that he knew he was forced to be a "cold clan head." None of that matters. Hiashi activated his brother's seal once, clearly he's a monster~!!!
Anyway. It's annoying that Hiashi haters don't understand storytelling.
I like to headcanon that Hizashi and Hiashi are somewhat reflected in Hinata and Hannabi. So, Hizashi was the socially savvy, witty, and talented sibling, while Hiashi was reserved, quiet, shy, and not as talented ( the War Arc pretty much states outright that Hizashi was the more talented).
How about while Hizashi was alive...he serves as Hiashi's social translator. He was the one who helped him figure out what to say in front of the Elders, gave him subtle hints during meetings or had pep talks with him beforehand. Helped him when he was anxious. Saw the real Hiashi behind closed doors, the one who isn't aggressive or bullish at all.
Raised as a Lonely Royal, Hiashi would have had limited social skills ( think Azula from Avatar the Last Airbender). What if Hizashi helped Hiashi out, socially , too?
And when Hizashi died, Hiashi lost his other half, his only peer, the only person who saw him as Hiashi and not Lord Hiashi. And. His social translator.
Hyuga Hiashi didn't love power. He loved his twin brother. Who was sacrificed to maintain the clan's power. Making him the cold, bitter, power-hungry clan head we see in Naruto.
Even the way he says " The Hyuga are the strongest of the Leaf/The Byakugan is the hidden strength of the Leaf ( depending on the audio)" it's a sanity mantra. He needs to justify that the Hyuuga are strong and important to the Leaf, otherwise, Hizashi died for nothing.
Hyuga Hiashi Grief Head-canon
After losing his twin brother, Hiashi became physically ill with grief. After the funeral, he developed a fever so high that he was barely coherent. ( But, not so high as to make it so Hannabi wasn't a possibility). At the time, his wife was still alive and was able to care for him, as well as keep everyone else off of his back. Hiashi's father knew Hiashi was ill with grief ( see my other post :https://www.tumblr.com/kakashi-fan1996/811303365197922304/i-want-to-talk-about-hiashi-and-hizashis-father?source=share on how the father, in the manga, recognizes what he's doing to Hiashi), but he just ignored it ie didn't breathe down his son's neck.
He also couldn't eat, but I'll develop a more fleshed out head-canon for that later.
Every year, when the anniversary of the Hyuga Affair passes, the fever returns. Conveniently, it's in the winter, so it can be passed off as a seasonal illness. He doesn't have any respiratory symptoms ( cough, etc.). Initially Hinata and Hannabi assumed he just caught the same flu every year-
" He always comes down with the seasonal flu this time of year."
"It's just his constitution."
-but eventually Hinata realized how odd it was that he didn't have any other symptoms. Normally someone gets over the flu, and they're still a bit lethargic, congested, a lingering cough or hoarse voice. Nothing. Naturally, Hiashi isolating himself would make sense for a viral illness anyway, but the other things didn't add up.
She never asked him about it. She pieced it together on her own anyway.
Neji noticed as well, but before his reconciliation with Hiashi, he was smug about it. He also noticed the " just fever, no other symptoms" and coldly thought Hiashi was getting what he deserved. "Let him suffer" kind of way.
Once Neji finds out the truth he feels bad, he realizes Hiashi's grief was making him physically ill and he was over here enjoying it.
I want to talk about Hiashi and Hizashi's father, here.
Here is a manage panel from the Hizashi sacrifice scene. The father is saying that while Hiashi wants to be the one to die, Hizashi must die, as his Curse Seal with seal away the secret of the Byakugan upon his death. Hiashi is heavily protesting- he'd sooner die than be without Hizashi. He'd sooner hand Kumo a working Byakugan from his own corpse than give up Hizashi.
In the anime, the Father comes across as mocking HIashi's grief. But here, the air is different. I honestly am not so sure we can call the Twins' father the villain, here. Hiashi killed the ninja kidnapping his 3 year old daughter. Hiashi did what any shinobi father would do and killed the kidnapper. Even Neji , at his most bitter, doesn't blame Hiashi for this. Imagine protecting your three year old from a kidnapping and it creates a diplomatic incident. I would also never smile again.
Now Kumo is being unreasonable- they are threatening war unless they have the head of the Hyuga. The Kumo nin was clearly a fake diplomate. This was clearly a trap- either they succeed in capturing Hinata and use her for experiments or breeding. Or they can deny the kidnapping and ask for a head of the Hyuga.
This isn't Konaha's fault. They can't do anything about the fact that Kumo is threatening war because of this situation. The village was weakened by the 3rd war, had lost so many lives, and was still reeling from the 9-tail attack. They were not in a position to risk a war.
The Hyuga knew this. They were willing to give one of their own to protect the village.
Both twins are clamoring to die. Neither wants to live without the other, both of them want to die for the village in a Heroic Shinobi Fashion.
Only Hizashi is actually allowed to die, as his Curse Seal will seal his eyes upon his death.
Whether it's Hizashi dying and Hiashi living, or Hiashi dying and Hizashi living The One Who Lives is sentenced to a Living Death. If it were the other way around, and Hiashi were dying, Hizashi would act the same way. It's even implied that his wife is already dead. That being said, the Branch family are much more like a Regular Family amongst themselves, and Hizashi, in life, was much less lonely than Hiashi ( Hiashi is sort of like Princess Azula from Avatar: the Last Airbender . He has status but nobody, except for Hizashi, actually sees him as a peer or "sees" him at all), while Hizashi had genuine love from other branch members.
The thing is, the father is not to blame for any of this. The Hyuga have already accepted sacrificing one of their own to prevent war, after all, dying for the village is the pinnacle of being a shinobi. In the anime, the father seems to be mocking Hiashi's grief. Here...he knows what he's doing to Hiashi. But he's saying it necessary to protect the clan. And must be done. It almost seems like he had to do something similar in the past. Int he anime, it looks like he's mocking Hiashi's grief. Here, he's grimly acknowledging it.
Do we see the father as the villain here? I do not.
Anti Hinata people who sympathize with Hiashi for treating Hinata like crap disturb me greatly.
Okay haishi never treated Hinata like crap, he simply abandoned her.. hyuga clan systems were completely different compared to other renowned clans like uchihas, senju etc etc. Remember as the head of hyuga he has responsibilities of each and every clan members not just his own family.. the problem with Hinata was that she simply gave up, she didn’t have that will to work hard to protect her people while hanabi who was 5 years younger to Hinata showcased that determination and will to WORK HARD for the sake of Her people.. Lots of scarifises were made by the sub branch to protect the main branch and thier leader. Hizashi death being one of those sacrifices, this was why haishi was DISAPPOINTED with Hinata Because his own flesh and blood turned out to be an airhead while many hyugas we’re dying left and right to protect this so called head family of the hyuga..
P.S: the same haishi didn’t hesitate to bow down to a little kid (neji) when true hyuga spirit was shown by him during chunin exam.. he didn’t hesitate to call this kid a deserving true heir of hyuga and share stage with him in the 4th great ninja war..
Haishi was not a bad person, he was simply a slave of his past traditions which was broken down thanks to the spirit of the true prodigy Neji hyuga!!
If Hiashi could do all of that, why couldn’t he simply help Hinata believe in herself and you know, act as her father instead of him giving up on her. Why couldn’t he simply help her overcome her insecurities and fears? Or better yet, why couldn’t he apologize to Hinata as well? Did he even give a crap about her being beaten to a bloody pulp by Neji during the chunin exams?
i’m sorry i stopped reading after “Okay haishi never treated Hinata like crap, he simply abandoned her“
yeah cus what 😂 the rest of it is somewhat valid tho
Hiashi was traumatized by the death of his twin brother- he wanted the Head to be strong to prevent another tragedy like that from ever happening again. I Know his abandonment of Hinata looks cold- but he was actually recognizing that she was not suited to be the heiress to the Hyuga - he was cutting her loose from the pressure of being clan head. He had to do it coldly so that she would stop trying to pressure herself to be the Clan Head the Head Branch needed- Hiashi could recognize Hannabi was better suited for that. That's why he needed to be cold about it.
Not to mention, every time a character loses a sibling (Tsunade, Sasuke) the fandom is sympathetic that it makes them cold. Hiashi loses his identical twin to what is basically a prank that weaponized his natural protective instinct towards his child would make him cold and emotionally distant because his heart was ripped out. Hiashi actually does not want Branch members dying for head members. In Japanese lore, Identical twins aren't " two people" they're two halves of the same person. Hiashi is bound to enforce the very system that killed his other half. He can't rock the boat- that could destabilize the Hyuga and ruin the fragile peace Konaha had between the 3rd and 4th wars- only post 4th war was there actual peace that allowed for change.
At the moment of the sacrifice. Both brothers want to die to protect the village, peace , and the clan. They both have the Byakugan. They are both being seen as containers for the Byakugan, not people, in that moment. Just as Hizashi was a labelled as a spare with "secure' eyes that will seal at his death, Hiashi was being labelled as an " unstable" Byakugan container that posed a security risk. Both brothers want to die, but only Hizashi has the agency to actually do it, leaving Hiashi with the worse burden of continuing to live without the person he loves most. The fandom sees this for Kakashi. For Tsunade. Living without those you love is harder than dying, but somehow the fandom misses that for Hiashi.
Sooo you're telling me Hiruzen was too "soft" to kill one of his former ninja pupils who became a horrible criminal, a monster, a traitor who committed crimes against humanity and killed off the people Hiruzen was supposed to protect (innocent citizens and children), but wasn't soft enough to stop a state-supported genocide, which included children who knew nothing about the coup, newborn babies, and normal citizens...ok.
Naruto Headcanons & Theories: on the Hyuuga
1) The Hyuuga compound is actually where Hyuugas are most powerless, because their Byakugan isn’t easily used there. For privacy’s sake, and for certain security reasons, there are Byakugan-blocking seals etched all over the place. Only the Head of the Clan has the power to turn off these seals if needed.
2) Hiashi is actually a good man and a loving father. The problem is when your clan is a shinobi clan with rare dojutsu, and people keep wanting to kidnap your clanmates and children to pluck out their eyes and/or use them for breeding stock, tough (very tough) love seems like the best option to make sure your kids are able to handle the life to come.
3) Hiashi and Hizashi were pranksters as kids; Hiashi was slightly the better because his poker face was flawless.
3.5) The Hyuuga twins, as small children, were babysat by the Sannin. They managed to prank Orochimaru and Jiraiya several times.

“Ohh Hinata didn’t care about Nejis death she only cared about Naruto’s huge hand hahahaha”
GENUINELY Hinata EVERY chance she gets in Boruto when mentioning Neji
Okay, I'm realizing this may come across as inflammatory. But I need to have my curiosities satisfied. @leportraitducadavre I have some questions about your Hyuga takes. You have some of the most anti Hiashi content on Tumblr, so I think I can sort of use you to understand the anti Hiashi stance a bit better. You can ignore this if you like, I'm not here to cause drama.
For Starters. Hiashi is much better received in the Japanese fandom than the American. This is because understanding Asian Collectivist culture is needed to see that Hiashi was a victim of the Hyuga system, not its architect. It wasn't as simple as " radically and bombastically tear down the system" because Hiashi was bound by tradition in a fragile peace time. He didn't even have the liberty to choose his own death as a Shinobi. Being a slave to the Elders, a slave to tradition, not being in a position to rock the boat, and not showing your emotions are all expectations of the Stoic Asian Patriarch, an Archetype Hiashi represents. However, I'm South Asian American. I'm predisposed to understand these concepts better than a Westerner, therefore it's not really fair for me to act high and mighty about it.
You make a few claims I need to question-
" Hiashi didn't love Hizashi"
I'm not here to debate the manga scene, where Hizashi sacrifices himself, as being clear evidence that Hiashi loved Hizashi. I'm realizing the people who make this claim are people who simply don't want to see that interaction as anything other than political. Whatever. My question is another entirely-
How else do you think Neji and Hiashi reconciled? Neji didn't just " forgive" Hiashi and start having a cuddly , normal uncle/nephew relationship with him. Hiashi was too cold and distant for that, they are only seen training together. Neji only wants anything to do with Hiashi because he sees Hiashi's pain. Neji's issue with his father dying, like many in the Naruto world , is that " this person died for peace, they are just a statistic, but they were everything to me." Realizing that Hiashi was in the same boat- Hizashi was his other half ( " two halves of the same person" is how identical twins are typically written in Japanese lore, btw) , and Hiashi had been hurting for Hizashi every day since his death, just like Neji. It's the only penance Neji will accept. Hiashi's thoughts during the chunin exams revolve around Hizashi, before the audience even knows who he was. Can that not...be seen as a sign of deep love?
" Hiashi activated Hizashi's curse seal in front of Neji! Clearly he's a monster!!!!"
Let's break down what was happening, there:
Not to mention, Hizashi doesn't only look like he's in agony, here. He looks SHOCKED. Kind of like this is the first and only time Hiashi activated his little brother's seal.
"Sakki" is an established threat in the Naruto world- Kakashi freezes in front of Orichamaru's, Sasuke almost offs himself from Zabuza's. It's not just a 'bad mood', Hizashi was looking towards a 3 year old Hinata with a desire to kill, with his Byakugan active ( Hiashi's was inactive) . The Naruto world has really emphasized that the above situation is equal to a cop reaching for his gun holster.
Now. Why does Hiashi want to stop Hizashi from hurting Hinata. Obvious aside, if Hizashi lands a hit on the main house heir...it goes badly...for Hizashi and the rest of the Branch members. The Elders execute him, and Neji becomes the son of a traitor.
Hiashi needs to end the situation quickly. "But...Hiashi is a main house member! Clearly he has jutsu that the branch house doesn't have, that would have allowed him to quickly end the situation without using the seal." The War Arc clearly establishes this as false, Hiashi cannot quickly subdue Hizashi. It also goes to show Hizashi was the stronger one, because despite lacking Head House jutsu, which is supposed to be ironic, but anyway.
So. Hiashi activates Hizashi's seal for about a minute and then stops. Neji and Hinata see what happens. What is he going to do? Say " Hizashi , I saw you targeting my 3 year old daughter!" it would sully his reputation. So, instead, he makes himself out to be the monster who activates the seal just because. Neji's memory of the day isn't ' Dad wanted to kill Hinata" it's " my evil uncle tortured my perfect sweet angle father." Hizashi's resentment was understandable, but Hinata and Neji were too young to understand it.
You can say this is headcanon, but in the very next scene Hizashi fondly refers to Hiashi as " ni-san", chooses to die for him, and specifically says " Neji has only seen his ugly side" which I always took to reference this exact situation....
Not to mention during the War Arc, when Hizashi fondly calls him " ni-san" and apologizes for his body attacking him, not exactly the behavior of a vengeful person who is finally in a situation where the curse seal would not be an issue.
Anyway. Please elaborate if you will!
People call Hyuga Hiashi a "cold, power hungry clan head" in part I. We then get the reveal that his beloved twin brother died , in short, for the strength of the Hyuga.
They miss that being the reason why Hiashi so emotionally closed off, distant and obsessed with the Hyuga strength in part I. He's honoring his twin's sacrifice. Don't even get me started on the fact that he did everything right ( woke up in the middle of the night and killed a stranger ninja trying to kidnap his toddler and it still resulted in his loved one dying) and still lost his twin. What father in Konaha could use lethal force to defend his three year old daughter against a kidnapping and be told they created a diplomatic incident and almost sparked a war? No wonder man's was always " >:(."
Anyway. If Hiashi weren't a serious Clan Head Obsessed with the Clan's Strength in part I. Hiashi haters would say " See? He didn't value his brother's life! Look how he doesn't take the clan or training his heirs seriously!"
I swear. People hate on the man because of his...odd demeanor which is realistic. Many adults in real life who are prickly are unnecessarily labelled as evil. But still. The hypocrisy is crazy.
I keep seeing people say Sai didn't like Sasuke or hated him...and I could see how people could come to that conclusion but I don't think he did.
I just don't think Sai understood Sasuke or the remaining og team 7's obsession with him, from Sai's point of view Sasuke is a rouge ninja and someone that doesn't have any good will towards Naruto and Sakura at the beginning. Obviously he wouldn't understand why they wanted to help him so much.
And at the end of that arc he came around and eventually came to an conclusion that he wanted to help them, he obviously understood them enough to do that.
Sai even included Sasuke in his team 7 drawing, he wouldn't do that if he hated Sasuke.
So in conclusion Sai doesn't really have any real relationship with Sasuke, he probably doesn't feel any particular way about him. He trusts Sakura and Naruto's judgement and goes off of that.
If anything, Sai's only beef with Sasuke was the emotional pain he was causing Sakura and Naruto. He seems to dislike Sasuke because he is emotionally harming his new friends. Ie " Who is this Sasuke, and why does Sakura cry over him?" " Who is this Sasuke, and why does Naruto let people beat him up about him?"
