ART-pathfinder aka my beautiful horse who wants to die so so badly
(pose vaguely inspired by Leonnec’s Centaur Kiss)
I think. Perhaps. Given what we saw in Rapport. It might be worth considering that ART continually oversteps in its relationship with Murderbot not because it's trying to be an asshole, but because it is not used to being treated as an actual authority figure. Like. ART has to carry around crew members it doesnt like. It has to play nice and dumb with corporates. Iris thinks of it as her younger sibling. I think there's a significant chance part of why ART is SO demanding and SO selfish when Murderbot first meets it is that's how it makes space for itself. It barges into conversations to remind people that it's there, hi, im in the room with you too. It takes things without asking because asking gets you told no. Its not going to play nice and pretend to be a normal bot pilot around its crew, it has to do that enough already. So its pushy, and it oversteps, because it's used to having to fight to be heard. ART isn't good at talking to bots, because its so used to having to jostle with humans for autonomy that it inadvertently steamrolls people who don't fight back.
It fucks up its first meeting with Murderbot because it isnt expecting Murderbot to perceive it as not only a threat but a superior. A lot of the conflict in their relationship, fact, comes from the fact that Murderbot doesn't see them as equals but ART does. And ART does hold a lot of power over Murderbot, but all the times it fucks up in their relationship aren't from trying to abuse that power but from being unaware (or willfully ignorant) of how that power imbalance affects it. I think ART knows it asks for too much, but it assumes that it needs to to end up with what it actually wants. Murderbot takes everything it says at face value, and ART is clearly getting better over the course of their relationship at not making demands just for the sake of asserting its agency. ART very clearly does not want Murderbot to meekly go along with everything it says. It's not acting the way it does because it expects compliance, but because it refuses to be compliant itself.
ART’s love languages:
full body scan
corporate sabotage
experimental surgery
kidnapping
bomb threat
Muderhelion fic idea where it's a "what if they were both human" AU but instead of something like a coffee shop AU they're both still the same amount of unhinged. MB is an escaped child soldier freelancing as a bodyguard and ART is a university professor academic who moonlights as a spy and getaway driver for an anticapitalist terrorist organization. Each of them have warrants out for their arrest in various countries. They're both still genderless and use it/its pronouns. Do you see my vision
Perihelion and Murderbot are never getting married, Peri is gonna list Murderbot as a vital systems component in its operational files and Murderbot is gonna have its memory archives backed up in Peris servers.
ART yelling at its crew to do their laundry because Murderbot's important person Dr Mensah is going to be onboard and it needs to make a good impression because it wants Mensah to approve of their 'relationship' and be okay with them 'moving in together', and then being so nice to Dr Mensah when it's been an overbearing, domineering, sarcastic nightmare the whole book is something that is so special to me
cutest scene in murderbot history btw
ART is a teenage girl part 2 🔮
Thank you @silverbirching for suggesting this, ur so smart 💖

ART being brought back in NE. To me. If you even care
Ok, it's finally done. Home is a place, home is a person.
This story is my first major piece after several years of art block, and I'm so glad I could finally get back to drawing.
Huge thanks to my dear friend @chancekey for the support.

Iris says in Rapport that ART never speaks impulsively or says anything it doesn't mean to, which... Doesn't super gel with what we've seen of it in the rest of the series. It seems like its more honest than it intends to be a few times in network effect at least. And part of that may be because it's just been through something very traumatic and may be acting in a way that would normally be out of character for it, but i also wonder if Iris may be assuming something is inherently part of its personality which is actually a side effect of her humanity.
Like, when it's talking to humans it has to wait to respond to them. Iris describes it as speaking in basically a normal human conversational pattern, which means it has to be delaying its responses .5 seconds or whatever. It would be really jarring for a human to have a conversation with someone whose reply appears instantly as soon as you hit enter. So regardless of how long it actually takes to formulate a response, it is in the habit of waiting before it speaks. And then it has to wait for the humans to read the message. And then it has to wait for them to respond. Human conversation must be an unbelievably slow process for ART.
And then there's Murderbot. Who isn't quite as fast as ART, but can still keep up with it in conversation at ARTs native, digital speeds. MB mentions being able to clock hundredth-of-a-second hesitations in ART's speech, which means it and ART must be talking INCREDIBLY fast. And I think it's entirely possible that some of Iris's perception of ART as levelheaded and icy in its rage comes from the fact it is essentially communicating with her via snail mail. It has SUCH a long time to think about what it says to her or the rest of the crew. In comparison, its conversations with Murderbot are suddenly happening in real-time. And so it says things that are a little bit crazy sometimes, because despite what Iris believes it isn't actually more levelheaded than a human, its just /faster./
extremely compelled by these two, so here's a sketch page. i don't think i'll go into too much detail about it, but just so that it's clearer what's going on:
top left - "ART kept quiet, though I could tell it was interested in watching me work."
top right - checking smth out together (ART's got it quarantined)
bottom left - media :) :)
bottom right - pov you are arguing with someone who can pull references in real time just to be extra petty
murderbot is peak queer rep because it’s about living as an inherently transgressive form of being, it’s about the complexity of passing, or the complexity of hiding, or the nuance of never fitting binaries and not wanting to even when fitting those binaries is seen as “better”, and it’s about making people uncomfortable just by existing, it’s about measuring forms of freedom and having to decide which you’ll save and which you’ll sacrifice. but most importantly it’s peak queer rep because murderbot is free for like five minutes and it immediately attracts the nearest supposedly-rare transgressive-illegal-superbot (ART) in a hundred light year radius to be its best friend, and what’s that if not your classic Queer On Queer Magnetism
