What's new with me? A new fandom, of course. Planning to spend the next few years here :)

In my 40+ I didn't think I could fall into a fandom with such intensity — but here we are, and it's happiness.

There's so much joy in the ability to fall in love with stories.

And this one is about stigma, neurodivergent power fantasy, and of course enormous non-human non-romantic love and tenderness.

It actually kills me how easy it is to become someone murderbot cares about

Like it gets its first job that it chose and like within hours is invested enough to let someone lay down with it, its upset that it relaxed when there was still someone who needed protection despite the job basically being over anyway

It just watched the preservation team for most of their survey and decided it like them based on things like Mensah driving safely before it was ever ready to accept direct kindness

Its capacity for love is massive when shown even the slightest basic compassion and sometimes even when it can just sympathize with your position despite you hurting it

and it still walks around like "I stepped through the door and I bet everyone flinched because I'm a Terrifying murderbot, which is my name btw, the one I chose for myself"

In platform decay there is this scene in the end, when MB and Three meet at the station. MB mentions that Three is wearing “tan pants and a white hooded shirt”. And apparently that makes it look like a company executive. (It makes MB uncomfortable.) I always find it super interesting when we find out those little details about MB’s life in the company.

Three in this company executive adjacent outfit (with a logo that I just made up, it’s supposed to be the company logo. Of course Three’s shirt wouldn’t include that logo, this is only MB’s neural tissue playing tricks)

Scenes that made me lose my marbles part 356

Things we as a collective should appreciate more from All Systems Red that I've noticed while re-reading it:

- Murderbot likes soft shoes?? Most of the fanart I've seen of it its got sick leather boots and stuff but I think we all have to accept that it would probably enjoy wearing various slippers and socks

- Murderbot states when its describing the Preservation team that Gurathin has a "small quiet smile" and I want to know how far Gurathin looked into its logs and if he saw that what his thoughts were

- Mensah's character evolution from logging 10 complaints to get out of having to have Murderbot on the survey to adopting it? Great we love to see it

- Pin-Lee throwing stuff around in private and Murderbot interpreting that as "being under the company's eye effected her the most" making me think this is vandalism of some sort

- How tiny Murderbot's drones are

- Murderbot blatantly stating that it can and will put certain information in various client's files

- Arada really tries to befriend Murderbot and I love her

- Tone indicators are canon in this universe

- Ratthi casually trying to hint that Murderbot should live on Preservation

- Murderbot committed its first identity theft in this book

- Yes Murderbot likes Sanctuary Moon but it also likes crime dramas, thrillers, and mysteries and its important its got variety (for the Murderbot AMA Murderbot stated it liked 3 real life shows which were The Outsider, The Expanse, and Altered Carbon)

Spoilers for Network Effect (5th book of the Murderbot diaries)

Murderbot is honestly so cathartic to read, as it provides and explores the things and topics so many other sci-fi promised to but embarrassingly failed to deliver. Main character not striving to be human nor being determined to destroy humanity, but in fact being grossed out by the concept, is already such an amusingly unpopular approach it really feels like a breath of fresh air. Murderbot not "falling in love", but being so devoted to its Transport friend to the point of being ready, and insisting on being used as a part of the malware to help it get back something that is really important to it? You're kidding me, this is so cool. And in general, the infiltration in Network Effect, the way it goes through becoming basically non-physical entity. FINALLY, oh my god, YES, finally I see someone utilising non-human characters in the narrative in a way that actually takes into consideration their nature and uses the insane potential of it. Already the fact that processing multiple inputs at the same time is consistent part of the narrative that is used a lot and isn't forgotten about. I'm just so glad that I finally found media that is about entities that are partly or entirely digital that ISN'T some kind of fear mongering story about humanity with the insistence on making it into some kind of moral lecture, like it's so fucking difficult to find an example of sci-fi around this topic that wouldn't fucking try to do that. Murderbot is ironically being better at being a caricature too though, by actually focusing on a story and using critique of the capitalism to be a part of a world-building rather than focusing it into a one single place, single Corporation of Evil™ or something like that. No, it's everywhere and it's casual. So casual, in fact, that you can recognise it as something that really much exists today, and not just in an abstract future.

I love this book series. It's finally a sci-fi written by a person who genuenly loves the topic of non-human characters and grants them freedom to be what they actually are, and isn't just using them as some strawman argument in some completely unoriginal tropes and ways that were done too many times with little to no diversity.
