There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.

Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.

And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.

AND NOT TO GO TOO FAST WITH TOO MUCH BUT IF YOU LIKE THIS FIC YOU SHOULD TOTALLY CHECK OUT ‘the girls we tried to be’ (idk if I already mentioned this to you?) which is just a really cool take on elmax rediscovering both their friendship outside of the boys and el figuring herself out (the wonder twins dynamic is realistically complicated and they really do come off as flawed teenagers) plus max’s mental health being a factor along with initially grieving billy and not completely having forgiven el (anyway also 10/10 it’s ongoing but almost complete and does a brilliant job of fleshing them out beyond the fantasy of girl friendship that’s there in season three that is still centered around the boys and then they DO eventually get together lol)

there is like. one specific part of that song that drives me insane because of how she sings it though and it's the kind of rushed frantic feeling of the 'I try to ignore it but it's everything I see up to the 'it's in my phone, it's in my head, it's in the boys I bring to bed, all around, it's all the time, I don't know why l even try' like that whole section is the kind of frustrated panic of trying to run away from something you can't physically outrun so you try to do it mentally but there's so much of YOU in there too. like you are stuck with you and you just can't escape that except the problem is the root of your insecurities is also you. just. the mental image of pulling your hair in helplessness.

I think obsessed was funnnn!! I loved it also something so homoerotic about that song like in a very 2000s ‘is it gay to be extremely fixated on this woman to the point of obsession where the line between love hate jealousy and admiration is just blending in together’ I can’t even describe it. it’s also a just a bop.

making the bed, lacy and the grudge were emotionally destructive I fear except lacy also changed lives so. like making the bed was just way too painfully relatable I don’t even know what to quote just the whole thing and how it sounds both resigned and trapped. bitter and self-aware of the self-destruction that lead to the feeling/situation. lacy was gorgeous. it felt both sweet and a little poisonous in a ‘do I want to kill you or kiss you or be you or just watch you forever’ way like. devastating stuff right there. and the grudge felt very much a late night when the hurt is fresh and simultaneously notes app vent.

ANYWAY I LISTENED TO OR3 AND WHILE THE CURE IS PROBABLY ONE OF MY FAVORITES OFF THE ALBUM

I REALLY LOVED LESS it was kind of devastating actually like I think it captured something that draws me so much towards her music and it’s the way she channels emotion in her songs? like it feels very raw and genuine in a diary entry way but without being too cluttered with metaphors to sound refined or having a messy /neg and unorganized unedited feel—just simple but cutting emotional outpouring and it’s so satisfying to see. same with the cure like it’s just so cool how she’s integrated mental health into the album with its many moods and emotional highs and lows it feels pretty mature actually and it’s so important too actually the whole message of loving someone might make you happy but ultimately you can’t rely on that happiness to drown out all of the unpleasant feelings and the baggage you’re carrying forever because that’s just unsustainable and at some point it isn’t going to be enough for anyone involved.

meanwhile songs like my way and maggots for brain are kind of fun in a way? they feel very teen in like almost this aesthetic way that isn’t romanticized exactly but like a good messy chaos without being all over the place. like they know what they want to be. I think my favorite of this variety was u + me = 🩷 like it just feels so carefree, hanging out, daydreaming and just very fun and tipsy off loving someone.

and honeybee is just very sweet. like it just feels tender and a little lovesick in a pretty way. there’s something very personal about it in a way compared to the others. it feels like something kind of whispered or like talked/thought about late at night or in a quiet moment. anyway just. atdgchvjb. anyway dropping this here because I love sending asks.

AHHH IDK I’M ALWAYS A LITTLE RELUCTANT ABOUT BOOKS BEING TURNED INTO SHOWS BECAUSE SOMETIMES ITS SO HARD TO CAPTURE WHAT EXACTLY ABOUT THE BOOKS MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE (huge example for me is probably percy jackson! while the casting is great and so is the worldbuilding the show feels lacking in the humor percy’s internal monologue provided and the absence of that voice made something feel fundamentally amiss about the show!)

BUT YES I HAVE WATCHED WEDNESDAY (not season two yet unfortunately but season one was amazing!!)

OOOH HONESTLY I RECENTLY BOUGHT TASHA SURI’S LATEST FANTASY BOOK (it’s the isle of the silver seas? also wlw but completely different universe more updates after I’ve finished reading!! anyway another wlw fantasy I have is unbroken by C.L clark which I also haven’t finished yet oops and I likely won’t get to either of those until I’m done with my ongoing reread of oleander sword)

YOU MENTIONED GIDEON THE NINTH AND THE TRAITOR BARU CORMORANT THOUGH WHICH?? I’ve heard so much about them both but avoided them because I was scared of the things I’ve heard about the endings 😭 (what I mean to say is are they worth hype?? cause if they are I will be reading and I trust your taste in books hehe)

I SO GET WHAT YOU MEAN but also idk I think she’s kind of tragic? at least in tsoa, a goddess meant to be more powerful than mere mortal reduced to an object and betrayed by her own kin who quite literally instructed him on how to force himself onto her :(((( and with the prophecy that achilles would be far greater than his father it was like a laugh in his face and a chance for her, despite the odds she had been dealt—and hence she took charge of creating him, forging him into the kind of hero who would be the greatest and rise to glory among gods. which might be a slight reach but it struck me that her grief towards the end is not being able to make him a god because she genuinely wanted the son who she viewed as her own, more god than her husband’s child but also her own way to vicariously live what she should’ve had as a goddess had she not been betrayed and tainted by the ‘lesser’ mortal, a kind of fate she should’ve been safe from as a god. and that power and glory in her eyes were the most important to her, as a goddess. what had she known of human impulse and desire when in context of the book all it brought her was shame and something she had not asked for? she only strived to give her son what in her eyes and her immortal life—was the greatest gift of all. of course when she saw her son being steered aside by mortal feeling her first instinct was to drive them apart (because her son was to be a god and that boy? he was nothing). but towards the end, when she mourns what she could not give him, she also earns a chance to mourn the son who had turned from her, in grief once his lover died—the golden haired harp player, the other softer parts of the weapon she had sought to build. and the parts she disapproved of were the very parts that had prevented him from becoming pyrrhus, patroclus, anchoring him to his humanity. and through his lover’s memories she got to hold that part of achilles and in some way, understand, that what made him the boy he was wasn’t simply god influence. which is why her final act of love and first act of understanding is to let patroclus join him. ooof. like beneath the love story is a deeper story between a goddess mother and her son, doomed by the narrative (anyway excuse the oversimplification I just wanted to ramble a bit at the risk of not addressing every point in detail which is not to say thetis wasn’t flawed or not prejudiced against mortals, but the context here specifically makes it feel like so much more?)

YES PLEASE (any book recs are welcome on my side too!! and buddy reads sound so FUNN) ITS AN AMAZING BOOK. LIKE IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL RELATABLE THE BANTER BETWEEN THE MAIN CHARACTERS IS WONDERFUL AND THEIR PARENTS ARE LITERALLY SO COOL. ALSO JUST. STUNNING REFLECTIVE WRITING. MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE TO REC.

YK WHAT I THINK I DIDNT EVEN TOTALLY HATE S3? I just feel like it took away what made villanelle so unique as a character in television by setting up a redemption arc (I actually didn’t hate it when I was watching though! the acting is highly emotional and beautifully done but objectively it just…didn’t fit the tone of what made the show so unique) like for example one of my favourite scenes of season two was her hospital interaction with one of the patients where she ends up killing him in the end? like, it feels so sudden and jarring and it’s exactly the kind of tension killing eve loves to play with? that line between the familiarity we as viewers feel with villanelle and the quick brutal whiplash moments of extremely dubious morality just when you get comfortable?

I mean, I guess what I missed about season three was that it didn’t really keep you on your toes, nor did it play with villanelle’s charm in the same unreliable way even though she was in character. Ugh and season four I have even more to say specifically about how tacky the ‘dark eve’ part felt compared to previous seasons where the conflict between her inner darkness that she actively sought in villanelle while also self-denying her own tendencies vs clinging to normality by her fingernails felt more authentic + villanelle’s characterization was butchered and while I found some beats of helen and eve interesting it made me SO MAD that eve was apparently mad at villanelle for no reason when the season three bridge conversation implied ACCEPTANCE??? like what was all the buildup for smhhh but what can one expect from the writer who killed off the heart of the show ig 🙄 (I could go into even more detail but would rather hear your thoughts too hehe)

you’re also extremely correct about the lack of ronance I mean as glad as I am for ‘how are the babes at emerson’ I wish they could’ve actually focused way less on the love triangle + it still drives me crazy that robin and vickie’s entire purpose was to build up will’s coming of age arc only for them to sideline him again despite introducing him into a more significant part of the supernatural plot and not even giving him an authentic coming out scene + wdym the girls had no role outside of that whatsoever and vickie wasn’t even in the epilogue???? anyway all this just made me mad because ronance was right there with so much history and they broke up jancy anyway and planned to half-ass the main wlw ship so WHY NOT do ronance???? what were they smoking in that writers room fr

YESS, IVE LITERALLY TALKED TO TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE ABOUT THAT HOSPITAL SCENE BC I THINK THEY REALLY NAILED HER CHARACTERIZATION AND HER DYNAMIC WITH THE AUDIENCE RIGHT THERE. i love how the show plays into the audience's desire to find those little scraps of humanity/compassion within villanelle (not to say that she doesnt have any), and gives us this whole build-up and then snatches it right back, like you said. like eve got called crazy for going along with/somewhat trusting villanelle, but uk what I FELL FOR IT TOO AND GOT JUST AS MUCH WHIPLASH EACH TIME. AND WHAT ABOUT IT

s4 just pisses me off, like im ready to give the plot some grace and accept that it may get a little 'repetitive' but the fact that they completely ignored all the developments in eve and villanelle's relationship (the culmination of which was, as u mentioned, the bridge scene!!), and then PROCEEDED TO HAVE THAT DISASTROUS FINALE. LIKE THAT WAS SUCH AN ANTI-CLIMACTIC ENDING AFTER EVERYTHING, LIKE THE WAY VILLANELLE KILLS THE 12, ALL OF IT. NAH. i wouldve obv loved a happy ending, but IM ALSO READY TO ACCEPT A TRAGIC ENDING IF IT MAKES ANY SORT OF SENSE. AND IT DIDN'T. UGH

regarding ronance - LITERALLY. LIKE THEY ALR PRETTY MUCH DISCARDED VICKIE WITHOUT ANY PROPER CLOSURE, AND THE WHOLE NANCY STEVE JONATHAN SITUATION WAS RESOLVED, IT WAS THE PERFECT OPENING FOR RONANCE, EVEN LIKE AN OPEN-ENDED IMPLIED KINDA THING. WE NEED TO GET IN THE WRITER'S ROOM FR. i havent been reading ronance for a while now, but later on if ur open to it, i can send a fic rec in ur asks or smth (also totally chill if ur not).
