2) Favorite canon thing about this character? —> that’s a tough one, because there’s just so many options, both broad and specific. Like I could say very generally, just the way he interacts with other characters, or more specifically the (intentional or not) portrayal of mental illness symptoms. Just…literally just his personality, even? I find him both relatable and incredibly endearing, and very very interesting. I guess if I had to pick just One Thing, it’d be that he’s VERY imperfect? The show lets him make mistakes and deal with their consequences. Sometimes more than once. He makes catastrophic errors that he has to deal with for practically the rest of the show, and I kinda love it. It makes him feel more grounded and it’s satisfying when he’s able to make things right

3) Least favorite canon thing about this character? —> I have to take off my rose tinted glasses for this one, I’ll admit (they’re not even tinted, I think they’re opaque lol). I think this is mostly the fault of the writers, but it feels like—especially for a main character—he’s getting dragged around through the story by handcuffs or something. He sometimes has incredibly confused logic (which would make sense if he were a real person, but from a storytelling perspective it’s kinda frustrating). What I mean by this, is sometimes Sam feels like even be doesn’t know what he wants. This could be explored in an interesting way since in most fiction, the main character knows exactly what they want, even if that goal shifts throughout the narrative. Not Supernatural, though. It’s like Sam is just reluctantly shoved into situations sometimes and it’s a little baffling? Or when Dean goes to purgatory and he settles down even though that goes against prior characterization in a way that feels…really weird to me?? As if even he didn’t want to do what he was doing. It’s hard to explain, sorry

7) What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like? —> writing. I actually don’t read a whole lot of Supernatural fanfic (unfortunately), but from essays to headcanons to the fics I’ve read, Sam fans are just really good at writing him, I’ve found. The people that get him REALLY get him, I guess. At least when it comes to people who have him as their favorite out of the brothers, though I’ve found the Deangirls (gender neutral) who DON’T hate him do a good job, as well

8) What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise? —> oh boy. I don’t really have a problem when it comes to the more sectioned off part of the fandom that it dedicated Sam Fans (which, admittedly, I’m more in tune with than the wider fandom, for reasons that are obvious if you’re a huge Sam Fan lol) save for maybe sometimes I see like a lot of really horny posts on my dash at once and FOR ME as someone who is sex repulsed, can be overwhelming. But that’s ONLY a personal issue, and not a fandom thing. I’m glad people are having fun, y’know? But then there’s the bigger fandom, which seems to just LOVE being ableist to Sam lol. I guess that’s partially because the show and also Dean is really ableist towards Sam, but still. And all the “Dean is so traumatized poor baby Sam is so evil and cruel for [insert thing Dean also does] and [Insert thing he has no idea was bad at the time] and [insert thing he has no control over]. I hate when he gets in the way of uwu Destiel he’s so horrible for [insert Sam literally getting sexually assaulted]” drives me absolutely nuts. Short answer? All the weird finger pointing and scapegoating Sam when like…yeah he did bad things. So did everyone else. AND the literally blaming him for his own SA victimhood specifically

I also love how imperfect Sam is. As for the writing it can be super frustrating. Supernaturals writing in general can feel like that since there are so many different writers(I remember there’s one episode in like Season 11 or something where Dean goes back to his season 1 bits and it’s just weird because we’ve moved past those??). The writers flip back and forth on rather Sam wants a normal life or not, which I think is realistic if he were a real person but it sometimes feels like idk they’re just bringing back that early season thing for no reason? There are some episodes about how hunting is actually something Sam really enjoys, like when he’s turned normal and can’t stand it, but then they keep going back to that baseline desire idk. It feels like sometimes they fail to explore the complexity of his conflict between being normal and being a hunter.

I feel like a lot of Sam fans understand him really well!! Like they just get his personality and mannerisms. My favorite part of the fandom is interacting with Sam and Dean girls(gender neutral) who love both brothers because I feel like that’s where you get the best characterization)

I fully agree about the horny posts. Power to them and I’m glad they’re engaging with Sam in the way they want but I wish I could just like…block every horny Sam post from popping up on my dash. It makes me kinda uncomfortable seeing people talk about my favorite character like that. But like you said that’s very much a “I’m sex repulsed” problem and doesn’t have anything to do with what I think people should or shouldn’t be posting. The ableism especially makes me sad. We have a character that’s such an interesting representation of mental illnesses like addiction and PTSD and everyone’s blaming him for drinking demon blood and saying they hate his flinching and stuttering post cage🙁 People LOVE to blame Sam for his SA and things that Dean literally did himself. Which sucks because personally a lot of my interest in Dean comes from his flaws. I think he’s wrong in most of the conflicts between the brothers but I like looking at his perspective even when it’s hurting Sam. But that’s a whole other mess with the fandom either ignoring his flaws or saying that’s all his character is. I love interacting with Dean fans and Destiel fans but only the ones who still get Sam as a character y'know? And ones who don’t jump to blaming him in every conflict and saying that he gets in the way of the ship or Deans character.

Yeah, hazard of having so many writers, but it always felt super weird to bring up things that had already been established as over and done with. In real life, there’s fluctuation, but in fiction it’s just weird and confusing, y’know? There’s so much potential if they used it intentionally—like you said, especially with things like Sam’s conflicting desires for a “normal” life and his love of hunting—for some really cool concepts to be explored, but it just ends up falling flat, unfortunately

And yes!! While I clearly have a favorite, I love Dean as well, and it’ll honestly always confuse me how you can enjoy the show while downright hating one of the central characters? I mean enjoy it how you want, of course, but you are right—you get the best characterization from that happy medium, because it’s a little hard to write characters you don’t like super well lol. For example, back when I was working on an MHA fic with my friend in 2020, I always had her write for Todoroki because I just didn’t like him 😭

And yeah, I’m glad the people hornyposting about Sam are having fun, and seeing one or two spread out doesn’t affect me much, but it is unfortunate when it’s like five or six in a row. But thats why we say “just scroll away” lol. I’m with you though, I always get extra uncomfortable when people speak sexually about a character I really love (though again, thats just a me issue, and no one is in the wrong for doing so). I try and filter tags and stuff so that doesn’t happen but alas. Anyway, the ableism really is a problem. :( I find the stutter and flinch both extremely cute and really sad in that “I relate and I wanna give him a hug” way lol. It’s sad to see people hate on him for things that…he can’t control? The demon blood thing especially because he was manipulated into an addiction AND into thinking he was doing the right thing (and we all know Sam would throw him into a furnace if he thought it would save Dean lol), and said addiction was absolutely NOT handled well by his loved ones. He doesn’t need hate from the fandom, too qwq

And yeah, Dean (and Sam, too) has a TON of flaws. That’s what makes him interesting!! I definitely tend to take Sam’s side, but I love to try and see things from Dean’s perspective, because he also tends to make valid points lol. It’s just sad when people water him and Cas BOTH down to whatever’s going on with Destiel AND also hate on Sam for “getting in the way”

Honestly? Probably the first one. It’s just done so well for what it is. Though, it’s probably tied with 3 or 5 for me. Those three are kinda all tied for first place tbh
