10 phrases I hate from the English language
"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree" So narrow-minded and restrictive. As someone who had never identified with my family and is the absolute black sheep (and effing proud of my gorgeous dark wool🖤), I hate how this quote suggests that one can never be better than the environment they grew up in. Like fate is a predetermined outcome that one can never escape and is doomed to follow, which is such a demotivating, short-sighted, and downright untrue, unhealthy mindset.
"Blood is thicker than water" Similar to the previous quote, this toxic phrase implies that one's blood relatives are the unequivocally most important, valuable people in one's life. Tell that to people from dysfunctional, broken, and/or abusive households. Let me tell you: a good, trustworthy, strong friendship is worth more than any relationship with someone who simply shares a greater percentage of DNA with you.
"She fell pregnant/We're pregnant" For "fell" pregnant, I'm caught off guard by the use of that word, like someone "fell" ill as if pregnancy were some horrible, contagious disease. Why not just use "became" pregnant? It's a far more "becoming" adjective, plus it has "came" in it, which is how the pregnancy began ;) Saying "we are pregnant" is just wrong and, if you think about it, degrading. This implies that both individuals in the relationship are carrying a child inside their womb, which isn't the case and steals the hard-earned credit away from the woman; far from the first (or last) time such has occurred😒
"You can't have your cake, and eat it, too" This just doesn't make sense for the meaning it is trying to convey. What's the point of having a cake, if not specifically to eat it?
"You've made your bed, now sleep in it" Similar to the previous point, this one doesn't make sense for its intended message. It would make much more sense if it were worded "You've slept in your bed, now make it."
"I could care less" I COULDN'T care less.
"Nothing/no one is perfect" While technically true, I hate how this phrase has been used to justify the most horrible, vile actions, beliefs, and people. It's been used to deflect any criticism from anyone or anything, which implies that it is a bad thing for the world to improve in any way, shape, or form, as a lazy, clichéd excuse. I've heard it used to excuse anything from racist, genocidal historical figures to assholes who bully and harass others. Fuck this phrase.
"Practice makes perfect" Practice makes PROGRESS, not perfection, which is impossible and can quickly become unhealthy to strive for such an unattainable measure. My 7th grade music teacher had a sign in her classroom which read "Practice makes progress, not perfect," and I still remember and commend her for that nearly one decade later.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" Fuck this phrase from behind. It is absolute, burning rubbish, and downright insulting to the many who have ended their lives or harmed themselves from bullying. Hell, I am still recovering from the pain and trauma of bullying and harassment from many years ago. Words cut so deep and viscerally, leaving worse scars than any tree branch.
"Time heals all wounds" No tf it doesn't. In fact oftentimes pain and grief worsen with time and are left horribly infected, especially when longing for someone or something you can never see again. Sincerely, a person who has suffered depression, trauma, and other mental health disorders :)
