[Image description: Tweet by 🐰Witchie 🧶💜 (@ witchiebunny) reading: When you realise that the Puritans were not, in fact, an innocent oppressed minority but religious extremists, a lot more about the United States begins to make sense.
Reply by [handle not visible] reads: Wait, are you guys taught the Puritans were good???
Reply by Witchie reads: Yep. "The Puritans were fleeing religious intolerance in England and came to America for the freedom to worship as they pleased" is a standard line.
Reply by [handle not visible] reads: That is mental. I think most of them were exiled to America when the king came back after the [English] civil war. For treason. For literally killing the last king, taking over the country, murdering Catholics and banning Christmas 😳
Reply by Witchie reads: Where they got to write their own narrative which founded a freaking country.
Reply by [handle not visible] reads: Tbh, I did think it was a good idea of the Puritans to overthrow the monarchy... but maybe not as much of a good idea to just replace it with their own, honorary monarchy.
Reply by Thomas Creamer (@ TM Creamer) reads: Not to mention how Cromwell somehow managed to set a new standard for how big a bastard English rulers can be towards Ireland.
Reply by Nicole reads: ... wait are people going around saying they were an oppressed minority? Is that a common narrative? This is genuine, I have never heard of them represented as anything other than religious extremists.
Reply by Sean Gray (@ graysquirrel7) reads: In elementary school in the 80s there was a lot of "the pilgrims came to America to escape religious persecution" in class and not a lot of "the pilgrims were a puritanical sect that was told they weren't allowed to harass people in England."
Reply by Kayla 💛 reads: Just graduated high school this year and I can confirm that as of like. Idk 8 years ago they still do this 👍 /.End ID]
Can attest as an American who went to K-6 elementary school (ages 5-11) in 1989-1995, we were absolutely taught that The Pilgrims (never called the puritans until at least middle school, not refereed to as separatists until high school) were a poor beleaguered group of oppressed relgios people who fled their country for religious freedom, landed in the Netherlands for a bit but found that 'they couldn't raise their children the way they wanted to' there, and headed to The Land Of Free Opportunity With Liberty And Justice For All to found a new nation. ::eagle scream, America the Beautiful sung by a church choir::
I got to learn that as an actual Wampanoag child.
Just gonna leave these here:
by Judy Dow (Abenaki) and Beverly Slapin Revised 06/12/06 What is it about the story of "The First Thanksgiving" that makes it essential to
Interview with Nanepashemet, a Wampanoag historian, at Plimoth Plantation, about the history of the Wampanoag and the area of Dawnland (New
They were religious separatists who thought they were the Only Real True Christians. They were Plymouth Colony, not to be confused with the slightly-more-moderate Massachusetts Bay Colony. (Or the wild-eyed radicals in Rhode Island and Plymouth Plantation, who were Baptists and (horror!) Quakers. And I can snark because they were my ancestors.)
Rhode Island: We've been like this The Whole Time.
The Pilgrims were actually fleeing neither persecution nor the consequences of their actions. They had already fled both when they escaped to the Protestant-friendly Netherlands. They were fleeing the Thirty Years' War, which they believed to be beginning of the biblical apocalypse. In North America they wished to establish a New Jerusalem, and wait for Jesus to inevitably return and take them to Heaven. Needless to say, Jesus didn't come back and, well. The rest is history isn't it.
.........ah.
I see.

video game secret: there's clever wordplay hidden in the title of the game "nintendogs". the word "dogs" is cleverly added on to the name "nintendo" to form the word "nintendogs". this is actually a reference to the concept of "puppies"
every lyric annotation on Genius reads like this
honestly i think there are fictional depictions of good cops (or even just cops as interesting characters) that, despite being copaganda to some degree, i can cut people some slack for liking for myriad of other reasons, especially if i know they’re keeping ACAB in mind. i just think it’s particularly funny to get Zootopia people whipped up for some reason. born and bred hater. cradle to grave i will be hating. know this
no other fictional character defense hits like this. shit makes me feel like Colin Robinson
