A film told about a story of mother and son who tried to survive from the room were used as a place of incarceration. They had been held captive for many years. The mother who called “Ma” with the name in the character as Joy Newsome has spent 7 years live in that room, and the son who called “Jack” was 5 years old. He has been trapped in that room since he was born. Room is an approximate ten by ten foot cubed structure, there is one bed, one wardrobe, one table set, kitchen, and bath room contained in one room. There is only one door by a number coded keypad, the code which only “Old Nick” knows. Old Nick is a named of the abductor. Ma has kidnapped by Old Nick, since she was 17 years old, since then she never come out of that room and met with her family. They are dependent on Old Nick for their basic necessities, such as food, water, clothes, and utilities. The only exposure they have to natural light is a skylight at the top of room, out of which they can only see sky.
Jack is 5 years old son. He began to try to understand what the world is. Ma and Old Nick, including him are the only things that he thought was real. There is a television in that room, everything he saw from tv is not real for him. He thought what happened in tv is a magic, until their room sneaked by mice. Jack captivated by the mice. He tried to get closer, but his mother stopped him and tried to get rid of the mice. He wondered how the mice come into their room. There might be a hole back there that connected the room to the backyard said Ma. Jack could not understand what his mother says. He accused his mother was lying. Ma keep tried to tell Jack about the world. There is a tree, a dog, many things he never saw and many peoples out of their room. Jack started to think what he just heard from his mother was right. As a mother, Joy wants her son to feel happy and safe. Ma’s resilience reaches a breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape.
First attempt to escape, Ma tried to make her son got a fever by rubbing his body with towel that has been dipped in boiling water. Old Nick always comes in every night. She hopes that Old Nick will bring him to the hospital at that time. That night has come, when Old Nick comes into the room, he saw Jack lay down on the bed. Ma’s told that Jack got fever because the heater in their room running down all night long before. She asks him to bring him to the hospital, but Old Nick rejected it. He will buy a medicine and gave it to them tomorrow, said him. Ma was upset because of the attempt at that night was failed. The next day she tried the second attempt. She teaches jack how to make his body feel stiff like a dead man. If Old Nick comes and see that Jack was dead, he will not have choice to bring him out of the room. Ma gives a direction to Jack, when the car reached slow speed, it signs for jack to jump off of the truck. Jack said he was afraid, but Ma tried to courage him. If he did jump off of the truck, find someone and ask him a help, added Ma. Old Nick comes before the night. He saw Jack had rolled in a rug and Ma crying over him said that he died because the fever got worst. Old Nick seems panic, he could not let Jack’s dead body stay in the room. Immediately, he brought Jack’s body to his truck and brought him to the place he should be. Ma has stay in that room, she could not go with them, ordered by Old Nick. The car starts running. Jack who is stay in the rug try to concentrate and followed the direction that given by his mother. In the middle on the way, he tried to rolling off the rug, so he could jump off of the truck when he reached at the point. The car got slower, Jack tried to jump off of the truck, and run as fast as he can, but his leg is not strong enough. Old Nick tried to catch him back, but there is a man with his dog walk in that sidewalk. The man feel confused, he feels something wrong about Jack and Old Nick. Jack tried to communicate with him and ask him for a help. Old Nick got more panicky, he did not want to be arrested. He let off Jack and driving away from that road. The man called police to help him. When police arrived, they helped Jack and bring him by their car. In the car, they investigated of the incident. They asked Jack how he could be outside, how he could be at that road, where is his mom, where he is come from. Jack is who spent his whole life in the room, still feel confused and insecure when he was outside, but he tried to answer the question properly. According to his answered, police suspect there is a crime that experienced by Jack. They tried to looking for a room which mentioned by Jack, and followed the direction which given by his mother. They arrived at the house, at the backyard of the house there is a shed where place as their room. Finally, Ma was rescued by the police. Ma and Jack get back together and feel happy to be survived from that room. Police brought them to hospital, they need a medical attention, especially for Jack because he has to adapted with the condition which never been met.
After few days in the hospital, Jack and Ma move in to Joy’s Mother home, Nancy. Nancy has been reported to the police that Joy was missing, but police could not find her until Jack has survived and helped Joy to come back to her family. Nancy lives with her boyfriend, she got divorced with Joy’s father while Joy disappeared. Joy could understand if her parents got divorced, but she could not feel happy like before. One day she tried to kill herself. Jack finds her lay down on the ground of the bathroom. Right away, Joy was rushed to the hospital, fortunately she rescued, but she had to be hospitalized for few days. Jack who always dependent on his mother, could not come to the hospital, he has to stay at the house with his grandparents. Since the first time he survived from the room, he always sticking on his mother, even Nancy could not get along with him. Nancy has been asked Jack if he would like to cut off his hair, because his hair is too long for him, but Jack rejected and said that his hair empowered him. At the day, Jack was played by himself in his room, he misses his mother, he encourage himself to talk to Nancy and asked her to cut off his hair. Nancy got surprised, she wondered why he wants to cut off his hair, Jack answered that he would like to send his hair to his mother, so his mother could get empower from him. After that, he collected his hair and asked Nancy to bring it to his mother. He feels happy and hopes his mother will get recovery soon. Shortly after Joy takes Jack’s hair, she came back to home. Joy feels happy for looking her son could get along with each other while she is in the hospital. Joy and Jack back to live together, Joy promised that she never tried to kill herself anymore.
After passing through many obstacles, Jack and Ma could live happily. They started to live like a normal people, smile even more than before. Jack realized that world is not as big as the room before. There is no room in this world, except when the door was closed. World is bigger than he has ever imagined
