Been spoiling my babies lately
Hey I know I’ve all but abandoned this blog but don’t buy pet store goldfish. Just don’t. I know my fish are big and beautiful and I love them all to death but now, just a few years in, I’m having to watch them all struggle purely due to their breeding.
Compie, the biggest and oldest(at 3 years old, really still quite young), and now has two huge tumors. One is on his side and has been for a while, but he has a much faster growing one on his face.
Igor, who looks like he has the body parts from 5 different fish sewn together, is now struggling on and off with his swim bladder because of his extremely strange and round shape.
Disney, poor Disney, has been blind for close to a year now from wen overgrowth and it is now weighing him down and making swimming very difficult.
Poor Pua didn’t make it a year before I euthanized her due to tumors and dropsy. Not to mention her being eyeless from bullying since she was so slow and defenseless. I still think about that poor fish regularly. She deserved better.
I tried my best to pick out what I thought were strong and healthy fish, raised them with the best intentions, and I knew that buying them from a pet store probably meant I wouldn’t have them for 15 years like some lucky people get with their fish, but these guys are all barely 2-3 years old and I feel like I’m watching them fall apart before my eyes.
I know a lot of people are gonna read this and not care, so if you only take one thing from it let it be this: just get some small and boring fantails. They’re the only ones I’ve never had to worry about.
Went through old pictures today and found this ancient photo of Compie the day I brought him home! Compared to today, that’s a glow up if I ever saw one
I feel like they appreciate my doodles on the glass while I fill the tank

Compie is still my little baby even though he’s the size of a small blimp

Sweet Treason is growing 🤗
Don’t think I’ve introduced this guy but since I’ve had him a week and finally picked a name I guess it’s time
This little fella is Treason, hilariously named by my 5 y/o niece. I’m a little irritated because there were two very similar looking fish and I specified “the one without any black” but the employee must’ve misheard me and I didn’t notice until we got home he gave me the wrong one. Oh well though, I love this guy all the same and can’t wait to watch him grow
Goldfish enrichment!
I still love these gifs so much. Especially the first one, you can totally see how he’s using each of his fins differently to propel himself forward then brake in order to boop the ball.
I love having the snail tank right by my computer cause instead of engaging with internet arguments, I can just watch these guys do their thing. They know what's up. Sliming about. waving a tentacle. launching off leaves to drift down to the bottom and zoom off. snacking on algae. hitching a ride on each other's shells. that's the life.

Because reasons.
Goldfish are not lawful neutral they will Knock Over everything in sight and Stuff Everything In Their Mouths including fingers and snails and expensive plants and literal rocks. Chaotic neutral at best.
Seriously especially ryukins enjoy just uprooting plants for the sake of doing it
