#i mean yes but it also kinda depends what you mean #in terms of total displacement moving a mile uphill and moving a mile on flat ground are the same distance (5280 ft)#but your displacement in the horizontal and vertical direction is not the same #moving uphill a mile of total displacement gets you less than a mile of horizontal displacement #this matters if youre using any kind of non topographical map like google maps because those only measure horizontal displacement #so if google maps tells you to go 10 miles thats genuinely a longer distance uphill than on flat ground #and of course moving a mile uphill takes more energy than moving a mile on flat ground because youre gaining gravitational potential energy #so in some important ways (using a map and energy expended) 1 mile uphill is not 1 mile on flat ground #and those 2 can compound if youre for instance hiking uphill with a map

#ara jokes reblog #having recently read the version accredited to homer i was surprised how accurate it was!#i was expecting a complete bastardization but some scenes were almost beat for beat #i was disappointed by the lack of Nobody but I don't think thats the most important exclusion #i think the most important exclusion is that in a story about defining your culture through the other #they cut all of the benevolent others #(aolus)#(the lotus eaters)#(the 2nd circe encounter where shes less antagonistic)#(and the phaeacians)#also. lets be real. odysseus didnt have much agency in the original.#imo they actually gave him more agency in some parts and made him a better person than the version accredited to homer #he was not that nice to Circe #and i wish they kept more of penelopes guile or maybe expanded on it from the original #and kept more of Helen's terrifying levels of insight #and showed that Circe wasn't just being paranoid but had legitimate grievances #and kept Calypso's speech about how unfair it is that male gods can ruin the lives of mortal girls while she cant ruin the life of a man #.... and kept the powerful queen of the phaeacians Arete #but i don't think it COMPLETELY mishandled the women. just. slightly mishandled every single one of them #the plucking his bow annoyed me though #if there is 1 greek hero that doesnt care about honor and winning a fight head-on #its odysseus #idk there's a theory that the odyssey was written in part or in whole by a woman #and maybe the man who struggles to write women is simply not the correct director for the task #but he gave it a decent shot and i think it turned out pretty good with lots of room for improvement
